The Ring of Dancers: Images of Faroese Culture
"Scattered in the North Atlantic 300 miles off Iceland and 400 miles off Norway lies an archipelago-- the Faroe Islands. At present, (of 1981) an internally self-governing dependency of Denmark, the Faroes have kept their culture alive in part by elaborating certain elements of that culture as badges of self-consciousness. 'The Ring of Dancers' is composed of af a series of studies of aspects of Faroese life, language, and folkways. The Faroes are introduced as the Faroese themselves conceive them-- as islands both joined and separated by the waterways round about them. The archipelago is visualized in terms of such waterways as fjords, the points of the compass, 'home' villages, and natural and political districts. The authors also discuss Faroese society as the Faroese conceived it around 1890, by an analysis of a then popular folktale about the Ashlad. Placed in its social context, the tale appears as a kind of folk editorial on changing values and changing times. Perhaps the most important symbol of Faroese identity is the Faroese language. Although it was not made a written language until the 1840s, and was not widely written or read until the 1890s, Faroese has replaced Danish as the islands' official language. In gaining its formal register, it has come to express a modern sense of what it means to be Faroese. The most spectacular Faroese custom, the grindadrap-- the slaughter of schools of pilot whales and the celebration that follows the catch-- typifies the continuity of the Faroes' anciently rooted identity. The image of the dansiringur-- the authors contend, represents the Faroese adaptation of large forms to a land of closely known neighbors and landscapes, the complex inward turnings of Faroese culture, its tortuous sense of wholeness. In 12° (13,1×7,4 cm); tre tomi in un volume: (16), 114, (14) pp. e una c. di tav. più volte ripiegata (rilegato nella seconda parte), 40 pp., (16), 148, (2), 17, (9) pp. Legatura coeva in piena pergamena rigida con titolo manoscritto al dorso. Bellissima antiporta figurata alla prima opera. Testatine, finalini ed iniziali xilografiche. Prima edizione completa, un’edizione precedente dove era presente solo il primo volume, uscì nel 1647 e priva anche di parte delle illustrazioni. Bartholin Thomas e Ole Worm sono stati due dei medici e professori più famosi della Danimarca del seicento dando grandi contributi alla medicina mondiale. Bartholin in particolare portò avanti le ricerche di Harvey sulla circolazione sanguigna e diventando uno dei pionieri dell’analisi del sistema linfatico. Ma unire i due grandi studiosi era la passione per la storia e l’archeologia mettendo insieme due delle più ampie ed interessanti collezioni di reperti archeologici e curiosità d’Europa. L’opera qui presentata, completa di tutte le sue parti, è uno dei più importanti repertori sui braccialetti, gioielli, monili antichi pubblicati fino a quel momento. Ricchissimo di immagini, il volume descrive dettagliatamente diversi gioielli antichi nella loro forma, materiale, utilizzo e valore rituale. Per i numerosi riferimenti ai simboli segreti di alcuni gioielli l’opera è citata anche nella Biblioteca Esoterica n. 233 “est question dans cet ouvrage… non seulement de la licorne, mais aussi d’animaux cornus et de monstres humains, par exemple de François Trouillet qui vivait aux environs de 1599 et avait au milieu du front une véritable corne de bélier”. Infatti Worm fu uno dei principali sostenitori del fatto che i corni venduti come corni di Unicorno fossero in verità corni di Narvalo. Curioso però notare che Worm fece esperimenti per testare le qualità magiche curative dei corni arrivando a concludere che essi avevano la capacità di combattere gli avvelenamenti se ingeritisbriciolati. In folio (50x58 cm il foglio). Esemplare in fine coloritura coeva ed in ottime condizioni di conservazione. Magnifica e vivida tiratura di questa celeberrima carta del territorio della Danimarca e di parte della penisola scandinava. Edita per la prima volta intorno agli anni 30’ del settecento da Matthaus Seutter, la carta venne poi ripresa, aggiornata e corretta dal suo successore e cognato (sposò una delle figlie di Seutter), il cartografo, editore ed incisore Tobias Conrad Lotter (1717 - 1777). Lotter, si formò alla bottega di Matthaus Seutter per il quale lavorò. Alla morte di Seutter ne rilevò l’attività che portò avanti fino al 1777 anno della sua morte. L’attività passo poi al figlio, Matthias Albrecht Lotter. Tobias Conrad fu uno dei più apprezzati cartografi del settecento. La carta riproduce il territorio della penisola danese, del Ducatus Holsatia, delle isole danesi del mar baltico. Un bel cartiglio animato, collocato al margine alto destro della carta, descrive il contenuto della mappa. Il cartiglio è sormontato dallo stemma della corte danese. Bellissima tiratura in tiratura non comune.
