‎"Das an La Rochefoucauld geschulte, in anschaulichem und klassischem Stil abgefaßte Werk erreichte noch im Erscheinungsjahr drei Auflagen. Von einer Auflage zur anderen fügte La B. neue Portraits, Maximes und Réflexions hinzu; in die achte Auflage nahm er auch die anläßlich seiner Wahl in die Académie Francaise gehaltene Rede auf. Diese letzte Ausgabe seines Lebens enthielt statt der anfänglichen 386 Charaktere schließlich 1118, hinter denen man zeitgenössische Personen der höheren Gesellschaft suchte und gefunden zu haben glaubte. An den Anfang seines Werkes stellte er eine Übersetzung des Theophrast, um dann athenische und zeitgenössische Sitten mit scharfer Satire und Groll gegen den Hof zu vergleichen" (Bautz, BBKL IV, 919). - Ex-library copy with usual marks (stamps / inventory marks on a few pages). - Cover rubbed and stained.
