Catalogue des Estampes Livres Ouvrages a Figures Antiquités et Curiosités du Cabinet…Par Duchesne Aîné et Dubois. Dont la Vente se fera le Lundi 2 Avril 1832 et jours suivans…
viii 63 pp. 8vo attractive antique calf-backed paste-paper boards spine gilt red morocco lettering piece on spine. Paris: Dubois 1832.

A rare sale catalogue of a varied and rich collection formed by one of Napoleon’s trusted advisors. Hauterive 1754-1830 statesman and archivist fled from the Revolution to the United States where he served as French consul in New York. He was recalled to France by Talleyrand to a high post in the office of foreign affairs in 1798. The two collaborated on De L’État de la France à la fin de l’an VIII 1800 which justified Napoleon’s coup d’état to the world. D’Hauterive entered Napoleon’s inner circle and significantly shaped the foreign policy of Napoleonic France. He was essential in the drafting of the Concordat of 1801 and his influence shines through in the final document. A disagreement with Talleyrand led to d’Hauterive’s reassignment to the archives of the foreign ministry where he distinguished himself and was elected a member of the Académie des inscriptions et belles-lettres in 1820.

627 lots. At the beginning of the catalogue the experts of this sale Duchesne and Dubois highlight some of the finer pieces in the collection such as prints by Dürer Schongauer Lucas van Leyden Rembrandt Hollar Poussin Rubens etc.; the famous books of Piranesi no. 167 Buffon no. 348 and Le Vaillant no. 350; and artifacts from Greece Italy Egypt as well as Hawaii California and Alaska. One section lists “Objets fabriqués par des peuples sauvages.†D’Hauterive also possessed an impressive library of illustrated books which is described herein including books on architecture natural history costumes emblems voyages and a handful of manuscripts.

Nice copy we find none in North America. As in most cases the present copy lacks the supplement of 13 pages.

⧠Lugt 12936. N.B.G. Vol. 23 cols. 587-92. unknown

Magazine. 52 bound volumes most with the original wrappers bound in and 16 individual issues in wrappers. Octavos. A near-complete run from 1889-1951 of Poet Lore an influential American literary magazine that first introduced to the English speaking world many important European dramatists and writers. Founded in 1889 as a magazine devoted to Shakespeare and Browning it soon became indispensable to readers on the lookout for new writers from Europe Russia and Asia by publishing their works in often the first English translations.

These include Henrik Ibsen August Strindberg and the lyric poet Frédéric Mistral. Also included in this run are the first English translations of dramatic works by Maurice Maeterlinck Gerhart Hauptmann and Arthur Schnitzler; and the first authorized English translations of works by Maxim Gorky Anton Chekhov Gabriele D'Annunzio and Georges Duhamel. (CLARKE, Maurice D, compiled by)
Manchester: A Brief Record of Its Past and a Picture of Its Present
Manchester NH: John B. Clarke 1875. Hardcover. Very Good. First edition. Preface by John B. Clarke. 462 8pp. Illustrated with black and white plates. Green cloth covered boards with gilt. Owner’s label on the front pastedown Randolph Langenbach’s name stamped on the front free endpaper an inscription before the title page the spine slightly cocked and several tears to the cloth of the spine very good. Randolph Langenbach is known for his photography and writing which documents the textile mill towns of New England. His association with this book is of note as some of his important work was conducted in Manchester: “His groundbreaking work on the Amoskeag Mills in Manchester N.H. resulted in a series of exhibitions and the book Amoskeag: Life and Work in an American Factory City†“Art in Embassies†US Department of State. Also of note is the inscription not Langenbach's which reads: "A premium for getting up club of subscribers for Mirror & Farmer for 1877." Mirror & Farmer was an agricultural newspaper printed in the region. It seems one of their employees received the book for a job well done; the employee was very likely the owner of the bookplate M.F. Little. John B. Clarke hardcover

Paris: La Vie Parisienne 1922. The March 18 1922 Issue 60e annee No 11. Illustrations by Cheri Herouard; Maurice Milliere; Georges Pavis; Pierre Lissac; Armand Vallee et al. Text in French. Illustrated wraps folio 13.75" x 10.5" 17 pp. 207 through 223 for the volume plus covers. Slender but large: folio size. See scans. Some cover soiling wrinkling wear and very small scale chips; contents sharp bright about Very Good overall; nice condition for this thin-but-large fragile weekly. Glossy covers; first and last few internal pages are on newsprint else all glossy. Rather spectacular full-page color illustrations in every issue in fact by the coterie of guys who knew how to do what you see here. In the case of this issue Cheri Herouard; Maurice Milliere; Georges Pavis; Pierre Lissac; Armand Vallee are credited for the big stuff but some of the other very credit-worthy art is uncredited. See scans. Cute humor from the same mood as mutoscope cards or perhaps a bit only a bit more refined yields the cover art caption: "Impertinence de Mi-Careme / Un Pied de Nez" for which I do not know the colloquial translation for an artful depiction of a young lass about to don a mask; on the back cover a king welcomes a brand spanking new young queen who flirts with the old guy for her own reasons as he gushes admiration of her. Understandably. Similar captioning throughout. Gentle titillation. Even the occasional partial nudity is rather tasteful and soft though humorously flirtatious. All of the full page efforts are eminently frame-able and at this time of a sensibility midway-evolved between nouveau and deco as is much of the uncredited b&w illustration. An original - and of course first and only edition - of the 3/18/1922 issue of this memorable and long-lived French weekly offering of very soft very artful light erotica. The captioned illustrations by the eminent "dessins" luminaries named above and others in their clan are what really "make" this issue as was generally the case through the era but cartoons serial fiction and around-town pieces nicely compliment those. Gorgeous oversized large color illustrations are what you collect these for. l-LNG1

La Vie Parisienne paperback
