[Berry, Mary, ed.]
Some account of the life of Rachael Wriothesley Lady Russell by the editor of Madame du Deffand’s letters. Followed by a series of letters from Lady Russell to her husband William Lord Russell from 1672 to 1682; together with some miscellaneous letters to and from Lady Russell. To which are added eleven letters from Dorothy Sidney Countess of Sunderland to George Saville Marquis of Hallifax. In the year 1680. Published from the originals in the possession of His Grace the Duke of Devonshire
London: Longman Hurst Rees Orme and Brown Paternoster-Row; and James Ridgway Piccadilly 1819. First edition 4to pp. ciii 1 150; original brown paper-covered boards printed paper label on spine; small cracks at the bottom of the spine small wax spots on lower cover but otherwise near fine. On the upper cover is the ownership signature of Princess Starhemberg i.e. Princess Franziska Starhemberg 1787-1864. Presentation copy from the editor Mrs. Berry inscribed "To the Princess Starhemberg from her most attached grateful & affectionate friend The Editor." There is one correction in ink in the margin of p. viii also in her hand. Berry 1763-1852 was the editor of the works of Horace Walpole two dramatic plays and A Comparative View of the Social Life of England and France from the Restoration of Charles II to the French Revolution. "These letters are written with such a neglect of style and often of grammar as may disgust the admirers of well-turned periods and they contain such frequent repetitions of homely tenderness as may shock the sentimental readers of the present days. But they evince the enjoyment of happiness built on such rational foundations and so truly appreciated by its possessors as too seldom occurs in the history of the human heart. They are impressed too with the marks of a cheerful mind a social spirit and every indication of a character prepared as well to enjoy the sunshine as to meet the storms of life" Berry p. xix. Lowndes p. III 2155. Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme, and Brown, Paternoster-Row; and James Ridgway, Piccadilly unknown

[California Gold Rush – Economic History] Berry, William
1849 Letter Discussing the “California feaver†and State of the Economy in Brooklyn
Brooklyn New York 1849. Single four-page letter measuring 7 ¼ x 9 ¾ inches. Folded with a few small holes but entirely legible. Excellent. A letter from William Berry in Brooklyn to his brother James Berry in Adrian Michigan written in May of 1849. He opens with some comments about the California gold rush:

“I have recovered from the California feaver as well as many others around me. indeed the excitement is almost dead and there is very few leaving for that country. Wm. Rogerson was here lately and he said he had read a letter direct from Cala. from a mutual acquaintance who went out with 19 others when the excitement first began. they had been there two months when the letter was written which said that the average amount of their earnings collectively was from 8 to 12 Ounces per week not for each individual but the wholeâ€.

Of course by this point California’s gold rush had barely begun. Berry then comments on its effects on the economy back home:

“there is a slight tendancy to speculate in real estate at present and if we should have returns of Gold from Cala. to the amount that some expect it is thought . speculation will be as high as in 37. I doubt that howeaver it has not been dead long enough and it will take some time to replace the capital sent out there the want of which has been sevearly felt here this spring I have not yet started business for myself in consequence of the stringency of the mony market and an arangement entered into last year with the Firm for 2 dollars a day and a share of the proffits .â€.

Speculation was a factor in the Panic of 1837 and recovery from the crisis was thanks at least in part to the California gold rush. Berry was in the oilcloth business which he describes to his brother; given the use of the waterproof material in outdoor equipment one might think he would have higher hopes for the impact of the gold rush at least on his own business.

Of interest to historians of the early California gold rush and its impact on the economy back east. unknown

[Design Binding] [Fox, Gabrielle] Allen, James Lane, with commentary by Wendell Berry
The Cumberlands: Excerpts from Articles on the Region
Monterey KY: Larkspur Press 2006. Full Leather. Fine binding. Octavo. 4 36 4 pp. Limited edition number 9 of 75 copies on Somerset Book paper there was also an edition of 500 regular copies. Signed by by Wendell Berry at the colophon; additionally noted by Fox the year it was bound. In full goatskin binding with a series of leather onlays tooled in gold and blind all creating a fantastic pictorial binding. Accompanying the binding is a fine paper portfolio with publisher's prospectuses samples and associated material; additionally some templates related to Fox's binding. All housed a custom clamshell by Fox.

The text offers a lens into the 19th century view of how a native of region assesses the value of the natural wonders. Berry's commentary at the end of Allen's text brings the troubling viewpoint into a modern context: "The chapter is built upon a division of mind which in our time has become terrifying but which Allen believed to be no more than a simple equation. On the one hand in a sentimentally romantic fashion he was sensitive to the natural life of the area which was then still intact. And on the other hand he seems eager for the destruction of this virgin bounty that so inspired him. I say 'the destruction' and not 'the use' for his language is patently that of an exploiter intent upon 'conquering' nature." A sobering volume that will most surely always remain relevant.
