1943 DIARY OF DEAN YOUNG A YOUNG ENLISTED MORMON MAN SUFFERING DEPRESSION FROM HIS BAD MARRIAGE
Good. 1943. Fascinating diary kept by a young Mormon enlisted man from Utah or Idaho named Dean Young who spent the year Stateside in training to be an airplane mechanic. He also attempted to become an aerial gunner but failed the physical. Mr. Young made an entry every day from January 1 1943 to July 30 1943 in blue fountain pen at which point the diary abruptly stops. I think from reading it that it is the result of his depression over the precarious state of his marriage which he agonizes over on many a page. This young man had a child as well and most of his entries deal with his training KP leave movies seen music listened to mechanics classes taken attempts to get into aerial gunnery an injury to his leg that put him in the hospital for over a month and put him behind all his friends and most of all his need to get mail especially from his wife. His exasperation with his wife is apparent throughout. She doesn't write enough he misses her and his child and he is bored much of the time with training. The diary is in a five by seven inch faux-leather possibly leather covered hardback book entitled 'Dailyaide: The Silent Secretary 1943". Each page tells what he did on that day. It is an intimate look into the daily life of a young U.S. Army Air Corps recruit in the mid-war year of 1943. Sometimes sad sometimes pedestrian but very human given the backdrop of World War II. 1972 - 1978 TYPEWRITTEN TRAVEL DIARY OF AUTHOR ACADEMIC AGRARIAN AND PRESIDENT EMERITUS OF CORNELL UNIVERSITY
Japan Taiwan Outer Hebrides Saudi Arabia . Good. 1972. 3-Ring Binder. On offer are the 1972 - 1978 travel diaries of famed and noted Cornell University president Deane W. Malott. These journals are extraordinarily detailed candid and well written - filled with fascinating descriptive passages about all the places he visited. President Malott was no ordinary traveler and as such had remarkable access; a world renowned academic author editor agrarian and business executive he met dined and worked with heads of state potentates and corporate executives of the highest echelon. Sometimes he represented the IESC - International Executive Service Corps he also called it the 'Paunch Patrol'. There are many hundreds of typed pages within two 11.5 inch x 1.75 inch three-ring binders. Paginated within sections Malott and his wife Eleanor travel around the world and besides a keen eyed deluxe vision of the world there are tender personal section including copies of letters home to the family. While most of the trips are noted by country visited some of the travels are 'themed' multi-country trips as in the 'Wildflowers and Tropical Gardens' Tour or the Socialist Republics of Eastern Europe' Tour. At the beginning of Volume One there are a two 2 autograph letters mounted on thicker bond addressed to Harry W. Frantz a correspondent for United Press in Washington with compliments on his own article on the Danube. Destinations include the Alps Japan Taiwan New Zealand the Outer Hebrides and of note there is a section titled: TO THE ARAB WORLD for the INTERNATIONAL EXECUTIVE SERVICE CORPS. He meets a lot of important people and dignitaries and has a lot of candid comments about the cultures. He traveled there during Watergate and watched it on TV in the Far East and wondered why there were no American hippies in China. There is another section on the Voyage to Mayaluum on the MTS Argonaut under charter to Raymond and Whitcomb and having dinner with President Chu. The author grew up in Kansas was also assistant dean of the Harvard Business School and vice president of the Hawaiian Pineapple Company. His wife grew up in Hawaii. Deane W. Malott is revered as one of Cornell's great leaders having implemented his vision of Cornell through acquiring new buildings and facilities totaling more than 100 million dollars. Research finds that while these were prepared for publishing but they were never published at all.
