London: Macmillan and Co. Ltd. 1902. Rubbing marks and edgewear to extremities; especially around edges of spine. Faces of boards show signs of rubbing and discolouration. Pronounced rings to spine are rubbed and worn but gold lettering is still visible. Very nice gold pattern to the inside border of front and rear boards surrounding a blue/green/gold marble effect pattern. The hard cover is split at the top of spine on the front side by around 2cm and on the rear side a split stretches two thirds of the book. The joining sheet between the inside of the front board and the FEP has split the entire length but although it is split the page block and spine remain solid and attached. The same can be said for the rear also although this does not stretch the entire length. Previous owner's name to FEP. This is a very well made book and despite these emerging weaknesses it remains solid. Edge of page block is gold leaf and other than the first two blank pages that are age-spotted the pages are very clean and tight throughout. Text is bright and very readable. A very nice attractive book overall. hardcover. Acceptable/No Dust Jacket. Used. Macmillan and Co. Ltd. Hardcover

'The Forest Lovers' is set in France during the Romantic era and the experiences of Prosper le Gai in the mysterious forest of Morgraunt. Prosper is a happy-go-lucky guy intent only upon adventure. A confirmed bachelor happenstance suddenly compels him to marry a poor servant-girl in order to rescue her from being hanged as a witch or handed over to a false monk. In the end his wife Isoult la Desireé proves to be the long-lost daughter of the Countess Isabel Countess of Hauterive and Lady of Morgraunt. The motive of the story is the triumphant progress of Isoult's love for her knight and lord. The book is well named as the mysterious enchantment of the forest plays an important part in this medieval romance and the author has succeeded in combining real human interest with his fantastic setting. The spirit of the allegory pervades the work and evokes the atmosphere of some of Wagner's operas. Tipped in is a signed letter to publisher G.B. Burgin concerning author Israel Zangwill. <p>No dust jacket. The date on title page matches the date on the copyright page so I presume this is likely to be a first edition. The green cloth covers show mild wear for its age worn through only at the top and bottom of the rear spine hinge. The book is marred by hinge splits front and rear. The front split has resulted in the loss of the free endpaper and the half-title page hanging on by about 1.5 cm of untorn paper photo #5. The rear split is in the end paper and is less dramatic photo #6. Pages are deckle-edged with gilt top and are clean and tight. A fictionalized accounting of Richard and the Crusades. A somewhat scarce book.</p> The Macmillan Company hardcover
