'It is not my intention to be drawn into any newspaper controversy either about what is contained in this book . or about the notes and appendix matter I have added to it. My friend and collaborator John P. Fletcher is at present serving as a conscientious objector under the English Military Service Act a term of two years' imprisonment inflicted upon him by a court-martial. On his release any criticisms of this book will receive from us the attention they deserve.' John Francis Hills 1867-1948 Friend Quaker teacher and anti-conscriptionist: 'in 1912 Hills and a visiting English Friend J.P. Fletcher founded the Australian Freedom League to campaign against compulsory military training. The league quickly extended to other States and at one time claimed 50000 members. Hills spoke often at public meetings and even paraded in a sandwich board at Victoria Park racecourse. The league was disbanded soon after the outbreak of World War I in 1914. Of his many pamphlets the most powerful probably was "Child Conscription: Our Country's Shame" 1912 which not only condemned military training but implicitly war itself. These themes were reiterated in the small book Hills and Fletcher wrote in 1915 "Conscription Under Camouflage" which was not published until 1919' 'Australian Dictionary of Biography'. Half leather and cloth; a fine set in the dark red felt-covered wooden box still in the original printed carton which is marked and a little damaged. A superb production limited to only 500 numbered sets this is number 66; not all of them were issued in these boxes as advertised. Apparently the successful tender was paid in full soon after the job began and the box-maker was last seen heading for the hills overseas with the money and a big smile! Many sets were issued with perspex lids which fitted snugly over the custom-made bases but they often proved to be a poor substitute. 3 items. Government Printer hardcover‎

IN THE PAPER THE NAME "AUSTRALIA" APPEARS PROBABLY FOR THE FIRST TIME IN A SCIENTIFIC MEMOIR p. 247.<br><br>The name Australia was popularised by Matthew Flinders who pushed for the name to be formally adopted as early as 1804. When preparing his manuscript and charts for his 1814 A Voyage to Terra Australis he was persuaded by his patron Sir Joseph Banks to use the term Terra Australis as this was the name most familiar to the public. Flinders did so but allowed himself the footnote:<br>"Had I permitted myself any innovation on the original term it would have been to convert it to Australia; as being more agreeable to the ear and an assimilation to the names of the other great portions of the earth." In the paper offered he used the name "Australia" as early as 1806.<br><br>CONCERNING THE DIFFERENCES IN THE MAGNETIC NEEDLE:<br>First printing of probably the first work to discover and correct for the errors of the compass caused by the iron in ships by the first circumnavigator of Australia.<br><br>"Captain Matthew Flinders RN 16 March 1774 - 19 July 1814 was one of the most successful navigators and cartographers of his age. In a career that spanned just over twenty years he sailed with Captain William Bligh circumnavigated Australia and encouraged the use of that name for the continent which had previously been known as New Holland. He survived shipwreck and disaster only to be imprisoned for violating the terms of his scientific passport by changing ships and carrying prohibited papers.
