In November 1890 he presented a doctoral dissertation in natural science on blood clotting Recherehes sur la coagulation du sang. Drawing a close analogy between blood and milk Arthus discovered that calcium was a necessary component of milk clotting a fact that had recently been shown for blood clotting. Both blood and milk clotting also require a ferment. Arthus worked on the chemistry of milk and blood proteins and on the physiology of milk digestion and of milk and blood clotting. Mais voyez où gît le démon je n'ose pas écrire le génie votre suggestion a déclenché quelque chose qui fait que j'ai déjà couché sur le papier quelques aphorismes: 'Un médecin qui en examinant son malade pense à l'intérêt que pourrait présenter l'autopsie peut être un grand médecin ; il n'est pas un bon médecin.' Et en voici un autre que je ne résiste pas au plaisir de vous décocher: 'L'homme intelligent qui a des idées préconçues est plus sujet à l'erreur et commet plus de fautes que l'imbécile'; mais les gens intelligents peuvent-ils avoir des idées préconçues' J'ai pris connaissance avec intérêt de ce que vous avez écrit en complément de la conférence de Vanotti et je l'ai envoyé à la Rédaction de la revue romande. Je ne sais encore si Vanotti a envoyé son manuscrit. S'il ne l'a pas fait il y aurait lieu de modifier le début de votre petit article pour mieux expliquer pour quelles raisons vous l'avez écrit ." unknown
