Seuls le titre et le faux-titre sont changés. Pour le reste, même composition et même papier.Launay 28.Exemplaire dans une élégante reliure, avec le nom du collectionneur frappé au bas du dos : Mr Piquemal.FAUCHERY (Antoine)Beau type d’aventurier, de rêveur audacieux. Banville, un de ses plus chers amis précise dans la préface pour un de ses livres : « Ai-je besoin de vous dire qu’il a commencé par être un très mauvais écolier ?... Il aurait été de force à planter les buissons lui-même sur les chemins qui mène à l’école. » Né en 1824 à Paris, il était fils d’un ménage de graveurs : Jean-Claude Auguste et Augustine Fauchery. Il sera lui-même peintre, puis graveur sur bois, écrivain, chroniqueur, voyageur, chercheur d’or. Dans les années 1850, haute époque de la bohème murgerienne, il était célèbre dans les ateliers pour ces deux préceptes : « Un loyer ne doit jamais être payé » et « tout déménagement s’effectue par la fenêtre ».En 1856 il fit jouer au Vaudeville une pièce intitulée Calino, faite en collaboration avec Barrière.Pendant toute sa brève existence il fut la proie du démon du voyage et de l’aventure. Dès 1848 ses instincts généreux le firent partir pour la Pologne. « La voix de Mierolawski appelait les réfugiés polonais et les Français patriotes à la défense de la Pologne, et quelques intrépides formaient déjà le projet d’aller mourir là, comme Byron dans le pays d’Homère » (Banville). Il fit le voyage en compagnie de Nadar. Les deux héros n’atteignirent jamais la patrie de Chopin, et connurent les pires mésaventures à travers l’Allemagne où ils furent emprisonnés dans toutes les principautés. En 1856 il eut l’idée d’aller chercher fortune en Australie où l’on avait découvert d’abondantes mines d’or. De là il embarqua pour les Philippines. En 1860 il tomba dans l’ « officiel » et fut nommé correspondant du Moniteur pour suivre l’armée française à Pékin pendant la guerre entre la France et la Chine. Maillard raconte dans son livre sur les derniers bohèmes que Fauchery était à peu près le seul Français qui sortait du Palais Yuen-Ming-Yuen les mains et les poches vides. A défaut d’objets précieux il emporta de cette campagne de Chine une maladie infectieuse. Arrivé à Yokohama il mourut d’une gastrite le 27 avril 1861 ; à l’âge de 37 ans. Cette mort lui évita de justesse une décoration que le Gouvernement français s’apprêtait à lui remettre.Malassis qui a toujours aimé les originaux, novateurs et marginaux ne pouvait manquer d’être séduit par cet aventurier poète.
