Biography of Alexander Harris who wrote one of the most informative books about New South Wales during the years 1826-1840 but it was less forthcoming about his own antecedents. Scouting Australia Frankston Victoria 1935. First Edition. Hardcover Original Cloth. Very Poor. The text is illustrated with black and white photographs advertisements cartoons and back and white illustrations. 1/4 dark green cloth covered backstrip. 3/4 pale green coloured boards with dark green coloured titles and illustration to the front panel. During the dates of December 28th 1934 and January 5th 1935 the Australian Boy Scouts had an international Scouting Jamboree in Frankston Victoria. During that time they printed a daily "newspaper" to commemorate and to celebrate this occasion -- this book is the compilation of this "newspaper". This was the first Boy Scout Jamboree to be held in Australasia and as such Lord Baden Powell and Lady Powell were in attendance. The book is in really really bad shape and words almost fail help to describe it. The corners are bumped and rubbed to the point where the underlying board is visible and the sharp "right angle" corner of the corners has been lost and are now rounded. Both the head and heel of spine are ragged bumped frayed and generally in disrepair and there is splitting and rubbing of the cloth the full length of the spine. There is general discolouration and and staining to the panels along with a red ink mark on the front panel. The internal pages have been printed on newspaper quality paper and consequently it is starting to crumble at the edges and to brown. During the years 1846 to 1850 the survey ship H. M. S. Rattlesnake surveyed the the northern shores of Australia and New Guinea. In that time the ship explored the inner passage of the Great Barrier Reef rescued a young Scottish woman from Aboriginal capture of 5 years and explored the islands of Torres Strait and other works of surveying. Both panels of the dustwrapper have grubby marks. The author of the book grew up in Sydney in the 1890s. Her mother was of French extraction and thought by many of the day to be eccentric. Browning of the papers has occurred and a few handling marks are also present. Photographic dustwrapper showing a black-and-white still from the Rank Organisation film of the same name against a blue coloured background with white and black coloured titles to the front panel and black coloured titles to the spine. On the back panel a small portrait photographs of the actors of the film -- Maureen Swanston Peter Finch Ronald Lewis Jill Ireland David McCallum and Ursula Finlay. Grubby marks and fading to the dustwrapper particularly the spine and top left-hand corner of the front panel. Chipping to the head and to the heel of the spine and a little creasing to the rest of the dustwrapper edges. Remains of tape can be seen to the fold over panels. To the verso of the dustwrapper there has been some bleeding of the book colour. A few foxing spots are also present. An early novel written about the Australian goldrush and bushranging. Illustrated dustwrapper same illustrations as used for boards. Black writing on front panel. The dustwrapper is very rubbed and faded. There is chipping to all four corners and there is chipping to the head and heel of spine both areas missing .25 "of top and bottom edge. There is rubbing along spine and edges and there is insect activity noticeable on back panel which has gone through to the board in some areas and along the back fold over. The dustwrapper has grubby marks is darkened due to sun damage. On front fold over there is previous owners name in pen at top. Throughout the text maps and illustrations done by George Caley and black and white frontispiece of a kookaburra. Green boards with gilt writing on the spine. Illustrated dustwrapper showing the same kookaburra as the frontispiece green background with black & white writing on front panel and on the spine. John Currey has edited the letters of George Caley to Sir Joseph Banks. These letters ranged from descriptions of new specimens found and of explorations undertaken. Caley also reported on life in the struggling colony under Governor King then Bligh to give the reader an understanding of ten eventful years that Caley witnessed from when he arrived in 1800. The corners are slightly rubbed and there are some bumps along the bottom edge. On the front paste down there is a booksellers sticker and on the ffep. there is previous owners name.
