France 1325. No Binding. Very Good. Vellum leaf 175 x 120 mm; 14 lines of Gothic textura script; illuminated initials. A fine illuminated leaf from a French Book of Hours written on sturdy well-prepared vellum in a clear and disciplined Gothic textura typical of Parisian production in the early 14th century. France (Paris), ca. 1250-1280
Medieval Manuscript Leaf - Hugh of St-Cher's Concordance Paris University Bible
France 1250. No Binding. Very Good. Vellum Leaf 160 x 111 mm. Latin text in a fine Gothic textura hand 46 lines arranged in triple columns. A well-preserved and elegantly produced reference leaf from a Concordantia Hugonis the groundbreaking biblical concordance compiled by the Dominican scholar Hugh of St-Cher for the University of Paris during the second quarter of the 13th century. This reference tool was revolutionary in organizing the text of the Vulgate Scriptures alphabetically to enable rapid scholarly consultation. The present leaf belongs to the "C" section listing lemma-words followed by abbreviated biblical location references. Professionally written on high quality Parisian vellum with numerous two-line initials in alternating red and blue each embelled with delicate pen-flourishing extending into the margins. Capitals touched in red throughout. The script is small brisk and highly abbreviated typical of Paris workship production for portable "Pocket Bibles" and their scholarly apparatus. Leaves from Hugh's concordance are significantly scarcer than standard Bible leaves reflecting its much more limited circulation to Dominican study houses and university scholars. A desirable example of a pivotal work in the development of biblical indexing. Vellum sound and supple text and decoration crisp. Moderate marginal toning a short tear at right margin minor original flaws to skin and light handling marks all consistant with use as a working reference tool. Overall very good. Ships unmatted and unframed <br/> <br/> unknown
