Paris: Librairie d'Art Ludovic Baschet. 1880. Limited edition one of 10 copies printed on Japon paper this being number 9. Quarto. Handsomely bound by Ramage of London in full brown morocco with gilt fleur-de-lis devices to the corners of the boards and spine compartments and with titles in gilt to the upper board and spine. Gilt dentelles. All edges gilt. Marbled endpapers. Illustrated with 34 fine photogravure plates proof impressions produced by Goupil & Cie 64 further full-page plates and 50 in-text drawings. A very good copy the binding square and firm with a little rubbing to the spine and joints rubbing to the corners a few light scuffs to the boards and a touch of cracking to the front hinge. The contents with scattered foxing to the endpapers are otherwise clean and crisp throughout. The plates remain fresh and bright. One of a very small limitation of this extensively illustrated guide to the Paris Salon exhibition of 1880 printed on Japon paper and with wonderfully sharp proof impressions of the photogravure plates. Most concern the publication of certain books the relationship of the Faculty with several guilds and the rules concerning the autopsy of corpses.The book opens with the university reform of 1600 which added many classical authors to the curriculum. For the Faculty of Medicine this meant the official establishment of Galen as the primary authority on botanical medicines. Interest in the work of Galen was highly stimulated by new translations from the Greek that had appeared in the 16th century and by 1600 the Paris Faculty was heavily mired in the doctrines of Galen which would remain so up until the 18th century.With a few contemporary annotations and corrections. Paper somewhat browned and with a few spots. A small corner of p. 11 of the index is cut out. Pp. 17-44 of the final part appear to be missing but this seems to be the case in every edition of this text we have located. Binding worn at the extremities with the head and foot of the spine damaged and a crack in the back hinge. A good copy.l Krivatsy 12063. unknown

London: Henry Colburn and Richard Bentley 1831. New edition second edition. About very good in publisher's grayish boards with paper spine labels with some spotting and staining particularly to vol. II tear to the foot of vol. I spine boards & spines rubbed particularly to head & foot contents clean. Cruikshank George ill. Intended for children and originally composed for the author's family this three-volume work about science was first published in 1827. Originally published anonymously in later editions authorship was credited to Paris. Dedicated to the writer Maria Edgeworth it aims "to blend amusement with instruction" which Paris states Edgeworth has "satisfactorily demonstrated" in her own novels. Topics covered in volume 1 include momentum geometry elasticity and rotatory motion demonstrated using a yo-yo a jack-in-the-box and a slingshot among other toys and games. A fascinating work in science education the work seeks to prove "how profitably and agreeably the machinery of fiction may be worked for the dissemination of truth." Additionally this work is a part of the Cruikshank canon as he contributed several woodcuts.<br /> <br /> 8vo. 3 vols. Cohn 599 for first the edition. Henry Colburn and Richard Bentley unknown

Faint blotchy foxing some leaves toned occasional tiny wax spots a few very discreet paper repairs. Later approx. 1821-1860 tan calf binding by Clarke & Bedford of Frith Street their ink stamp to upper corner ffep verso spine richly gilt with raised bands; gilt centrepiece borders and dentelles to each board a.e.g. marbled endpapers. Joints slightly creased a little wear to endcaps but very good indeed. Centrepiece gilt arms of John Frederick Campbell 1st Earl Cawdor 1790-1860. Campbell married in 1816 and succeeded his father in 1821 and these arms appear to postdate both of those events. Campbell was a Fellow of the Royal Society MP for Carmarthen 1813-1821 and Lord Lieutenant of Carmarthenshire 1817-1860. Ownership inscription of J. Campbell in an old hand to blank leaf preceding title-page. A reprint of the second edition London 1570 of Matthew Paris's important historical chronicle formerly attributed to the fictional 'Matthew of Westminster' as edited by Matthew Parker. The text covering the period to 1259 is based on the author's Chronica Majora; the 1259-1307 text was compiled and composed by various writers at St. Albans and Westminster; the text from 1307 to 1325 is by Robert of Reading. Shows a view of Le Boulevard de la Madeleine in Paris one of the four 'grands boulevards' in Paris filled with horses and carriages and the corner of the Eglise de la Madeleine to the left. Photographer is noted as "X Phot" at the bottom of the print. According to the Treadwell Resource on stereo photographers X was used by E. Neurdein of Paris and Marseilles France. Neurdein operated in the 1870's through 1880's. Excellent condition and an excellent and early image of Paris. unknown

