Original 1911 dustwrapper. Maurice Henry Hewlett 1861 1923 was an English historical novelist poet and essayist. He was educated at the London International College Spring Grove Isleworth and was called to the bar in 1891. He gave up the law after the success of Forest Lovers. From 1896 to 1901 he was Keeper of Lands Revenues Records and Enrolments a government post as adviser on matters of medieval law. He settled at Broad Chalke in Wiltshire. His friends included Evelyn Underhill and Ezra Pound whom he met at the Poet's Club in London. In a full cloth binding with gilt lettering and held in an unclipped dustwrapper. Externally smart with some very light wear to the extremities. Dustwrapper is worn. Chipping to the head and tail of the spine and also to the extremities. The cloth covered board embossed cover and matching top stain add up to a handsome edition possibly as desirable and rare as the first edition. The text block is solid clean and square. Endpapers are clear of markings with NO previous owner's signature but are slightly tanned. Spine tight boards rigid and tips pointed. There is no book club deboss on the rear cover. The jacket is in fine condition with bold colors on the cover. It looks spectacular in its shiny new plastic cover. Book League Selection ephemera for September 1938 enclosed.
