Up to 1864 all desertions reported occurred in NSW mainly Port Jackson but from 1864 notices of Victorian desertions began to appear with other colonies and New Zealand and Fiji following. Yellow coloured cloth covered boards with black embossed titles to the front panel and backstrip. This is the memoirs of Leslie Robert Menzies who went to New Zealand from his home land of America and then from there followed the gold rush to Australia. With his courage and fearlessness was put into positions of power and responsibility exploring and opening up new areas for farmlands and mineral deposits. Heavy bumping rubbing and fraying to the book corners and to the head and to the heel of the backstrip. Water marks to three quarters of the front panel and backstrip with a few spots to the back panel. Handling marks to the book panels and Browning and foxing to the text block edges and throughout the text original bookseller's sticker to the lower right-hand corner of the front paste-down. Cracking of the hinge between the frontispiece and half title page. The frontispiece has become detached from the rest of the text block. Size: 8vo - over 7�" - 9�" tall. In 1894 over 500 people mainly recent migrants from Brisbane moved en masse to the Gayndah area of Queensland where they established three communes- Bon Accord Resolute and Byrnestown. There was to be be no private property or income with everything belonging to the socialist collective. These communes prospered for a while but with the loss of political support their communal leases were extinguished.
