1880. Very good condition. Four glossy albumen photographs two images of the Sydney Heads & the 3rd possibly the Manly Esplanade area a cove with a curving promenade. The 4th image is of two women in long white summer dresses and holding dark parasols just passing in front of a colonnaded building possibly Melbourne where horse drawn carriages await passengers. Images 4 3/4 x 3 3/4" slightly smaller than postcard size. Contemporary penciled numbers on the verso of 351 359 360 & 369. <br/><br/> unknown

Photographic Illuminated Address
A very large albumen paper photograph reproducing an illuminated address presented to John Dunn Esq. J.P. of Mount Barker 1802-1904 member of Parliament and prominent wheat merchant and miller in early colonial South Australia by the workers of J. Dunn & Co. on the occasion of his retirement in May 1889. The address the original of which was illustrated and illuminated by W.G.P. Joyner gives an indication of the scale and importance of Dunn's enterprises: '. by your perseverance energy and strict integrity you have overcome all obstacles and today you have the satisfaction of leaving to your successors the largest milling and wheat business in the Southern Hemisphere'
Image size approximately 325 x 263 mm on the original ruled mount visible surface 430 x 365 mm framed and glazed. The photograph is beginning to lift slightly at two corners; mount slightly soiled at one corner; frame a little scuffed and marked; overall in excellent condition. On the reverse is the paper label of 'S. Solomon Photographer 51 Rundle Street Adelaide'. An article in the 'South Australian Chronicle' for 8 June 1889 describes the circumstances of the presentation of the address and describe the original in detail. 'The address is the work of Mr. Joyner and is one of his most artistic productions . The words and the signatures which number 105 being those of most of the leading employ�s are situated in the centre while all around are well executed paintings of a number of the mills belonging to the firm taken from photographs. In the left-hand corner there is a painting of the site of the original mill at Hay Valley . On the top are Mr. Dunn's residence at Mount Barker 'The Laurels' and the Dunn Memorial Church which that gentleman presented to the residents of Mount Barker while the right hand corner is occupied by a view of the firm's stores and offices in Freeman-street Adelaide now Gawler Place. On the left side of the address there are views of the mills at Wilmington the old mill at Port Adelaide and at Mount Barker and two representations of the new Roller Eclipse mill at Port Adelaide. On the other side the Nairne mill takes precedence while underneath it is the gem of the collection the works at Port Pirie including some of the shipping of the port with the railway in front. The Port Augusta and Bridgewater mills are represented and an excellent portrait of Mr. Dunn is also included in the set.' A number of the source photographs are to be found in a Dunn family photograph album now held by the State Library of South Australia PRG 1485/3. Dunn's entry in the 'Australian Dictionary of Biography' records that 'he retired in 1889 and died at Mount Barker on 13 October 1894. The firm's eleven mills five with the most modern machinery then represented an investment of �150000. They annually had an export trade of some 20000 tons of flour to Britain Western Australia New South Wales and South Africa some 400 employees and a payment to farmers of �500000'. unknown

Australia 1890. Cabinet card views showing a group of men obviously enjoying their day out in the bush. The location is unknown but there is a rather large lake and the town has a goodly collection of stone buildings approximately sixteen properties with some two story homes and a couple of elongated buildings. There is a magnificent group shot of 4 men posing with their guns tent and dog. Their tucker bag is hanging in the tree and a lake with rowboat is behind them; the town view with a main street; a bush scene with a lake and a fellow standing beside his tent; a view of gum trees with a seated man taking aim a terrier & a lake behind him; a detailed view of the tent with two shotguns perched in front; two bush scenes and two beside the rather large lake. A bit of light scattered foxing otherwise quite bright. Nine cabinet cards images approx. 6 1/4 x 4 3/8" mounted on slightly larger stiff card no photographer listed. <br/><br/> unknown

1886. Very good condition. Very large albumen photograph of Sydney's harbor of the area now known as Farm Cove with the Charles Bayliss stamp at the lower left corner. Charles Bayliss 1850 - 1897 one of Australia's preeminent landscape photographers who worked for years with Merlin and Holtermann before setting up his own shop in Sydney in 1879. He established his studio at 348 George Street; then moved to 335a George Street advertising himself as a photographer of city and country views often with people and making views to be sold individually while also contributing images for albums. He also made remarkable 360 degree panoramas of the city of Sydney around this time. Mounted on a page from an album with handwritten caption in pencil. "C. Bayliss Photo Sydney". 10 3/4 x 8" 20 x 27cm print; album page: 16 x 12". Trove 41642848 cites a photograph of the same title but at a much smaller scale 20 x 15cm. <br/><br/> unknown

