Charles Welsh Berry
A Poetic Narrative Of 'Lochinvar'
C.W. Berry 1997. Soft cover. New/No Jacket. 5.75 X 8.0. P/B 112 pages condition is NEW. Some biographical details are no doubt essential so that blame or otherwise may be attributed to the right quarters for the contents of this book. The poet was born in a place of ill-repute! Fish Wynd - opposite the Kirkcaldy Harbour area on the 14th of May 1927 some might say an unlucky year for his mother who later had to survive his playful exploits as young boy youth and man. He was named Charles Welsh Berry. His father - also Charles - having lived in Glasgow though originally hailing from Edinburgh eventually came to rest in Kirkcaldy for the remainder of his life. His mother - Jeannie Welsh - was from nearby Dysart. Some dispute arose from the subsequent marriage causing the former to be disinherited. Was it perhaps an omen of things to come Straight from school at age fourteen he was employed in the local coal mining industry then on to various other forms of employment none of which ever daunted his spirit of egalitarianism. A staunch supporter of union activity he fought articulate principled battles in the workplace for justice and fair treatment for all. He was also an early C.N.D. campaigner and one time member of the Communist Party in Fife. Charlie or Chic to his many friends colleagues and associates adopted early on the 'nom de plume' of 'Lochinvar' from Sir Walter Scott's romantic poem of the same name using this to assault you all anonymously with his thoughts on life in penned verses through the columns of the Fife Free Press. An arbiter of a philosophical response to all life has to throw at you useful when being dealt emotionally traumatic blows! he has also always been a great projector of the jocular and the comic. These poems span a lifetime and give some insight into the nature of the man. We hope you enjoy reading them - that they may make you laugh cry think remember or in some other way be moved by them. We the filial group - Sheena Pat Roy Rona and Paul -consider ourselves privileged in seeing the dream fulfilled. Hopefully someone else will take on the next ninety odd poems! My personal thanks to Paul who gave great help and support to me during the preparation of the poems. Sheena August 1997

C.W. Berry paperback
