Title translates in English as, “The Biography of Adolphe Crémieux, French Senator and President of the Alliance Israelite Universelle. ” “Adolphe Crémieux (1796 – 1880) was a French-Jewish lawyer and statesman and staunch defender of the human rights of the Jews of France…From 1834 until his death, Crémieux served as vice-president of the ‘Consistoire Central des Israélites de France’ (Central Consistory of the Jews of France) , the administrative agency for all French Jews. On 24 February 1848 he was chosen by the Republicans as a member of the provisional government, and as minister of justice he secured the decrees abolishing the death penalty for political offenses, and making the office of judge immovable. That same year he was instrumental in declaring an end to slavery in all French Colonies, for which some have called him the French Abraham Lincoln. When the conflict between the Republicans and Socialists broke out, he resigned office but continued to sit in the constituent assembly. At first he supported Louis Napoleon, but when he discovered the prince's imperial ambitions he broke with him…Crémieux did much to better the condition of the Jews. In 1827, he advocated the repeal of the More judaico, legislation stigmatizing the Jews left over from pre-revolutionary France…While in the government of the national defence, he secured full citizenship for the Jews in French-ruled Algeria, through the Crémieux Decree… The decree allowed for native Jews to become French citizens while Muslim Arabs and Berbers were excluded and remained under the second-class ‘indigenous’ status outlined in the Code de l'Indigénat... ‎Autograph diary written in pencil signed by Miss Elizabeth Woods of Bowling Green Kentucky. 135 pp. Well educated wealthy American woman's account of seeing Europe; mostly Paris France. Her Southern sensibilities were shocked at seeing a white woman at the same table with a black man. Turns out he was a minister from Haiti and the lady was his wife. Miss Woods saw the Paris Exposition several times; saw Sarah Bernhardt perform; saw President Kruger of South Africa; saw a street where Jews were not allowed to come out after 6pm; describes fancy balls and dinners; shopping for clothes.much of interest. Guiquet folded & mounted on linen stubs at gutter margin nearly all retaining their original tissue guard. Uniformly bound in full green morocco gilt fleurette borders ruled borders gilt inner dentelles raised bands & gilt decoration on spines white silk moire endpapers a.e.g. minor edgewear & rubbing some bumping & wear to corners of the Atlas vol. occasional light foxing still a VG set. First editions of this uncommon set tracing the engineering and construction efforts by Vuignier 1798-1865 noted Parisian engineer to develop and expand the warehouse docks canal locks and canal infrastructure of the Canal de l’Ourcq into the Bassin de la Villette the largest artificial lake in Paris constructed under the reign of Napoleon I. Vuigner had not only overseen the construction of the original grain warehouse docks to feed Paris with the newly created canal link but from 1839-1840 was the original general manager of the Ourcq Canal Concession who designed and oversaw the construction of the five locks connecting the Canal de l’Ourcq into the Bassin de la Villette solving the severe sloping issue. As part of the development works carried out by Napoleon III and Baron Haussmann Vuigner oversaw the upgrading of the warehouse docks along the canals connecting to the Canal de l’Ourcq in order to solve water flow and depth issues of the Pont de Flandre and the Quai de la Gironde which are depicted here in drawings as are improved pumps and mechanisms for the locks. Two of the original warehouses survived at the end of the Bassin de la Villette and later converted into artists lofts but now they have been replaced by the MK2 cinema complexes and the areas in and around the Bassin and Canals have become thriving and popular outdoor areas.
