Contemporary half calf and marbled paper boards edges red-sprinkled worming at lower front cover corners bumped; ribbon marker detached.<br /> <br /> Only Edition of a collection of vignettes intended to convey the flavor of Parisian bourgeois life during the last year of the first French republic. <br /> <br /> The “editor†uses the trope of the observations of a provincial visitor to Paris whose notes he acquired in a card game as scaffolding for 54 short chapters on Parisian fashion shops pastimes construction projects food and drink and gossip along with some anecdotes and allegorical tales. Described are Frascati’s the famous Italian cafe with gardens Tivoli the magasins de nouveautés of the Palais Royal candy shops confiseurs bookshops music shops perfumeries bath houses gardens for balls Bastringue Paphos Rugéri and others theaters Franconi’s equestrian amphitheatre the Cirque Olympique and of course the cafes and restaurants which had recovered by this time from the Revolutionary recession were always full and were then as now the chosen venue of business deals and seductions. Commenting on the latest best-sellers in a chapter on la Librairie the author notes that the gothic fad is thankfully over but that it has been replaced with sentimental novels; he sniffs at the craze for travel narrations and books for children both no sooner published than sold out but praises the Voyage of Denon and Levaillant’s Oiseaux d’Afrique and those Parisian printers and publishers known throughout Europe: Didot Crapelet Cramer etc. He objects to publishers’ habit of advertising their wares at the ends of books . but a two-page catalogue concludes this edition. <br /> <br /> A chapter on vocabulary is a reminder that word-policing is nothing new and that fashions shift unpredictably: instead of a couturière one was now supposed to call an assistant seamstress in a garment shop an ouvrière en linges or en modes; a cobbler was no longer a cordonnier but was now a bottier and a hairdresser a “stylist†would shave your head if you called him a perruquier rather than a coeffeur. The word “magasin†was “outlawed forever." <br /> <br /> What was In in post-Revolutionary Paris as at any other time was soon to be out a fact not lost on the author who added this motto to the title: “La mode fuit saisissons la†Fashion flees grab her.<br /> <br /> This copy collates 16 -1/1 2-186. The odd pagination points to an absent half-title Tourneux and the BnF catalogue provide only a summary pagination for the BnF copy.<br /> <br /> OCLC locates only the BnF copy; Lacombe also listed one at the Musée Carnavelet. Harry Crosby the nephew of banker/financier J.P. Morgan died in 1929 at the age of 31 in a double suicide pact in a New York hotel with one of his mistresses. What brought this priviledged Bostonian to such an abrupt end is not so eay to explain. When America officially entered the First World War he volunteered with the U.S. Army Ambulance Corps. It was during the the Battle of Orme that an artillery shell exploded next to him killing everyone nearby but sparing Harry. From that point on he was obsessed with death and the brilliance of the sun. He moved to Paris int he early 20s living the bohemian life with his fellow expatriates indulging himself in all of the taboos as if to challenge death to take him. These diaries record his fascination with travel exotic intoxicants open marriage and above all--death. Near fine copy with just a trace of rubbing to the lettering at the spine without dust jacket. Elliot Paul was one of the noted American Paris expatriates of the 1920s co-editor of Transition magazine and knew all the notables of the period. Of the flowering of writing that came out of 1920s Paris Paul is the only American to write a lengthy memoir of what it was like to interact and immerse oneself in the people of his Paris neighborhood. This book is basically the story of the lives of the people of the street on which he lived the Rue de la Huchette. Paul lived there for the better part of 18 years until the Nazi occupation of France prevented his return. A genuine classic. Random House unknown books

A photographic record of a young American man's tour of Europe and the Paris Exposition accompanied by many beautiful street images of Paris.<br /> <br /> The silver gelatin prints of Paris by the unidentified photographer include wonderful images of Notre Dame cathedral the Eiffel Tower the Opera House Toreador Palace the Church of the Madeleine the Champs Esys and the Arc de Triumph. There are many street scenes including the Rue de Rival L'Avenue de loper Place de la Republic monuments and architecture.<br /> <br /> The tour begins in Scotland and includes a departure at the train station wonderful shot of the train and passengers waiting on the platform as well as thatched roof cottages and gardens castles Edinburgh and London. It concludes with images of the main square in Brussels the Belgian country side and Holland including the iconic windmill shot. The final shot is on board ship the photographer with 2 fellow travelers looking very proud of himself.<br /> <br /> The album 8 x 6". Images 3 x 3 1/2" loosely inserted into card stock mounts. A lovely wooden game made for the 1889 Exposition Universelle in Paris containing a construction game illustrating six important buildings of the exhibition: Pavilion des Beaux-Arts; Palais de Trocadero; Ministére de la Guerre; Maison Égyptienne; Panorama Transatlantique and Fellah une Rue au Caire lacking one piece at top. A rare and wonderful 1889 Paris Exposition Universelle game with fifty-three of fifty-four original wooden blocks color chromo-lithographed on upper panels. All contained in the original red paper covered wooden box with the dark red cardboard box lid printed in gold and decoratively bordered in various colors. Near fine.<br/><br/>A very rare original game of the famous 1889 World's Exhibition in Paris which celebrated the 100th anniversary of the storming of the Bastille an event considered symbolic of the beginning of the French Revolution. The fair included a reconstruction of the Bastille and its surrounding neighborhood but with the interior courtyard covered with a blue ceiling decorated with fleur-de-lys and used as a ball room and gathering place.<br/><br/>The main symbol of the Fair was the Eiffel Tower which served as the entrance arch to the Fair. Since the lifts had not been completed when the Exposition opened the first visitors had to walk up to the second floor platform. Workers had worked through the night the day before the exhibition opened to complete the necessary construction needed to safely allow patrons to set foot upon the structure. When speaking of the dedicated workers M. Salles the son-in-law of Eiffel made the statement that "no soldier on the battle field deserved better mention than these humble toilers who will never go down in history. unknown books
