The text is illustrated with 17 black and white photographs and one foldout map at the rear of the book showing the territory of Papua in 1938. Gray coloured boards with green titles to the backstrip. A little rubbing to the book corners and to the head and to the heel of the backstrip. Foxing and browning to the text block edges. Light browning and offset tanning to the endpapers and like age training to the internal text. Original bookseller's sticker to the lower right-hand corner of the front paste-down. Plain text dustwrapper with white and green background and white and green titles to the front panel and white titles to the backstrip. Rubbing and chipping to the dustwrapper corners and to the head and to the heel of the backstrip. The white of the background has become yellow foxed and shows quite marked handling. A little rubbing to the dustwrapper edges and a small tear to the top edge of the rear dustwrapper panel and the results of insect activity can be seen to the top and bottom edges of the front dustwrapper panel. There is a 1.5 " tear to the lower right-hand corner of the rear dustwrapper panel. Clipping of the dustwrapper front fold over lower right-hand corner. The clipping is done in a square rather than rectangular manner. The author gives the rationale as for Australia taking Papua as a protectorate in 1907. Also given development to time of books' publication religion/sorcery of the native Papuans education and exploration. Second Edition. Size: 8vo - over 7�" - 9�" tall. Richard Hayley Lever was born in Adelaide; he sailed for Europe in 1893 and lived in Paris and London before settling in St Ives Cornwall in 1902. He emigrated to America in 1912 where he became recognised as a significant artist. The auctioneer's note put this sale in perspective: 'Unbelievably these paintings lay unstretched collecting dust for approximatley eighty years in a Cornish attic until their recent discovery. One edge very slightly chipped; one tiny marginal tear expertly repaired; a fine copy detached from a bound volume with the preceding one-leaf parliamentary paper retained for the time being for protection. South Australian Parliamentary Paper Number 57 of 1875 no text accompanied this map. McLaren 12530-31-32 are confusing confused: the first entry refers to this item by correct Parliamentary Paper number but the title is incorrect; the third entry shows the correct title for a map accompanying the journal published the following year as SAPP19 of 1876. Feeken Feeken and Spate comment on the fact that although Lewis reported his arrival at Beltana on 12 July 1875 after completing his surveys 'Curiously the map of his surveys was signed by Surveyor-General Goyder already on 15 July'. We have not inspected the map issued in 1876 but the present copy contains a lithographed note that may explain the apparent anomaly: 'Copied from Plan forwarded by J.W. Lewis Esq. in the Office of The Surveyor General by Edwin S. Berry and H.C. Talbot . June 15th 1875'. Little is known about J.W. Lewis not to be confused with John Lewis of 'Fought and Won' fame but he accompanied Warburton across the Great Sandy Desert in 1872-73. 'Warburton admitted that Lewis had several times saved the party from perishing on that epic journey' Feeken. An abridged account of Lewis' Lake Eyre expedition will be found in Threadgill along with a reduced facsimile of a later version of the map which includes 'a detailed examination of the course of the Barcoo as far as Innamincka'.
