Volume II is in similar condition but panel two of spine has its left half chipped away affecting the title and the leather of panel five is missing entirely resulting in 1½" chip showing the underlying binding. The 1827 text uses an elaborate fictional frame story about the Seymour family and friends to teach about conducting experiments and examining scientific principles via "the common toys which have been invented for the amusement of youth" p. 25 including the thaumatrope or wonder turner a spinning-disk optical illusion serving as an early form of animation and often considered a part of cinematic history. The second of several Japanese-set novels by this author a British diplomat and Foreign Office official who spent most of the 1920s stationed in Asia and per Wikipedia "was a significant influence on the British foreign policy in the Far East in the early 20th century." Per the jacket blurb both his first two books the previous one was "Kimono" were "bitterly assailed by sentimental orientalists who allege that the coldly realistic picture Mr. Paris paints of Japanese life is libellous but it is significant that Far-Eastern English journals have been unanimously enthusiastic about Mr. Paris's accuracy and insight." The book concerns a young English priest who marries a Japanese woman. It should be noted that the book is unrelated to the later novel of the same name by James Michener which was adapted for a Hollywood movie in 1957 even though the two books share the theme of interracial romance. . First plate lightly age- toned. Some very minor scattered foxing else bright and clean internally. Very good. A volume of engravings depicting the voyage of the ship Bellone and seafaring life. Following the "title" plate which is numbered 21 are scenes of Africa primarily in Senegal. These plates depict the natives villages and cities. After the scenes of Africa are plates depicting maritime life evidently on a French naval vessel in the Atlantic. These images are much more delicately engraved and are not numbered. The first few of these detail a "day in the life" of a sailor from morning muster and breakfast through scrubbing the deck and inspection and shore leave. Two plates of Uruguay and two unidentified landscapes are also inexplicably inserted in the midst of this sequence. An interesting and perhaps unique compilation of travel and maritime images. hardcover books

The Abbreviato Chronicorum Angliae begins with the marriage of Ethelred in 1002 ending in 1252 with a continuation in another monk's hand to 1255. This history is an abridged version of the Historia Anglorum but with alterations and insertions containing new matter or giving the opinion of the author. The catalogue of the collection of books and antiquities of Pierre-Adrien Pâris; the greatest professional library of the early 19th century. He bequeathed it to the city of Besançon. It contained a number of the essential books on architecture about 1500 manuscript architectural designs by Pâris and paintings and drawings by Fragonard Boucher and Saint-Aubin. Pâris 1745-1819 was architect to Louis XVI designer of the royal cabinet and directed royal festivities at Versailles Marly and Trianon. The collection reflects his deep appreciation for the classical architecture of Greece and Rome where he journeyed several times. During these trips he sketched buildings and artifacts found at Pompeii Herculaneum Paestum and other sites which along with other drawings compose the 1500 architectural designs described here. These experiences prepared him to serve as director of the Académie de France in Rome under Napoleon where he was responsible for excavations at the Colosseum. The library has considerable sections on architecture history the arts of antiquity etc. The first 40 pages provide a biographical sketch of Pâris. Pages 1-146 enumerate 777 lots of books. Pages 147-222 contain a description of his cabinet 509 lots. The book concludes with an index of authors and artists. The engravings depict bronzes terra cotta sculptures marble statues and other unique items in the collection. Nice copy apart from the foxing. From the library of Bernard H.
