‎HMT 'Orontes'. Saturday August 10th 1918. Final Reunion of South Australians under the auspices of the Literary and Debating Societies of 2nd General Reinforcements 'S' UK and South Australian Reinforcements AAMC . cover title‎

‎At Sea: The Societies as above 1918. Very Good. At Sea The Societies as above 10 August 1918. Duodecimo 172 x 107 mm 4 pages a bifolium last page blank comprising the title page and the toast list-cum-programme on the two centre pages. The leaflet is folded horizontally with a few light creases elsewhere and occasional light foxing; overall in very good condition. Not surprisingly we can find no record of this most ephemeral item. 'Pte C. Spencer Smith' is written at the head of the first page. The service record of 55891 Cecil Spencer Smith courtesy of the invaluable National Archives of Australia website indicates that he hailed from the Adelaide suburb of Hindmarsh enlisted on 8 February 1918 'Embarked for Active Service . HMAT "Orontes" Sydney 5-6-18 Disembarked Liverpool 11-8-18'. This Final Reunion must have been quite a party; all nine entertainments listed on the programme are preceded by a toast. This might be related somewise to the instruction printed at the foot of the first page: 'Guests are requested to bring the Lid of their Mess Tin with them'. The Societies, as above] unknown‎

‎Testimonial‎

‎A decorative testimonial printed in purple ink on cream silk external dimensions 480 x 325 mm presented 'To William Markham Esq. M.D. Port Augusta S.A. January 31 1887'‎

‎The first hospital in Port Augusta 'was built in 1873 with Dr William Markham as the first Medical Superintendent; he served the community until 1897' Port Augusta City Council website. This testimonial was presented to Dr Markham prior to his departure on 'a well-earned holiday trip to the Old World . Apart from professional services and considerations we feel that you have earned our gratitude by your constant and untiring efforts for the moral and intellectual advancement as well as the physical well-being of the people of Port Augusta. But while taking a marked interest in religious affairs your zeal has never been that of a sectarian while your charity of judgment and breadth of view have secured for you the respect and esteem of all the religious organizations of the Town'. The printed signatories include members of the Town Council Hospital Board and Institute Committee. Apart from a few light and inoffensive stains and slight marginal loss near the top left-hand corner well clear of the printed area this unique and quintessentially ephemeral item is in very good condition. unknown‎

‎FISHER Sir James Hurtle‎

‎An almost-lifesize vintage portrait photograph of Sir James Hurtle Fisher 1790-1875 'one of the most important pioneers of South Australia' 'Australian Dictionary of Biography'‎

‎The very fine portrait visible image size 545 395 mm in its original ornate gilt frame external dimensions 740 595 mm is exquisitely hand-painted and signed by the famous colonial photographer Townsend Duryea 1823-1888. His original label is affixed to the paper backing on the verso of the frame 'T. Duryea Artist Photographer 66 and 68 King William Street Adelaide' and in our opinion he has created a masterpiece as both artist and photographer with this work. James Hurtle Fisher commenced practice as a solicitor in London in 1816 and 'was drawn into the colonizing movement in 1835. He was selected as resident commissioner one of the most important offices under the South Australian Act . second only to the governor'. Fisher 'left England in July 1836 with the governor's party in the "Buffalo" arriving on 28 December 1836 at Holdfast Bay where the official oaths were administered a proclamation was read and a ceremony marked the beginning of settlement. In January 1837 Fisher erected his reed hut and Land Office near the survey camp of Colonel William Light at the north-western corner of the new capital site; the destruction of these temporary buildings by fire on 23 January 1839 caused both men serious loss. Fisher had been allowed to draft his own instructions which were not shown to Governor Sir John Hindmarsh. Disputes between the two men over their respective powers had begun on the voyage and were soon revived in the new Council of Government and more violently outside and led in February 1837 to the Resident Magistrate's Court binding the participants over to keep the peace towards each other. The new governor George Gawler was appointed both governor and resident commissioner a radical departure from the principles on which the colony had been founded' ADB. Fisher returned to his profession and became a leader of the South Australian Bar. In October 1840 he was elected first mayor of Adelaide; in 1860 he became the first resident South Australian to be knighted. Townsend Duryea was at the King William Street address from 1858 until his illustrious career as a photographer 'was cut short when his studio and entire collection of 50000 negatives were destroyed by fire on 18 April 1875' ADB. We suggest as a date for this magnificent portrait 'circa 1870'. unknown‎

‎LIGHT Colonel William‎

‎A View of the Country and the Temporary Erections near the Site for the Proposed Town of Adelaide in South Australia‎

‎An original hand-coloured aquatint image size 365 545 mm sheet size 523 685 mm after a painting by William Light; discoloured tape stains near the edge of the top and side margins well away from the printed surface a legacy of having been framed at one stage; in excellent condition. The original plate was engraved by Robert Havell and published in London by Smith Elder and Co. in 1838. The subtitle states that it is 'Forming the First of a Series of Views of that Colony now preparing for Publication'. This is certainly the best-known of them. The 1928 Francis Edwards catalogue 'Australasia Old and New' states in item 6 that the original plate for this view had recently been found and that prints have been produced from it. There is little doubt that this is one of these 1920s restrikes from the original plate with later colouring. Carroll 7. unknown‎

‎BOETTGER Otto 1842 1907 Adelaide optician and instrument maker‎

‎Two very detailed manuscript ledgers from Boettger's practice as an optician 1886-1894 together with approximately 275 invoices covering importations for his extensive engineering surveying optical and scientific instruments business 1892-1900‎