An original gelatin silver photograph 110 x 90 mm mounted on stiff card 220 x 170 mm inscribed in white ink on the mount beneath the photograph: 'With Christmas Greetings from Dr and Mrs Ramsay Smith'. It is stamped on the rear 'Photo. by Dr. W. Ramsay Smith' and captioned in his hand 'At Port Vila - New Hebrides'
Ramsay Smith describes 'picture-making' at Port Vila in detail in his 1924 book 'In Southern Seas' and this image contains all the elements referred to: one's wife 'for comparison and relief to the various objects in the picture' the harbour as background to the wooded heights the ship in the distance . The corners of the mount are slightly rounded and both the image and the mount are a little foxed; overall it is an attractive item with more than the usual amount of background information. William Ramsay Smith 1859-1937 physician naturalist anthropologist civil servant soldier - and controversy was often never far away see the Australian Dictionary of Biography. His entry there states that 'Believing that tribal Aborigines were dying out he recorded their folklore in 'Myths and Legends of the Australian Aborigines' London 1930. Subsequent to this being published Dr Philip Jones has also recorded in the ADB that from the early 1920s David Unaipon 1872-1967 the Aboriginal preacher author and inventor 'studied Aboriginal mythology and compiled his versions of legends . Gathered before 1930 the legends are in his surviving manuscript in the Mitchell Library: they were commissioned and published by William Ramsay Smith without acknowledgment'. unknown

Octavo ii frontispiece ii title leaf vi 118 vi book review pages with 2 mounted albumen paper photographs one is a frontispiece portrait of Stephenson 87 � 57 mm; the other is of a sketch presumably by Stephenson 103 � 57 mm. The book review reprinted from the South Australian Register December 28 1865 has been folded down the middle before being bound in. Full morocco now expertly rebacked all edges gilt contemporary but probably not original - we have only seen blind-stamped cloth before; corners worn front and rear covers a little scuffed; overall a very good copy. One of the earliest Australian imprints illustrated with original photographs see Holden: 'Photography in Colonial Australia' Sydney 1988 where it is incorrectly referred to in the text and index as Stevensen. The first essay the St Peter's Collegiate School Prize Essay of 1864 is entitled 'The Difficulties of Colonization in the Northern Territory' 17 pages; another two pages are devoted to the importance of the acquisition of the Northern Territory to South Australia. Almost half the book 58 pages is given over to verse by Stephenson who died at the age of 18 in May 1865. Inscribed on an early blank in what we know to be the hand of Charles Todd to 'Mr Edwd Stirling Junr / Xmas 1865'; with the pictorial bookplate 'Gang forward' of Edward Charles Stirling. Ferguson 16245; Holden 103. We have previously sold a copy inscribed by Todd to his daughter on 4 December 1865 in which the review was loosely inserted as an eight-page pamphlet. The Christmas inscription and the inclusion of the review not published until 28 December suggest that this morocco binding came after the event. Andrews, Thomas, and Clark hardcover

The plates are of drawings by Hamilton; he contributed similar sketches to the published journals of Grey and Eyre. The first edition was not photographically illustrated. Hand captioned real photo illustrated commemorative album presented to Marquess of Salisbury and members of the United Kingdom Branch of the Empire Parliamentary Association on the occasion of their visit to Canberra to present Australia with a Speakers Chair. The album covers activities and places visited around Australia during their visit. Images include: 1. A view inside Parliament on the occasion of the presentation of the speakers chair. 2. "Fuddy" Lake Eacham Queensland. A well dressed Aborigine is pictured heating water in large tin over a fire no doubt preparing the delegation their afternoon tea. 3. Duntroon Royal Military College garden party with delegates drinking their tea. 4. View of East Perth from near the observatory. 5. Group of settlers West Australia. Loosely inserted at the front of the album is a glossy photo portrait of 4 delegation members with names noted in pencil on verso: Dr. Williams Mr. Butcher Mr. Hewart and Mr. Byrne and the location noted as Adelaide South Australia. A printed version of this collection was subsequently issued for public use along with a collection of glass plate photos with an accompanying explanatory booklet. Each of the different versions is accompanied by variant photos. "With the compliments of the Commonwealth of Australia Empire Parliamentary Association" printed at the front wrapper and an Australian Government book label inside the rear cover. Oblong 8vo album not paginated 32 photographs including the loose image roughly 8 x 6 1/2". Stiff gray paper wrappers title printed in black at front wrapper bound with gray cord. Top of spine chipped otherwise very good condition with the photographs bright and clean each captioned in white. Le scritte indicanti la specie e la descrizione della pianta o animale sono in italiano e/o latino, e provengono dalla prima edizione italiana del Dizionario di scienze naturali edito da Battelli nel 1831. Quest'opera imponente era composta da 29 volumi ed era corredata da centinaia di incisioni che rappresentavano tutto il mondo animale e vegetale. L'opera deriva da un eccellente lavoro di luminari del XVIII secolo supportati dal Re francese Louis XV in seguito guidati dallo stesso Turpin, considerato al tempo il più grande incisore di botanica. La maggior parte delle incisioni sono firmate Turpin & Pretre. Le incisioni sono veramente eccezionali con una grande dovizia di particolari e dipinte a mano. Carta bianchissima e resistente di ottima qualità. Formato foglio: cm 25,5x17. Formato incisione: 15,5x9 Autore: Corsi su disegno di Turpin In buone condizioni. Superb engraving made by the master Pierre Jean Francis Turpin. The engravings are written in latin and italian and come from the first italian edition of Dictionary of natural sciences edited by Battelli in 1831. This imponent work was made up by 29 volumes and contained hundreds of engravings that represented all the plant and animal kingdom. This work derives from an excellent work of luminaries of the 18th century supported by the french King Louis XV and then directed by the same Turpin that was considered as the greatest botanical engraver of his time. The most of his engravings are signed Turpin & Pretre. The engravings are made in an excellent way with fine details and coloured by hand. Very white strong paper of good quality. In good condition.
