The Historia Anglorum was written in 1250 compiled by Paris from his greater work a world history but including additional information. The history begins with William the Conqueror and concludes in 1253 during the reign of Henry III. The Abbreviato Chronicorum Angliae begins with the marriage of Ethelred in 1002 ending in 1252 with a continuation in another monk's hand to 1255. This history is an abridged version of the Historia Anglorum but with alterations and insertions containing new matter or giving the opinion of the author. The catalogue of the collection of books and antiquities of Pierre-Adrien Pâris; the greatest professional library of the early 19th century. He bequeathed it to the city of Besançon. It contained a number of the essential books on architecture about 1500 manuscript architectural designs by Pâris and paintings and drawings by Fragonard Boucher and Saint-Aubin. Pâris 1745-1819 was architect to Louis XVI designer of the royal cabinet and directed royal festivities at Versailles Marly and Trianon. The collection reflects his deep appreciation for the classical architecture of Greece and Rome where he journeyed several times. During these trips he sketched buildings and artifacts found at Pompeii Herculaneum Paestum and other sites which along with other drawings compose the 1500 architectural designs described here. These experiences prepared him to serve as director of the Académie de France in Rome under Napoleon where he was responsible for excavations at the Colosseum. The library has considerable sections on architecture history the arts of antiquity etc. The first 40 pages provide a biographical sketch of Pâris. Pages 1-146 enumerate 777 lots of books. Pages 147-222 contain a description of his cabinet 509 lots. The book concludes with an index of authors and artists. The engravings depict bronzes terra cotta sculptures marble statues and other unique items in the collection. Nice copy apart from the foxing. From the library of Bernard H. Paris 1800-1881 medievalist Conservateur at the Bibliothèque royale and later the first professor of medieval French literature at the Collège de France conceived the work not as a simple inventory but as a history of the manuscripts themselves. 1750. Paris Mondhare c.1750-1780. Original hand-coloured copper engraved vue d'optique. Plate Size: 38.7 cm x 23.2 cm. Sheet Size: 44.7 cm x 28. 6 cm Original print. In very good actually remarkable condition. Clean and crisp and radiant impression with only the faintest trace of browning. Some very minor traces of light staining to outer margin corner. A wonderful vue d'optique from 18th Century France. A beautiful original hand-coloured copperplate engraving that shows a view the Porte Saint-Antoine which was one of the gates of Paris. The Porte of Sainte Antoine was located and protected by the Bastille. This engraving captures a more peaceable atmosphere of Parisian life around that notorious landmark: finely-dressed people and family groups are shown out strolling along the tree-lined broad boulevard and off to the side along the more sheltered promenade. It is a busy scene: In the foreground under the shade of a tree a religious beggar seeks alms; nearby an unbusy street vendor is shown with a table of offered refreshments; a dog is shown possibly bounding after one of the wheels of the passing horse-drawn carriages in a time-honoured dangerous tradition; off to the side a crowd of spectators view ball games. Louis-Joseph Mondhare 1734 - 1799 was a Paris print engraver publisher and print dealer. Originally from Normandy Mondhare began publishing in Paris around 1760 and started to print prints bearing the address of the hotel de Saumur rue Saint-Jacques. From 1784 he established a partnership for 12 years with his son-in-law Pierre Jean. Wikipedia From about 1740 to about 1820 optical prints also called "vue optique" or "vue d'optique" prints were made to be viewed through a Zograscope or other devices of convex lens and mirror all of which produced optical illusion of depth. Intaglio optical prints have exaggerated converging lines and bright hand-colours which contribute to the illusion of depth. Typically the legends of optical prints have reversed words along the top edge as those would be seen though the scope but words on the bottom of the prints are normal. Wikipedia unknown
