An albumen paper cabinet photograph image size approximately 150x100mm laid down on the blind-stamped card of H. Parker Rolfe of Philadelphia; it dates from the short visit to America made on the homeward journey of the 1896 Australian touring team to England
It is a posed outdoor shot of the batsman at the crease; it is inscribed 'yours sincerely' and signed in ink in the bottom right-hand corner of the image. The surface of the image is slightly scuffed and the mount has a trifling surface chip; overall it is in excellent condition. Joe Darling 'was one of Australia's finest batsmen and Test captains'; he was captain in 21 of his 34 Test matches. This was his first of four successive tours of England; on each of them he scored over 1000 runs usually as an opener. He was captain of the last three tours which included the Ashes-winning 1899 and 1902 sides; under his captaincy in England his teams played 107 first-class matches losing only eight. A detached autograph album leaf 165 � 200 mm signed in pencil by the Australian team for the First Test against South Africa in Brisbane 5-10 December 1952
The signatures are Hassett Captain Benaud 12th man Harvey Hole Ian Johnson Bill Johnston Langley Lindwall McDonald Miller Morris and Ring. A heavyweight team by any account with eight former Invincibles and five future Australian Captains. On the verso are the pencil signatures of the Victorian team for the match against Queensland in Brisbane 16-20 January 1953 SSM 444. The signatures are Hassett Captain Chambers Fitchett 12th man Harvey Hill Ian Johnson Bill Johnston Loxton Colin McDonald Ian McDonald Ring and Thoms. Six of the team played with the Invincibles; in fact only Chambers Fitchett and Ian McDonald were not capped for Australia although Thoms and Hill played in only one and three Tests respectively. Victoria won by seven wickets with Johnston collecting ten wickets. unknown

Original blind-decorated cloth with the ticket of the binder Corbett on the front pastedown; cloth a little mottled; spine sunned; edges and first and last few leaves a little foxed with light scattered foxing elsewhere; tiny tear to the map near the stub; a very good copy. An Australia-wide survey in which the author pulls no punches. He expresses special indebtedness to the work of E.M. Curr 'although some of the latter's conclusions have been widely different from those enunciated in this essay'. This volume also contains STEPHENS Edward: The Aborigines of Australia being Personal Recollections of those Tribes which once inhabited the Adelaide Plains of South Australia 27 pages and WYNDHAM W.T.: The Aborigines of Australia 7 pages. The other 17 articles are on a variety of subjects of interest ranging from 'Flying Machine Memoranda' by Lawrence Hargreaves 5 pages plus 8 illustrations all but two of them full-page to 'Irrigation in its Relation to the Pastoral Industry of New South Wales' by H.G.
