Helga Paris was born in 1938 into the chaotic landscape of Germany just before the onset of the Second World War. She was still a child when the conflict forced her family to leave their home and settle in a small city just south of Berlin. With her mother and sister at home with her and her father and two brothers still at war Paris found herself within the familial environment of a large and welcoming community of women. As the Cold War ensued Paris emerged as one of the foremost photographic chroniclers of everyday life in the German Democratic Republic GDR. Her first book Gesichter: Frauen in der DRR Faces: Women in the GDR is a purposeful and intimate series of portraits of East Germans in their quotidian spaces.
