AUSTRALIA: VEDANTA AVABAMIA Sister editor

First page of Vol. V No. 1 wrinkled else very good. No copies located by OCLC Sister Avabamia nee Mary Elizabeth Stevenson was a disciple of Swami Abhedananda who was one one of Sri RamakrishnaÕs early followers. She became a devotee after hearing Swami Vivekenanda speak in San Francisco around the turn of the century. Sister Avabamia was the leading light for the Vendantic Movement in Australia and New Zealand. In 1910 the Fitzroy City News described her thusly - ÒThe gifted lecturer delivered two lectures every Sunday in the Masonic Hall and during the week held two meetings. Her work carried conviction of its absolute truthfulness and her words of wisdom must have been the result of laborious thought. Though a student for 25 years Sister Avabamia with native modesty says her knowledge is only Òlike a spoonful of water in the ocean.Ó She has a fine personality; robed in her renunciation dress she shows a force of character and a brilliant ability to combat the problems of lifeÉ In the fall of 1911 Sister Avabamia went to Ceylon and India and established some new Vedanta Centers which the Swamis at Belur Math did not recognize. Inspired by VivekenandaÕs educational ideas she established two schools in Ceylon which were eventually taken over by the Ramakrishna Mission. In 1912 she left India and broke away from the Ramakrishna Order. News of her activities for the years 1905-12 appear in the monthly journal she initiated The Star of the East later named the Vedanta Universal Messenger published first in Sydney and then in Melbourne AustraliaÓ Stavig; Western Admirers of Ramakrishna and His Disciples. Vivekananda was one of the main representatives of Neo-Vedanta a modern interpretation of selected aspects of Hinduism in line with western esoteric traditions especially Transcendentalism New Thought and Theosophy. His reinterpretation was and is very successful creating a new understanding and appreciation of Hinduism within and outside India and was the principal reason for the enthusiastic reception of yoga transcendental meditation and other forms of Indian spiritual self-improvement in the West. TRIAL OF THE CASE MUDIE V. KINCHELA FOR HORSEWHIPPING THE PLAINTIFF IN THE SUPREME COURT OF NEW SOUTH WALES ON MONDAY OCTOBER 26 1840. BEFORE THE HON. MR. JUSTICE WILLIS AND A SPECIAL JURY
Sydney: W.A. Duncan Australasian Chronicle Office 1840. 52pp. Dbd. Minor toning some loose leaves. Good. A rare trial account of a peculiar though perhaps an oddly-justified assault in Australia in 1840. "James Mudie had in his book THE FELONRY OF NEW SOUTH WALES reflected upon the capacity of Kinchela's father in his office as judge. The younger Kinchela waited for Mudie who had recently returned to the colony and administered many lashes one witness said 50 with a horsewhip. The defence was that Mudie well deserved what he got as a common libeller and that Judge Kinchela was now aged and unable to take his own part. The jury returned a verdict for the plaintiff in the sum of 50 - one pound for each stroke" - Ferguson. Some might call the horsewhipping a simple case of frontier justice. Australia; Emigration
A form letter addressed "To the Overseers of the Parish of Mereworth Kent" advertising cheap passages for "Families Labourers and Poor Persons" emigrating to Australia and the British colonies; "Shovelling out paupers"
London 1836. Very good condition. In 19th c. England the practice of assisted emigration of the poor was sometimes referred to as "shovelling out paupers". In 1833 the Colonial Land and Emigration Commissioners CLEC were set up to manage emigration to Britain's colonies. Under the plan some emigrants could qualify for a free passage if they were under forty years of age of good character having been vaccinated against smallpox capable of labor and from occupations such as agricultural laborers shepherds or female domestic and farm servants. Young married couples without children were the most desired candidates. This circular was printed just one year following the enactment of a provision in which the cost of emigration would be borne by the emigrant's home parish Section 62 1834 Poor Law Amendment Act. The parish-funded emigration was overseen by the Poor Law Commissioners. The annual report of the Poor Law Commissioners of 1836 shows that 18 parishes in Kent participated sending 320 emigrants at a cost of 1823. Many emigrants went to Canada due to its proximity to Britain but South Australia which was designated a colony in 1836 offered a free passage until 1841. The popularity of Australia surged when the discovery of gold made the news in 1852. The printed circular with manuscript date March 1836 and Parish name advertising passage to North America or Australia at 3 to 4 a head for adults. The form letter begins "Gentlemen I beg to acquaint you that I am ready to Contract for the Conveyance of Families Labourers and Poor Persons to the British Colonies in North America Australia and the United States and likewise to Victual them if required which I can do at a much less expense than having them found by the Vessel." "Our packets are Sailing from here for Quebec New York Philadelphia Boston & c. Twice every Week during the Season." The printed address at the top "2 Upper East Smithfield Near the London Dock Entrance London." The circular is signed "C. Ciriackes" or Christoffer Ciriackes 1755 - 1758 who in 1828 was a clerk for Messrs. Beatson & Co. merchants and was a witness in a case before the Old Bailey; he also appears in the London Planet of September 20 1840 as Christopher Ciriackes provisions merchant at Devonshire Place London Fields. However Ciriackes had his own problems as a debtor as he appears under the heading 'Court for Relief of Insolvent Debtors' on November 5 1840: "Christopher Ciriackes late of No. 4 Devonshire-place London-fields near the Cat and Mutton Tavern . out of business . Provision Merchant and General Dealer". London Gazette 13 October 1840 p2270. 8vo printed on cream paper folded into envelope shape and posted with rubber stamp and seal. The rubber stamp reads "Ing St. Corner Hill". Mailed March 8 and addressed to "Off of the Overseers of the Parish of Mereworth Kent". Original folds very faintly creased.

unknown

Biography of Adelaide Ristori
Sydney: Caxton Steam Machine Printing Office 1871. Wraps. Very good - condition. Scarce biographical booklet the only one on Ristori published in Sydney describing the life of the Italian actress Adelaide Ristori renowned as a tragedienne. Ristori visited Australia with a large Italian entourage for 4 months in 1875 performing in Ballarat Melbourne and Sydney and this booklet was likely published as a promotional piece for the tour. This Australian booklet is not dated although Ferguson's Bibliography of Australia assigns a date ca. 1871. It was translated from Italian into English to be used as an advertising piece for Ristori's 1875 Australia tour. It was published at the Caxton printing office which was functioning under that name until 1876. Adelaide Ristori 1822 - 1906 toured widely including Paris 1855 1856 London Madrid 1857 and the United States 1866. The booklet describes Ristori's American visits: the first tour was mainly in the North the events of the Civil War making a stop in New Orleans impossible. Ristori did eventually visit there reciting pieces at the grand bazaar following which she "had to accept a sumptuous supper which was attended by the leading people of the South headed by the generals Beauregard and Lee". p19. In 1875 after one of her American tours she traveled to Australia where her company's lavish productions of historical drama were performed in Italian. Ristori performed the roles of Medea Mary Stuart and the title role in Elizabeth Queen of England written especially for her by Paolo Giacometti. Such was Ristori's popularity that in Victoria a company working several gold mines on the rich Berry Lead near Allendale north of Ballarat was named Ristori after her. This led to an adjoining town being named Ristori Town. 8vo 29pp. Printed glossy paper wrappers the title printed in black at front wrapper with "Adelaide Ristori" in an elaborate type font. Staplebound. The wrappers slightly dusty the rear wrapper with two small areas where the gloss surface of the wrapper has been rubbed away; small amount of fox spotting to final leaves.
