‎Première édition française du journal des voyages du comte Maurice Auguste, comte De Benyowsky (1741-1786), lune des figures les plus romanesques de son époque, dont les aventures au Kamchatka, dans le nord du Pacifique, à Madagascar, et aux Etats-Unis durant la Guerre dIndépendance, firent une figure quasiment légendaire, par le biais de ces présents « Voyages et Mémoires ». Louvrage contient le récit des nombreuses péripéties de la vie de cet homme originaire dEurope de lEst (son pays de naissance est encore un objet de doute) qui, d'abord militaire en Pologne, fut ensuite exilé en Sibérie pour ses engagements politiques. Il séchappe avec quelques aventuriers qui lui restèrent attachés jusquà la fin, par la mer du Kamchatka en 1771, puis voyage au Japon, à Formose, aux Îles Kouriles et aux Îles Aléoutiennes, et même en Alaska. Arrivé à Paris, le fougueux jeune homme est remarqué par Louis XV qui lui propose de représenter la France à Madagascar. Il débarque sur l'île en 1774 à la tête dun corps de volontaires, fonde la ville de Louisbourg et envoie des expéditions dexploration. Ainsi découvre-t-il le plateau central où sera bâtie la future capitale Antananarivo. Benyowsky unifie de nombreux chefs locaux qui lélisent leur empereur (« Ampansacabe ») le 10 octobre 1776. Sa mission accomplie, Benyowsky rentre à Paris en 1776 pour y recevoir sa nomination au grade de commandant de Madagascar. Il se voit également décerner lordre de Saint Louis et bénéficie d'une pension à vie par Louis XVI. En 1777, il est amnistié pour sa participation à la rébellion polonaise et recouvre son titre et son grade grâce à Maria Theresa. Durant son séjour parisien, Benyowsky devient lami de Benjamin Franklin et connait dautres sympathisants de la cause de lindépendance américaine. En 1779, il se rend en Amérique sur les pas de son ami Pulaski. « La liberté dorée ne peut être désirée pour lor » écrit-il (en latin) dans une lettre adressée au Congrès. Il déclare être prêt à donner sa vie pour prouver sa loyauté. Il est autorisé à rejoindre le Général Pulaski à Savannah. Il combat également à Yorktown. En 1783, la paix revenue, il échoue à défendre les intérêts de la France à Madagascar, et Londres nest pas plus convaincue de ses projets. Cependant, il crée avec son ami le scientifique John Hyacinthe de Magellan (descendant du célèbre explorateur) une compagnie anglo-américaine dinvestissements chargée de promouvoir le commerce avec Madagascar. Il débarque ainsi à Baltimore le 8 juillet 1784 où il obtient le soutien de ses amis Pulaski, Zollikofer et Messonier pour armer LIntrépide, navire de 450 tonneaux et 20 hommes déquipage, quil charge de vivres et marchandises. Il parvient ainsi à Madagascar le 25 octobre 1784, mais sa tentative se solde cette fois-ci par un échec patent, tué quelques temps plus tard lors dune bataille contre les Français. En 1783, Benyovszky avait sollicité le gouvernement britannique pour obtenir son soutien à une expédition à Madagascar, avait remis à Jean Hyacinthe de Magellan ses mémoires, rédigés en français. La même année, Magellan les fait traduire en anglais et les publie en 1790 en quatre volumes par William Nicholson, intitulés « Mémoires et Voyages ». Les originaux sont aujourd'hui conservés au département des manuscrits de la British Library. Les mémoires furent rapidement traduits en allemand (Berlin, 1790 ; Vienne, 1816), en français : la présente édition (Paris, 1791), en néerlandais (Haarlem, 1791), en suédois (Stockholm, 1791), en polonais (Varsovie, 1797), en slovaque (Pressburg, 1808) et en hongrois (1888). Outre le succès de son uvre à la fin du XVIIIe siècle, Benyovszky a inspiré de nombreux écrivains, poètes et compositeurs. Huit opéras lui ont été dédiés , ainsi que des romans et une série télévisée intitulée « Vivat Benyovszky », qui retracent également son histoire. Une vie si extraordinaire ne pouvait pas ne pas susciter de doutes quant à sa véracité, méfiance qui fut encore renforcée par les divers problèmes qui entourèrent la publication de la première édition (mort de lauteur, échec de la souscription, incendie qui ravagea latelier du graveur). Nicholson, dans sa préface, se fait donc très insistant sur lexactitude de la relation, appuyant ses dires sur des comparaisons avec dautres relations et des références à des cartes. Le texte nen demeure pas moins : « lune des premières et des plus essentielles relations pour la côte Nord-ouest américaine en général et lAlaska en particulier ». (Lada Mocarski), avec ses captivants passages décrivant la Sibérie, le Kamchatka, le Japon, la Chine et le Nord du Pacifique, et ses intéressants développements sur la Sibérie, le commerce des fourrures russe, et lhistoire, les murs et les coutumes du Kamchatka. « Lauteur donne aussi des descriptions des Kouriles et des îles Aléoutiennes, et prétend avoir atteint