The first editions of much-reprinted works on the rights and duties of women. The first volume addresses virginity the second adultery and the contents are drawn in the main from classical and theological writings with each volume containing an index of sources. With the armorial bookplate of John Walter Tyas 1833-1903 linguist bibliophile and university registrar; the following details of his interesting life are gleaned from the Australian Dictionary of Biography. After studying law and working on the staff of 'The Times' he emigrated to South Australia in 1868. After a period in business in Adelaide he was active in the pearl-shell industry on the north coast of Australia and beyond for three years. In 1873 he returned to England and for some years 'roved the Continent collecting bric-�-brac pieces of art and books on antiquity. In 1878 he was appointed Reuter's agent in Adelaide arriving there on 18 September and in 1882 became registrar of the University of Adelaide. Tyas also acted as examiner in modern languages especially in French. A natural conversationalist and an entertaining host he was envied for his library and his knowledge of literature'.
