It had no native inhabitants and the first convicts were sent there in 1788. The island was abandoned by 1814 but reopened for the worst criminals from 1825 for another 30 years. Its unique character and distinctive personality developed from the arrival of the Pitcairners descendants of the Bounty mutineers in 1856.