lAlaska ? » (Hill). « Dans les pages du journal consacrées à lAlaska, se trouvent une très bonne relation des Îles Aléoutiennes ainsi quune histoire des premiers voyages des Russes en Alaska. First French edition of the travel journal of Count Maurice Auguste, Count De Benyowsky (1741-1786), one of the most romantic figures of his time, whose adventures in Kamchatka, the North Pacific, Madagascar, and the United States during the War of Independence made him almost legendary, through these Travels and Memoirs. The book contains the account of the many adventures in the life of this man from Eastern Europe (his country of birth is still a matter of doubt) who, initially a soldier in Poland, was then exiled to Siberia for his political commitments. He escaped with a few adventurers who remained loyal to him until the end, via the Sea of Kamchatka in 1771, then traveled to Japan, Formosa, the Kuril Islands, the Aleutian Islands, and even Alaska. Upon arriving in Paris, the fiery young man caught the attention of Louis XV, who offered him the opportunity to represent France in Madagascar. He landed on the island in 1774 at the head of a corps of volunteers, founded the city of Louisbourg, and sent out exploration expeditions. This is how he discovered the central plateau where the future capital, Antananarivo, would be built. Benyowsky united many local chiefs, who elected him their emperor (Ampansacabe) on October 10, 1776. His mission accomplished, Benyowsky returned to Paris in 1776 to receive his appointment as commander of Madagascar. He was also awarded the Order of Saint Louis and received a lifetime pension from Louis XVI. In 1777, he was granted amnesty for his participation in the Polish rebellion and regained his title and rank thanks to Maria Theresa. During his stay in Paris, Benyowsky became friends with Benjamin Franklin and met other supporters of the American independence cause. In 1779, he traveled to America to follow in the footsteps of his friend Pulaski. Golden freedom cannot be desired for gold, he wrote (in Latin) in a letter to Congress. He declared that he was ready to give his life to prove his loyalty. He was allowed to join General Pulaski in Savannah. He also fought at Yorktown. In 1783, with peace restored, he failed to defend France's interests in Madagascar, and London was not convinced by his plans. However, he and his friend, the scientist John Hyacinthe de Magellan (a descendant of the famous explorer), created an Anglo-American investment company to promote trade with Madagascar. He landed in Baltimore on July 8, 1784, where he obtained the support of his friends Pulaski, Zollikofer, and Messonier to arm L'Intrépide, a 450-ton ship with a crew of 20, which he loaded with food and goods. He arrived in Madagascar on October 25, 1784, but this time his attempt ended in failure, and he was killed shortly afterwards in a battle against the French. In 1783, Benyovszky had asked the British government for support for an expedition to Madagascar and had given Jean Hyacinthe de Magellan his memoirs, written in French. That same year, Magellan had them translated into English and published them in 1790 in four volumes by William Nicholson, entitled Memoirs and Voyages. The originals are now kept in the manuscripts department of the British Library. The memoirs were quickly translated into German (Berlin, 1790; Vienna, 1816), French: the present edition (Paris, 1791), Dutch (Haarlem, 1791), Swedish (Stockholm, 1791), Polish (Warsaw, 1797), Slovak (Pressburg, 1808) and Hungarian (1888). In addition to the success of his work at the end of the 18th century, Benyovszky inspired many writers, poets, and composers. Eight operas have been dedicated to him, as well as novels and a television series entitled Vivat Benyovszky, which also recount his story. Such an extraordinary life could not fail to raise doubts as to its veracity, a mistrust that was further reinforced by the various problems surrounding the publication of the first edition (the author's death, the failure of the subscription, and a fire that ravaged the engraver's workshop). Nicholson, in his preface, therefore insists on the accuracy of the account, supporting his claims with comparisons to other accounts and references to maps. The text remains nonetheless one of the earliest and most essential accounts of the American Northwest Coast in general and Alaska in particular. The author also gives descriptions of the Kuril Islands and the Aleutian Islands, and claims to have reached Alaska? (Hill). "In the pages of the journal devoted to Alaska, there is a very good account of the Aleutian Islands as well as a history of the first Russian voyages to Alaska. (Lada Mocarski). Volume 2 contains a very important study of Madagascar (Chadenat). A fine copy preserved in its original binding.‎
