Full blue calf with gilt spine rules/lettering in compartments gilt board rules and inner dentelles. 560pp 31pp 23pp 56pp pictorial ads. All edges gilt. Illustrations marbled endpapers sewn-in red/green/yellow page marker. Near fine. Spine only faintly shellacked a turn-of-the-century practice with hand-lettered paper shelf label near foot. Exceptionally handsome tight first edition of this detailed guide to American participation of this world's fair to end all world's fairs held in Paris between 12 April and 12 November 1900. Like all world's fairs its intention was to celebrate mankind's accomplishments and advances in every field imaginable -- but with the debut of the new century it was felt appropriate to celebrate accomplishments of the preceding century as well. This remarkable copy bears a red-bordered 4½" X 3/4" colophon slip typed in blue tipped to an inner flyleaf noting that "Twenty-five copies of this catalogue have been bound in this form for special distribution. This copy is numbered 11." Recipients of this specially-bound edition were likely important politicos of the day. The name of this special recipient has been giltstamped on the front board: "WILLIAM B. ALLISON SENATOR." From the collection of William B. Allison 1829-1908 the powerful Iowa Republican who as U.S. senator from that state 1873-1908 was one of the "big four" who controlled the Senate; as chairman of the Senate Appropriations Committee for most of those years he championed tariff legislation and co-authored the Bland-Allison Act of 1878; as member of the Senate Finance Committee he was often courted by U.S. presidents to hold cabinet positions. Early 20th century bookplate on front pastedown notes "This book is part of Allison Memorial Collection Gift of Mrs. Jennie A. Brayton" and until deaccessioned was part of Allison's non-circulating collection at his hometown public library across the street from his Dubuque residence. According to Leland L. Sage in his 1956 biography "William Boyd Allison: A Study in Practical Politics" Allison owned "hundreds of books on government economics history banking finance and the tariff as well as volumes of American and English literature. An omnivorous reader Allison doubtless read most of these volumes if only for relaxation from the strain that accompanied his efforts to solve the many problems facing the Nation. Alexander Hamilton was his guidepost in finance Robert Burns his favorite poet and 'The Cotter's Saturday Night' his favorite poem." Rehabilitated by Napoleon Pâris d’Illins died as a general of the infantry during the Spanish campaigns at Cocana in 1809. Paris: Pissot & Gogue 1763.<br/> <br/> An important sale catalogue of the library of the Maison Professe des Jesuites of Paris founded in 1580. This library was comprised of many donations the most notable being that of Pierre Daniel Huet 1630-1721 bishop of Avranches and scholar. Huet whose scholarship was very well-known made considerable scientific researches as well as classical studies; he edited the famous Delphin series of the Latin classics in about sixty volumes. Huet formed a great library of books and MSS. which he donated to this Jesuit house upon his death. <br/> <br/> When the Jesuits were expelled from France in 1762 the entire library of the house was offered for sale by auction. However Huet’s books were withdrawn before the sale due to the terms of his donation and were given by his heir to the Royal Library in 1765. <br/> <br/> This was one of the best and most complete Jesuit libraries in France. It numbered 30000 volumes in 1754 this sale catalogue has 7252 lots. It must be noted that this catalogue gives us the best idea of the contents of Huet’s rich collection. <br/> <br/> Fine and handsome copy. This copy is unusually complete: it has the two unnumbered pages following the preliminary leaves “Livres en Feuilles†and the 59-page author index. Poster with manuscript text and portrait drawing at the center printed on salmon-colored wove stock in offset lithography. 580 x 400 mm. 22 7/8 x 15 5/8 inches. 2 cancelled taxe daffichage stamps affixed at blank portion at lower left as usual. The extremely rare graphically riveting poster for one of the most radical exhibitions in postwar France Dubuffets art brut portraits of Parisian intellectuals at the Galerie René Drouin in 1948. Initially the series was based on personalities in the literary salon of Florence Gould to which Dubuffet had been introduced by Jean Paulhan including Paulhan himself Pierre Benoit Marcel Jouhandeau and Paul Léautaud; it was then extended to include other friends and acquaintances such as Antonin Artaud Francis Ponge Henri Michaux and Jean Fautrier. Dubuffets aggressive graffiti-style caricatural portraits of 1946-47 are in part caricature in the simplest sense a mocking variant on the pantheons of artists that had become sober clichés of even radical French art as in Surrealist group portraits. But Dubuffets portraits manifest the revolt and revulsion of intellectuals: mental energy and will are now all that matter and the body can indeed must. go to hell. His writers and intellectuals are pathetic monsters their features reduced to pop-eyed scrawls their aplomb prodded into jumping-jack spasms. Yet since grotesque harshness and imbalanced disturbance are in Dubuffets view tokens of authenticity to be portrayed by him with scar-like contours and inept anatomy is perversely to be made glamorous High and Low. A few indetectible very short clean marginal tears mended on verso; a bright unfolded copy.</p> Paris, 1947.