‎The foolscap folio ledgers are uniformly bound in half suede and cloth with the letters A and B respectively on the spines; the covers show signs of wear but the volumes are very sturdy with the contents in excellent condition. The first one contains 21 pages of index and 102 pages of the ledger proper. Each page is designed to record the details of nine patients; the last entry is numbered 916. The data are the name of the patient often the address the date of the consultation the referring doctor the prescription for the lens for each eye and more often than not specific details of the spectacle lenses or frames. Examples of the latter include 'pale blue periscopic lenses / gold frame / twisted curled sides'; 'Gold Pince-nez Canadian'; 'pantoscopic frame'; and 'Extra small Children's frame made to order'. The first entry is dated 20 October 1886. Initially business was not brisk; the fifth entry was not for another eleven weeks on 7 January 1887 when no less an individual than William Austin Horn presented himself. By the time this volume ends on 15 July 1892 a host of still-familiar Adelaide family names had made an appearance: Verco Goyder Hawker Hack Fowler Woods Bagshaw Magarey Jury Mead Rischbeith Morphett . The second volume is more of the same: there are 39 pages of index 298 pages of the ledger proper with each page containing details of seven patients approximately 2086 individual records. This volume commences on 16 July 1892 the day after the first volume ends and the last page is reached on 19 December 1894. The invoices are chronologically arranged in a contemporary quarter cloth and marbled papered boards post-binder; both covers are detached with minor signs of use and age and there are some chipped edges to the contents but overall it is a fascinating collection of unique records documenting a highly specialised profession in colonial Australia. An obituary of Otto Boettger 1842-1907 appeared in 'The Chronicle' Saturday 7 September 1907: 'The death occurred at Cologne recently of Mr. Otto Boettger the well-known Adelaide optician and instrument-maker. The deceased who was 65 years of age was born in Elberfeldt Germany and came out to Australia in 1877. He had previously conducted a large business in St. Petersburg but the venture not proving successful he determined to emigrate to Adelaide. His first engagement was with Mr. Dobbie Alexander Williamson Dobbie 1843-1912 a successful local engineer and inventor cleaning old keys and repairing machinery. Starting in business for himself his great knowledge of surveying and engineering instruments led the Government to place all their work in this department in his hands and the results proved eminently satisfactory. About 10 years ago the business in Flinders-street was transferred to Mr. G.C. Kohler who was an apprentice of Mr. Boettger's at one time and had been with him nearly 30 years. Mr. and Mrs. Boettger then returned to Germany to spend the remainder of their lives in retirement'. Another local newspaper 'The Register' records details of an overseas trip Boettger made in 1894. He left Adelaide for Europe on 11 April 1894 see the report of the Valedictory Dinner on 2 April in the newspaper the following day. His return is reported on 13 December: 'Among the passengers who returned to Adelaide by the German mail steamer "Habsburg" on Wednesday was Herr Otto Boettger the well-known optician and maker of scientific instruments. He went to Europe for the purpose of seeing what is at present being done in the large cities in optical matters and returns in very good health. To a representative of the "Register" who saw Herr Boettger on board the mail steamer he gave a few particulars of his enquiries. "You must know" he began "that until the last few years it was not possible to get made to order astigmatic lenses either here or in any of the other colonies. I am glad to say that the plan I had followed is in all essential points the same as I have seen in the best optical workshops in London Berlin Paris and Birmingham. The difference is merely in the speed because in these large centres there is so much to be done. I was glad to find that in the matter of accuracy of curve and perfection of finish the lenses turned out in Adelaide are not inferior to any I have seen. There has been considerable advance made in the construction of all sorts of scientific instruments and I have been much interested in examining all the latest improvements'. hardcover‎

‎Adelaide: Paris Nesbit to Number 15 then John Newton Wood 1900. First Edition. Hardcover. Adelaide Paris Nesbit to Number 15 then John Newton Wood 1900 and 1901. Foolscap folio 242 pages. Each issue drop-title as issued in contemporary flush-cut cloth-backed papered boards; cloth renewed; boards lightly worn at the extremities and a little marked; the contents are in fine condition. Number 32 the first one in Volume 2 is a different format - shorter and wider - and the leading margins are folded back 40 mm. 'The small religious newspaper "Morning" was founded in 1900 by the gifted but unbalanced lawyer Paris Nesbit. The newspaper was initially used largely as a vehicle for his personal views on religion and Adelaide society. Nesbit unashamedly stated that the newspaper was his own voice and would be run "as Christ would if He were subject to the present limitations of my faculties" . Nesbit and his family - in particular his sister Agnes Benham - were interested in the "new thought" movement of the 1890s with its socialism and sexual reform. Early issues of the newspaper contained items commenting on Nesbit's short stint in the Parkside Mental Asylum in 1898 which he felt had been politically motivated by his enemies including the premier Charles Kingston. Kingston as well as other political and church leaders were criticised in early issues of the newspaper as were various Adelaide lawyers. Nesbit felt particularly strongly about religious hypocrisy. Benham contributed book reviews and periodic articles mostly on religious topics during the early life of "Morning". Much attention was given by various contributors many writing under pseudonyms to Benham and Nesbit's views that ideal marriage relationships were based on intellectual and spiritual connection. After just four months Nesbit handed over the editorship of the newspaper to the printer John Newton Wood who steered the newspaper towards an interest in spiritualism and vegetarianism' SA Memory online. The final issue appeared in 1909. Paris Nesbit (to Number 15), then John Newton Wood hardcover‎
