America Looks to Australia: The Hidden Role of Richard Casey in the Creation of the Australia-America Alliance 1940-1942
North Melbourne: Australian Scholarly Publishing. 2017. MINT - a NEW copy. 212 pages. Australia's war-time Prime Minister John Curtin has a heroic status in Australian political history folklore. He stood up to British Prime Minister Churchill and American President Roosevelt courageously insisting that Australian troops be brought home to defend their nation against the expected Japanese invasion. However the praise and adulation that is heaped upon Curtin for creating the American Alliance is not justified. James Prior argues that the credit is rightly owed to Richard Casey who as Australia's first ambassador to the United States did more to secure American engagement with Australia in Pacific security than Curtin or anyone else. . Pritchard, Morris:
From the King's Marshall: A history of the Marshall family from the 12th Century to 1980. Early Descriptions of the United Kingdom, Adelaide, Goolwa, Hindmarsh Valley, Burra and Melbourne. (SIGNED BY AUTHOR)
VG no dj as issued. blue decorated boards are clean and crisptidy with faint bumps to corners. First Edition. prior owner's tiny book sticker to reverse of front board. signed and dedicated by author. Over 400 years ago, in the year 1560, the first traceable Marshall forebear of the author died at Little Tew, Oxfordshire, United Kingdom, this book endeavours to bridge the intervening years of family history to the year 1980. When beginning the necessary research for this story, the author already had in his possession many old documents and letters, dating back as early as 1810, which he had salvaged from his mothers home 20 years ago. With the assistance of a genealogist he was able to begin the Marshall story as long ago as the 12th century, with reference to a member of the Royal Staff of King Henry I, who is believed to have been an early family forebear. In dealing with ancestors over a period of 400 odd years, it has been necessary for the author to restrict the number of forebears written about at length. Those chosen for more detailed treatment in this work include John Marshall (1646-1735), the first Marshall to join the religious Quaker movement; Lucy Marshal, school mistress and poet (1811-1904) who emigrated to South Australia with her sister in 1850; Charles Stocker Morris (1851), journalist, poet, traveller and speculator' the authors grandfather who earns no good conduct marks for the way in which he treated his family; lastly, a branch of the Sturge family of U.K., with whom the Marshalls had an unusually close relationship over a long period of time. This book is LIMITED to 500 copies only. This copy being 275

PROUD Emily Dorothea
Welfare Work. Employers' Experiments for improving Working Conditions in Factories. With a Foreword by The Rt. Hon. David Lloyd-George
London: G. Bell and Sons Ltd 1916. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. London G. Bell and Sons Ltd. 1916. Octavo iii-xx 364 last colophon pages. Full morocco ruled in blind on the sides with gilt lettering and blind-ruled raised bands on the spine; all edges gilt; leather a little rubbed and lightly marked; one opening partially discoloured by an acidic bookmark; basically an excellent copy in a contemporary deluxe binding. Emily Dorothea Pavy nee Proud 1885-1967 teacher sociologist and lawyer was awarded the first Catherine Helen Spence scholarship for sociology in 1912. 'She left next year for the London School of Economics where she investigated the industrial conditions of female factory workers DSc 1916. Her thesis was published as "Welfare Work" London 1916; the term described employers' initiatives to achieve harmonious relations with their workers by providing conditions and amenities which would both humanize the industrial environment and increase productivity. Proud's book examined the "betterment" of such conditions and welfare policies for women in British factories. Her research drew on her many factory visits across Britain and observations in Australasia; before leaving Adelaide she had gained first-hand experience as an unskilled factory-worker in New Zealand. She believed that welfare measures could enhance the "recognition of individuality" and the standard of living - it was neither demeaning charity nor the mechanistic efficiency disdained by some Australians. Marion Phillips considered that Proud took "the whole subject of welfare work out of the range of philanthropy into that of social economics". Prime Minister Lloyd George who contributed an enthusiastic preface to "Welfare Work" had established a welfare department at the Ministry of Munitions under the direction of B. Seebohm Rowntree whom Proud was appointed to assist in 1915-19. A "live wire" she proved accessible and unaffected in the position and organized factory inspections to ensure the health and output of women workers in a vital industry. In 1917 the British government appointed her CBE' 'Australian Dictionary of Biography'. This copy was recently purchased from the dispersal of the deceased estate of the author's son. G.
