In 1935 Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s niece Leila Roosevelt Denis and her husband Armand Denis embarked on a journey across Africa in a Dodge car starting in Belgium driving across France and Spain to Spanish Morocco and then driving the full length of the continent southward. Leila Roosevelt had previously driven 24000 miles around the world in 1933-34. The trip was made with Dodge trucks carrying cameras and Dodge cars. “Wheels Across Africa†is a record of that trip released by Dodge as a promotion in 1936. T.Armand Georges Denis 2 December 1896 – 15 April 1971 was a Belgian-born documentary filmmaker. After several decades of pioneering work in filming and presenting the ethnology and wildlife of remote parts of Africa and Asia he became best known in Britain as the director and co-presenter of natural history programmes on television in the 1950s and 1960s with his second wife Michaela.Denis married André Roosevelt’s daughter Leila 1906-1976 who was fourteeen years younger than him; they went on to have four children Rene David Armand & Heidi Ann. Portrait of Valentin A. Gubitchev at the time of his spy trial with Judith Coplon. Original photograph.
New York: 1949. Silver print. French text on separate sheet pasted to verso. Photographer's stamp verso. 18 x 13 cm.Mr. Gubitchev and Miss Coplon were arrested by agents of the Federal Bureau of Investigation who clearly identified themselves to Mr. Gubitchev and Miss Coplon. The agents escorted Mr. Gubitchev to the New York office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation in the United States Courthouse on Foley Square.Upon his arrival at the New York office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation Mr. Gubitchev was searched fingerprinted and photographed. There after at 11:00 p. m. he was advised that it was desired to question him concerning his connection with Judith Coplon and his activities on the night of March 4 1949. He was told that he was not required to answer any question that he was entitled to obtain an attorney to represent him and advised that if he did make any statements those statements could be used against him in a court of law. Mr. Gubitchev was then questioned until 2: 37 a. m. March 5. During this period a list was prepared in his presence of the personal property in his possession at the time of his arrest. He verified the correctness of this list but refused to affix his signature thereto. The preparation of this list necessarily took up a considerable portion ofthe time between 11:00 p. m. and 2:37 a. m. The interview was further interrupted by recess at 1:30 a. m. at which time Mr. Gubitchev was given refreshment. From 2:37 a. m. on March 5 until 11:00 a. m. March 5 when he was arraigned in Federal Court Mr. Gubitchev was not questioned. During this time he appeared twice before Federal Judge Simon Rifkind at 4:48 a. m. and again at 6:36 a. m. On each of these occasions because Mr. Gubitchev was not represented by counsel the arraignment was deferred by Judge Rifkind in order to give Mr. Gubitchev the opportunity to secure counsel. Portrait of Eugene Dennis national chairman of the Communist party in 1949 with his wife being sentenced to 5 years in prison. Original photograph.
New York: 1949. Silver print. French text on separate sheet pasted to verso. Photographer's stamp verso. 13 x 18cm.NYT February 1 1961:Eugene Dennis national chairman of the Communist party in the United States died yesterday of cancer in Mount Sinai Hospital. He was 56 years old. His home was at 626 West 151st Street. Mr. Dennis was general secretary of the Communist party in this country from its peak period in 1945 when it numbered about 80000 members to its decline in 1957 when the membership was about 20000. It is now believed to be fewer than 10000. In 1957 Mr. Dennis became the party's secretary of national affairs and a member of its executive committee. He was named national chairman in December 1959. The party had been split by factionalism after the Soviet Union's show of force in Hungary in 1956. He supported Russian action to quell the Hungarian uprising but advocated greater party independence from Moscow dictation. He led middle-of-the-roaders opposing William Z. Foster then national chairman who demanded continued allegiance to Russia. When in 1957 the party received a letter from Jacques Duclos top French Communist chiding it for "dangerous" tendencies and urging solidarity with Soviet foreign policy Mr. Dennis said: “Our decisions will be our own.â€.In 1956 he said the party had lost its influence and became politically isolated by policies too far to the left. He wrote an article for The Daily Worker asking whether Premier Khrushchev of the Soviet Union and his colleagues could not have done something to restrain Stalin's terror. He thus took a considerably more moderate position than Mr. Foster a stanch Stalinist.Mr. Dennis invoked the Fifth Amendment in an appearance in February 1957 before the Senate Internal Security subcommittee in Washington and refused to testify.Mr. Dennis had been a member of the party since 1926. In 1949 he was convicted under the Smith Act as one of the eleven "first-string" Communists tried in Federal Court here for conspiracy to teach and advocate the overthrow of the Government by force and violence. Judge Harold R. Medina who presided at the nine-month trial sentenced him to five years in prison. Higher courts upheld the sentence and the Communist leader served three years and nine months in Atlanta Penitentiary from July 22 1951 to March 1 1955 receiving time off for good behavior New York: 1949 unknown

Portrait of Judith Coplon being arrested for spying with the Soviet Valentin A. Gubitchev . Original photograph.
New York: March 15 1949. Silver print. French text on separate sheet pasted to verso. Photographer's stamp verso. 18 x 13 cm.Judith Coplon had pleaded innocent to a charge of espionage. The 27 year old former Justice Department analyst was arraigned before Federal Judge Richmond Keech who fixed bail at $100000 and set April 25 1949 as the date for her trial.NYTBy Sam RobertsMarch 1 2011:Judith Socolov who as a diminutive Barnard graduate named Judith Coplon was convicted of espionage more than 60 years ago after embracing a utopian vision of communism and falling in love with a Soviet agent died Saturday in Manhattan. She was 89.Her death was confirmed by her daughter Emily Socolov. A longtime Brooklyn resident the elder Ms. Socolov had been living in the Bronx.Judith Coplon was a 5-foot-tall 27-year-old political analyst for the Justice Department when she was arrested by the F.B.I. in 1949 with the Soviet agent Valentin A. Gubitchev on a Manhattan street corner. She had been identified from intercepted Soviet cables. But her convictions for espionage in 1949 and for conspiracy with Mr. Gubitchev in 1950 were overturned — in one case because federal agents overheard conversations with her lawyer and in the other because she was arrested on probable cause but without a warrant. Mr. Sympathie de Kiki Juin 1931â€. to Francis Dickie good friend in memory of our old Montparnasse. Illustrated with photographs and paintings by Man Ray Kisling Tsuguharu Foujita Per Krohg Hermine David etc. and paintings by Kiki. A lightly toned copy with some aging edge wear and faint spotting to the edges of the first few pages. This is the memoir of Alice Prin 1901 - 1953 better known as Kiki of Montparnasse a French model chanteuse memoirist and painter during the Jazz Age. She flourished in and helped define the liberated culture of Paris during the so-called Annees folles crazy years. She became one of the most famous models of the 20th century and in the history of avant-garde art. In 1921 she met the American visual artist Man Ray with whom she had a stormy eight-year relationship during which time she became his muse as well as the subject of some of his best known images including the surrealist image Le Violon d’Ingress and Noire et blanche Black and White. A painter in her own right Kiki had a sold-out exhibition of her paintings in 1927 at the Galerie au Sacre Printemps in Paris. Long after her death she remains the embodiment of the outspokenness audacity and creativity that marked the interwar period of life in Montparnasse. Very scarce. Edite Par Henri Broca unknown