The invitation to the gala held at the Opera de Monte-Carlo on the occasion of the Fete Nationale is to be held on Friday November 19th 1976 "Par ordre de Leurs Altesses Serenissimes l'Aide de Camp a l'honneur d'informer Monsieur et Madame Hugues Gall qu'ils seront invites a la soiree de gala. en l'honneuyr de Leurs Altesses Serenissimes le Prince Rainier III et la Princesse de Monaco." In 12° (13,8x7,5 cm); (2), XII, 329, (5) pp. Legatura coeva in piena pelle con filettatura a secco ai piatti e titolo e fregi in oro al dorso (piccole mancanze di pelle agli angoli dei piatti e qualche leggera storfinatura), Finalini e testatine ornate. Prima edizione di questo raro lavoro del grande storico ed archeologo francese Jeacques Antoine Dulaure. Prima di iniziare la sua carriera letteraria, Dulaure si dedicò prima all'architettura e poi alla topografia. I suoi primi scritti furono opere di storia locale nei quali l’autore analizzava la storia di diversi monumenti di Parigi. In seguito pubblicò diverse opere che tradivano il suo odio per gli abusi, l'ingiustizia e le false dottrine dell’Ancien Régime. Sotto forma di guide di Parigi riusciva a criticare la monarchia ed il sistema monarchico. Allo scoppio della Rivoluzione Francese abbracciò con entusiasmo lo spirito rivoluzionario e occupò diverse cariche pubbliche. Dopo la restaurazione finì in disgrazia e si mantenne solo grazie al suo talento di scrittore. L’opera qui presentata è una raccolta di curiosità parigine attraverso le quali, nel suo stile, l’autore pone l’accento sul morente regime monarchico criticandone gli eccessi passati e presenti. Opera non comune e all’interno in buone condizioni di conservazione.

LA QUINZAINE ANGLOISE A PARIS; OU L'ART DE S'Y RUINER EN PEU DE TEMS.
Ouvrage posthume du docteur Stearne, traduit de l'Anglois oar un Observateur. Ma non è di Stearne; l' autore Rutledge usa una parodia dello stile di Stearne. Un volume in 12° di XVI-287 pagine. Legatura i mezza pelle coeva molto MALANDATA con dorso praticamente mancante (consigliabile una nuova legatura). --- Jean-Jacques (James) Rutlidge, irlandese, giornalista, autore tra l'altro di un pamphlet contro Necker, divenne poi durante la Rivoluzione un fervente hebertista. "La Quinzaine anglaise à Paris, ou l'art de s'y ruiner en peu de temps se veut l'histoire d'un jeune et riche lord anglais venu s'initier aux charmes de la vie parisienne et que de subtils aigrefins mèneront rapidement à la ruine et à la prison pour dettes. L'auteur nous conduit à la fois dans le beau monde faisandé de l'époque, dans les salons des grandes cocottes et dans l'atelier de J.-B. Greuze, le peintre de la vertu. Paris est vu et dénoncé comme le lieu du paraître et de la perversion. Mais Rutlidge est aussi un témoin attentif, des salles de jeu comme des premières courses de chevaux. L'histoire de Milord est celle d'une chute que précipitent sa candeur et sa vanité, sa curiosité mêlée de gêne et son érotisme d'adolescent qui s'éveille à l'amour, qu'il ne découvre que tarifé. Rutlidge a voulu écrire une oeuvre morale à l'intention des visiteurs anglais. Il a écrit aussi ce qui ressemble plutôt à l'ébauche d'un roman balzacien" (dalla presentazione dell'edizione moderna Champion) -- Quinzaine .. is an amusing satirical work by James (or Jean Jacques) Rutledge which was published without attribution to him, first printing in 1776. DNB's article on Rutledge says: "this sketch, which depicts the rapidity with which a 'plunger' may be reduced to destitution by the harpies of Paris, and purports to be a posthumous work by Sterne, to whose works it bears no sort of resemblance, was translatedf as the Englishman's Fortnight in Paris, by An Observer, Dublin, 1771."

Nouveau Plan de Paris
Paris: Librairie Hachette n.y. Hardcover. Folio 32½" X 27½" color map that folds down into 12mo hard case light green and blue cloth with dark green lettering into front of which is bound 16mo 48pp printed text. Near fine/near fine. Hard case is slightly age toned; bright map with a number of small discreet archival strengthening all on verso at folds. Superb later printing of this glorious cased map first published in 1867. Eiffel Tower is clearly marked so this undated printing is post-1889 and likely turn of the century. The roughly-circular city is machine colored in tan; the River Seine all parks and woods as well as major roads are all in light green; all train routes and important buildings are in bold red. Small legend in upper left corner identifies "Signes Conventionnels" while another at lower left is titled "Paris Divise par Arrondissements et par Quartiers" and small map numbers all 20 arrondissements as they spiral from center outwards. The text bound into the front of the case is titled "List Alphabétique des Rues de Paris" and is a detailed street directory that also identifies important structures hospitals schools etc. Quite an attractive copy.
