PARLIAMENT OF SOUTH AUSTRALIA FINNISS Boyle Travers
Petition of B.T. Finniss. To the Honourable House of Assembly.
Adelaide: Government printer 1866. Very good condition. Foolscap folio tinted 6 pp. stamp of the Clare Institute. Official publication of the petition presented to parliament by Boyle Travers Finniss defending charges of incompetence of command and misallocation of public funds. Following the decision to place the Northern Territory under South Australian jurisdiction in 1863 Finniss was appointed resident and embarked on the project of establishing a settlement at Adam Bay. A surveyor by profession Finniss had previously worked with Colonel William Light in laying out the city of Adelaide. The Adam Bay site appeared sound in the dry season but quickly became unworkable in the monsoon. Conflict with local Aborigines and interpersonal rifts with the settlers ended Finniss' role in the North; he was ultimately recalled and reprimanded by a Royal Commission for the loss of £40000. This petition refutes the claims of incompetence levied against Finniss by several settlers by this stage the proceedings had become acrimonious and Finniss assumed much of the blame for the failed settlement. Ordered to be printed by parliament 28th September 1866. Government printer unknown

Perth: Government Printer. 1902. Folio 62 pp. with a large folding lithographic map measuring 890 x 648 mm. an excellent copy half crimson morocco with gilt lettering by Sangorski. Official account of the scientific expedition financed by the wealthy English traveller Albert Calvert dispatched 'for the purpose of exploring the remaining blanks of Australia'. Lawrence Allen Wells 1883-1932 was an Australian born surveyor who rose to prominence for continuing the work of the Elder Scientific Expedition after it collapsed under the leadership of David Lindsay. Accurate and understated Wells won the esteem of the Adelaide scientific community and attracted the attention of Albert Calvert who insisted that Wells lead his expedition. Accompanied by his cousin Charles Wells and other scientific companions the Calvert Expedition of 1896 passed through the Murchison goldfields and headed north to the Fitzroy River. At Midway Well the party split intending to meet at Joanna Spring some 300 kilometres to the north. The first group led by Wells' cousin perished in the attempt. Unable to locate Joanna Spring incorrectly mapped by 30 kilometres to the east by Warburton some years earlier the second group barely survived an incomprehensible 13 day march of some 220 kilometres over sand hills with no water before reaching the safety of Noonkanbah station on the Fitzroy River. INTERCOLONIAL MEDICAL CONGRESS OF AUSTRALIA STIRLING Edward C.
Address in Surgery
Melbourne: Stillwell & Co. 1889. Octavo 23 pp. some foxing old fold and manuscript postal address and postmarks 1889 where the pamphlet has been mailed from South Australia to New South Wales; in the original printed wrappers rather spotted and wornink stain to head of front wrapper. Unusual offprint rare and not listed in Ferguson. This lecture by Edward C. Stirling Surgeon to the Adelaide Hospital and lecturer at the University of Adelaide "Is Surgery a Science" is printed from the Intercolonial Medical Congress of Australasia Transactions from their second session in Melbourne January 1889. Stirling was born in 1848 at Strathalbyn South Australia. Educated at Cambridge and sometime lecturer at St George's Hospital London he returned to South Australia in 1875. He had a long and varied career which included a stint as the member for North Adelaide a crossing of the continent from south to north with the Earl of Kintore in 1891 and work as the medical officer and anthropologist with the important William Horn expedition in 1894. A long note in the Australian Dictionary of Biography shows the breadth of his interests: he was actively associated with the Public Library the Art Gallery the Zoological Society the Adelaide Hospital and the State Children's Council dean of the Faculty of Medicine in 1908-19 and president of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals in South Australia. He participated in the long struggle to secure Flinders Chase on Kangaroo Island as a sanctuary. In 1917 Stirling was knighted; he died two years later. Attractively the work was considered of such interest that one "J. von Düring" has sent the pamphlet through the Australian posts to "E. Chisholm" M.D. of Victoria Street in Ashfield New South Wales. Hence the old fold running lengthwise along the book as well as the address details and various postmarks to the back wrapper: two are sadly illegible but the third is still clear: "Southern Railway S.A. Au 22 89". Although various copies of the Transactions proper are held this offprint is not in Ferguson and not known to have been acquired by any Australian institutions since. Interestingly several other offprints from the same Melbourne congress of 1889 and also printed by Stillwell are known: Jamieson On want of proportion in the signs and symptoms of diseases of the heart and great vessels; Marano On pneumatic therapeutics by means of the portable apparatus; Grant A Case of Raynaud's Disease. Stillwell & Co. unknown

