‎Chronicon Carionis Latine expositum et auctum multis & ueteribus & recentibus Historijs,.....in Descriptionibus Regnorum et Gentium Antiquarum, et Narrationibus Rerum Ecclesiasticarum et Politicarum, Grecarum, Romanarum, Germnicarum et Aliarum ---- Melanchthon was born "Phillip Schwarzerdt," child of Georg and Barbara Schwarzerdt. In his day, it was common among scholars to Latinize or Greekize a name. "Schwarze Erde" (black earth) became in Greek: "Melan chthon." Melanchthon was a classicist and theologian and played a role in the Reformation, alongside people like Luther and Calvin. He was an educator at heart and one of the founders of modern education in Europe. He founded schools, designed curricula and training, and renewed education in Germany in numerous ways. He built a strongly humanist-oriented school system in the Lutheran world. Because of this fact, he was also called "the Educator of Germany"(Praeceptor Germaniae). The Groningen chronicler Abel Eppens was a student of Melanchthon. In 1530, he drafted the 28 points of the Confessio Augustana, which became the creed of all Lutherans in Germany. It was imposed by the Lutheran princes on their subjects, so that after the religious peace of Augsburg in 1555, one can speak of a single German Lutheran community. Two museums are dedicated to Melanchthon, namely the Melanchthon House, his residence in Wittenberg, and the Melanchthon House in his birthplace of Bretten. Because of his great influence on the school system and his ideas on education, several schools have been named after him.‎

His main work was the Grand Dictionnaire Geographique Et Critique published in ten volumes between 1726 and 1739. Thanks to the munificence of his patrons, he lived at the court of Friedrich Wilhelm, Duke of Mecklenburg-Schwerin, then Francesco Farnese, Duke of Parma. He was also employed by king Philip V of Spain.‎

‎Much of the content of this had previously been published in the Journal of the Linnean Society of London and elsewhere. Had Darwin not chosen such genetically complex examples, he might have approached more nearly to an understanding of the laws of particulate inheritance. Like Cross and self fertilisation, it was too technical a work to command a large sale, and only about 2,000 copies were sold in Darwin's lifetime, and perhaps 4,000 before the end of the century. The first edition, of 1,250 copies, was issued on July 9, 1877, in a standard case, at a cost of 10s. 6d. It has thirty-two pages of inserted advertisements which are dated January or March. The second, again of 1,250 copies, appeared in July 1880 with a new preface which surveys the recent literature, and in which Darwin states that 'the text has been left as it originally appeared excepting that a few errors have been corrected'. This is then the definitive text, but in the third thousand of 1884 Francis Darwin added another preface which again brings the literature up to date.‎

‎The Expression of the Emotions in Man and Animals is Charles Darwin's third major work of evolutionary theory, following On the Origin of Species (1859) and The Descent of Man, and Selection in Relation to Sex (1871). Initially intended as a chapter in Descent of Man, Expression grew in length and was published separately in 1872. Darwin explores the biological aspects of emotional behaviour and the animal origins of human characteristics like smiling and frowning, shrugging shoulders, the lifting of eyebrows in surprise, and the baring of teeth in an angry sneer.‎

‎The Malay Archipelago is a book by the English naturalist Alfred Russel Wallace which chronicles his scientific exploration, during the eight-year period 1854 to 1862, of the southern portion of the Malay Archipelago including Malaysia, Singapore, the islands of Indonesia, then known as the Dutch East Indies, and the island of New Guinea. It was published in two volumes in 1869, delayed by Wallace's ill health and the work needed to describe the many specimens he brought home. The book went through ten editions in the nineteenth century; it has been reprinted many times since, and has been translated into at least twelve languages. The book describes each island that he visited in turn, giving a detailed account of its physical and human geography, its volcanoes, and the variety of animals and plants that he found and collected. At the same time, he describes his experiences, the difficulties of travel, and the help he received from the different peoples that he met. The preface notes that he travelled over 14,000 miles and collected 125,660 natural history specimens, mostly of insects though also thousands of molluscs, birds, mammals and reptiles. The work was illustrated with engravings, based on Wallace's observations and collection, by the leading illustrators Thomas Baines, Walter Hood Fitch, John Gerrard Keulemans, E. W. Robinson, Joseph Wolf and T. W. Wood.‎
