Frost, Lucy [ed]
No Place for a Nervous Lady: Voices from the Australian Busht
First hand accounts in letters and diaries of the conditions experienced by the women who settled the Australian Bush in the 19th century. "From Annie Baxter, writing to sustain herself through a miserable marriage to a military man and failed farmer, to Ellen Moger, whose letter to her parents told of the death of three of her four young children from starvation on the journey out, women wrote to keep in touch with their old lives and to make some kind of private sense of the new. Yet all would have agreed with Annie Baxter when, after being bled with a penkife, she wrote to a friend, "Oh! ye nervous ladies, never come to the bush!"" 284p. illus bibliography. Tsiolkas, Christos
The Slap
At a suburban barbecue, a man slaps a child who is not his own. This event has a shocking ricochet effect on a group of people, mostly friends, who are directly or indirectly influenced by the event. In this remarkable novel, Christos Tsiolkas turns his unflinching and all-seeing eye on to that which connects us all: the modern family and domestic life in the twenty-first century. The Slap is told from the points of view of eight people who were present at the barbecue. The slap and its consequences force them all to question their own families and the way they live, their expectations, beliefs and desires. What unfolds is a powerful, haunting novel about love, sex and marriage, parenting and children, and the fury and intensity - all the passions and conflicting beliefs - that family can arouse. Book

Papaellinas, George
Ikons : A Collection of Stories
"Even after thirty years the Mavromatis family cannot understand their life in Australia. Until Peter Mavromatis's first exhibition as an "ethnic" photographer clarifies everything. In this collection of stories we follow the family fortunes. Old YiaYia had already lived her life in the old country. Christois and Elli wage a private war as confused as the motives which brought them from Cyprus. For Peter, their Austalian born son and proud hope for the future, life is a contest of shallow cultural identities and allegiances. Ikons is a vivid and contentious portrayal of a family united only by society's view of them as outsiders" 198p. Remainder mark, else near fine. Book

Loch, Sydney [De Vries, Susanna & De Vries, Jake]
To Hell and Back: The Banned Account of Gallipoli [The Straights Impregnable]
Banned in 1916, "The Straights Impregnable" . the 'best book on Gallipoli' now returns to print. As a young soldier in the battlefields of Gallipoli, Sydney Loch witnessed the horror of war first hand. His journal of what he saw became a book on his return to Australia. Hoping to avoid military censorship, his publishers dubbed Sydney's book a novel: 'The Straits Impregnable'. But as the war ground on and numbers of casualties grew, the publisher inserted a note saying the book was in fact true. 'The Straits Impregnable', which had enjoyed huge literary acclaim, was immediately withdrawn from sale by the censors. Sydney Loch's experiences in the war, shaped his life afterwards. With his wife, Joice Loch, he would go on to work in refugee camps in Poland and Palestine, at the Amerian Farm School in Thessaloniki and finally at Ouranopolis near Mt.Atho. In 'To Hell and Back', historians Susanna and Jake de Vries have recovered and edited Sydney's book for a new generation of readers - and written a biography of his remarkable life. 248p. illus. index Book