SOUTH AUSTRALIA
Secondary Towns Association formed for the purchasing of one or more special survey or surveys of land in South Australia for Sites for Secondary Towns
London: J. C. Hailes 1843. Octavo three folding plans ALS to Thomas Burrows 1841 loosely inserted ALS to John Burrows 1872 tipped in contemporary ink notations on two of the folding plans and rear endpapers noting country and town acres ownership signature of John Burrows 1855; very good in the original brown cloth gilt crudely lettered to spine colonial bookplate of Charles R.J. Glover. A remarkable copy of this rare book on the second phase of South Australian settlement sent to prospective settlers the Burrows family and with associated material relating to their land speculations tipped in. The land holdings they took up are marked on two of the more detailed maps and there is also an 1841 letter from a strong proponent of the various Wakefield schemes Daniel Riddiford having the 'pleasure to advise you of having made the selection of your two Town acres also one country section' in New Zealand. The book with its three fine maps is rare in its own right - Ferguson agreed with an early bookseller's note that it was "exceedingly scarce" - but to have a copy with such remarkable provenance is very exciting as a glimpse into how the early settlers were kept apprised of their prospects not least because the Burrows family were evidently getting involved in some rather complicated empire building. On the 'Plan of the Two special surveys on the River Light' there are a series of manuscript notes relating to J. Burrows and Jane Burrows his wife. Similarly the 'Plan of the Special Survey on the River Murray' has notes relating to John Burrows. Also tipped in at the end is an 1872 letter from one James Walsh to Burrows regarding lots in the "township of Victoria". The back endpapers are covered in notes and clippings relating to land allotments. The letter from Daniel Riddiford is particularly striking. Riddiford 1814-1875 was an enthusiastic proponent of Wakefield colonisation schemes who emigrated to Wellington New Zealand in 1840 as agent in the New Zealand Company: 'His duties were to receive immigrants on landing and to provide temporary habitation particularly for women and children and any sick' Encyclopedia of New Zealand. The letter is addressed to Thomas Burrows evidently the patriarch of the family and therefore provides a substantive glimpse into how the early Wakefield schemes worked noting his purchase of town lots 367 and 435 and no. 44 on the Hutt River valley "the land in this place is rich the timber fine.". The note also comments that Burrows' second country selection can not yet be made because the land is not ready. J. C. Hailes unknown

London: Chappell 50 New Bond Street 1854. Margins browned disbound with early stitch-sewing still largely intact. Sheet music 8 pp. and colour-lithograph cover. A racy tune by the dance composer Charles d'Albert 1809-1886 this rare early sheet music features a particularly appealing coloured lithograph of the clipper Lightning a vessel designed for the Australia trade and famous for making many fast passages in the mid-1850s. Built by Donald McKay of Boston for James Baines of the "Black Ball Line" out of Liverpool the Lightning was as the name suggests perilously quick and has since been called an "extreme clipper": in 1854 the ship made the passage from London to Melbourne in very quick time under the demanding Captain "Bully" Forbes infamous for running with the lee rail under water. Powerfully constructed with concave bows Lightning had a good full midsection with tumblehome making her fast yet stable with good sail-carrying ability. The ship was also lavishly decorated to entice wealthy passages to brave the passage to Australia. After some fifteen years on the Australia trade Lightning was lost on 30 October 1869 at anchor in Geelong when a fire broke out on board. The shoals on which the clipper was ultimately scuttled became known as the "Lightning Shoals". Although not dated it is fair to assume that the music would have been composed in the hey-day of the clipper's fame. A copy is recorded in the collection of the National Library. Chappell, 50 New Bond Street unknown