Attractive little guidebook to Paris and its monuments. Albert-Etienne Montemont was born on August 20 1788 in Rupt-sur-Moselle the son of Jean-Joseph Montemont a forest ranger and Agnes Joly. He did well in his studies at the college in Remiremont and learned German while living with a German family to whom his parents had sent him. In 1805 he joined the administration of combined duties and held various positions until 1815 in Epinal then Valence Gap Italy and again in Gap. A fervent Bonapartist he then chose to devote himself to literature; he spent time in England as a tutor and traveled to various European countries. He wrote translations tourist guides travelogues and poetry. Initiated into Freemasonry during the Empire he joined the revolutionary lodge Les Amis de la Verite in Paris in 1821 but after the Fieschi assassination attempt in 1836 he affiliated himself with the Grande Loge Centrale de Paris. He was behind the Vosges banquets in Paris in 1818. In 1830 he returned to a civil service position at the Ministry of Finance as head of the office responsible for statistical work. Albert Montemont's application to the Royal Society of Sciences of Nancy was registered on March 15 1821. Caumont was responsible for the report which he made on June 21 1821 after Montemont renewed his application and sent his new work a Voyage en Italie. Subsequently Albert Montemont who was a prolific writer proved to be a very assiduous correspondent: the works he sent are mentioned 28 times in the Table de Favier! He translated all of Walter Scott's works and wrote a 51-volume Histoire universelle des voyages. He was made a Knight of the Legion of Honor on December 11 1850. This is the 17th edition of this somewhat scarce Paris guidebook. The book is in English and has 15 plates and two folding maps. <p><em>Hand-coloured etched concertina-folding peepshow with four cut-out sections and three loose cut-outs; front-face measuring 118 × 145 mm this a little spotted and rubbed; extends by paper bellows to approximately 500 mm; modern slip-case; therefore no title label.</em></p><p>The front-face consists of a view of the Arc de Triomphe. This is separated from us by a wooden fence. On our side of the fence soldiers with their horses relax. The large peephole is in the arch of the monument. Peeping through it we look down the Champs Elysées towards the Place de la Concorde which is shown on the back-board. The Obélisque has yet to be installed there so the scene precedes 1836. On the cut-out sections civilians and military await the military procession which seems to be forming up in the distance. The military on the second cut-out stand to attention and a solitary soldier on the third section presents arms; otherwise everyone seems relaxed.</p> Hall [?] ainé, Editeur, Suceur. de Atin. Upper outer corners stained and chipped throughout first leaves with small loss. Closed tear on the title page not affecting the text. Overall in very good condition. First edition. Papered spine. ff. 14 2 blank. Sign.: A–D4 D3–4 blank. First edition of this scarce and important document of the French Wars of Religion.<p><br /> <br /> A protest against the Edict of Toleration also known as the Edict of January or Saint-Germain which was issued by the French Crown on January 17 1562 after a long series of repressive measures against the Protestant Huguenots in order to restore peace in the kingdom torn by civil and religious dissensions. <p><br /> <br /> The registration process of the edict led to the bitterest legislative struggles of the century between the Parlement and the Crown. After a vote on 7 February the Parlement very Catholic refused to verify or publish the edict and on 12 February a remonstrance the present publication was drawn up and sent to the Court. Eventually the Parlement had to capitulate and the edict was registered on March 6 five days after the Massacre of Vassy which triggered the first of the series of eight civil wars lasting some thirsty-six years in France the Wars of Religion. <p><br /> <br /> The Edict of Tolerance remained a reference for the Huguenots in the later negotiations between them and the royal power and became the foundation of the subsequent toleration edicts such as the Edict of Ambroise the resolution of the first war in 1563 and the Edict of Nantes which marked the end of the period of the French Wars of Religion in 1598.<br /> Seemingly two different editions 16- and 24-leaves were published by Lombard in 1562.
