Hinges are starting but firm. Internally generally firmly bound. Pages are lightly age-toned with scattered spots. Ink notes to the margins. Tide mark to the first and last few pages. Gilt lettering on front and spine. Top of text block in gilt. All gilt is bright slight fraying of margine of boards book square binding tight and text very clean. Very slight age toning to endpapers but not to text.</p><p>Written originally in 1901 the careful observations on bees made by Maeterlinck are as poetic refreshing and inspiring as those of any modern day nature writer. The first English edition first printing issued a year after the original French edition. 8vo. xvi 225pp. Decorated green cloth lettered and bordered in gold at the spine and upper board. Top edge gilt others untrimmed. The title page printed in red and black. A little darkening to the cloth at the backstrip and the ends there a little worn. Corners tips gently bumped and with a single tiny blemish to the base of the upper board. Free endpapers very lightly toned and with a little spotting to several preliminary and concluding leaves and to occasional text leaves. Contemporary former owner initials inked to the front pastedown and former dealer's details discreetly inkstamped to the base of a blank flyleaf. Binding just a little tender at one gathering. A very good copy. Walkley's ten-page introduction precedes ten of the Nobel Laureate's reflective mystical essays - his first such collection three essays which appeared in the original French edition are here omitted.
