One page typescript on Frankfurter's Supreme Court letterhead the letter is dated February 1 1941 and reads 'Dear Judge McAllister: I appreciate the charm of your letter even though you response is out of all proportion to the accurate prose on my part which stimulated you to write. I hope the eventuality comes off but if it doesn't it is a source of comfort to me that you have the wisdom of not having your heart set on these things. Nothing seems to me more foolish in this world than to have the heart set on a particular job - it is bad for the heart. With cordial regards to your wife and yourself Very sincerely yours "Felix Frankfurter."' The recipient Thomas F. McAllister served as a justice on the Michigan Supreme Court from 1938 to 1941 prior to his appointment as a judge to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit by Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Typed letter signed by Supreme Court justice Felix Frankfurter. Two pages typescript on Frankfurter's Supreme Court letterhead the letter is dated November 14 1949 and reads in part "My dear Mrs. McAllister: If persuasiveness conveyed by an old and very cherished friend could enable me to hurdle the obstacles that bar my presence at the 50th Anniversary Dinner of the National Consumers League Molly Dawson's letter would have done it long ago. Please take my word for it that there are very few occasions which could possibly be so tempting as the League's Anniversary Dinner and few occasions which would have comparable drawing power to evoke utterance from me. The things that matter in this world are the things that are rooted in time and my ties to the Consumers League are pretty close to forty years old. More than that some of my most intimate friendships are related to it and all the glow and stimulus that binds people together who have shared in after all what were not important battles. Mostly I should like to come in order to let the present generation know something of the dedicated and courageous labors of John Graham Brooks and Mrs. Florence Kelley. I am not unmindful of so many other great soldiers in the common fight but Mrs. Kelley stands forth as a shining indomitable fighter who never wearied of well-doing when the going was toughest. Benjamin Franklin earned the title of "The First American" for his early and indefatigable campaigning for colonial unity initially as an author and spokesman in London for several colonies. Thick quarto bound in full contemporary calf with gilt ruling to the spine red morocco spine label lettered in gilt gilt turn-ins. With the engraved frontispiece portrait of Franklin two full page engravings one folding engraving and on folding typographical table. In very good condition. Complete with index addenda and corrigenda. Bookplate to the pastedown. A rarity in contemporary calf. "The only edition of Franklin's writings other than his scientific which was printed during his lifetime; was done with Franklin's knowledge and consent and contains an 'errata' made by him for it" Ford 342. Edited by his close friend Benjamin Vaughan and published in London while Franklin was serving as America's ambassador this seminal collection contains many of his writings on the rebellious American colonies and incendiary British measures such as the Stamp Act. Of particular interest is The Examination of Dr. Benjamin Franklin 255-301 a record of his 1766 appearance before Parliament. In Franklin's answers to the over 150 questions posed him in an afternoon of "highly charged testimony he would turn himself into the foremost spokesman for the American cause" Isaacson. J. In this lucid study of the American Reconstrution era noted historian John Hope Franklin points out many fallacies that still impede the solution of problems left by the Civil War.
