FRED ALEXANDER ROY PINEGAR
1910 ORIGINAL UNIQUE MANUSCRIPT DIARY HAND WRITTEN BY A PAIR OF ENGAGING YOUNG MEN HOBOING THEIR WAY ACROSS AMERICA GOING FROM ONE ADVENTURE AND ESCAPADE TO ANOTHER
COLORADO TO BROOKLYN BY RAIL. Good. 1910. On offer is a most unusual and utterly unique original 1910 manuscript diary detailing the adventures escapades and lifestyle of Fred Alexander and Roy Pinegar two young American men likely in their 20s who live as hobos travelling across the United States. Researchers and historians will find a trove of many first-hand accounts of unique experiences of a group of people unarguably a cultural phenomenon who existed on the fringes and in the shadows of normal life. To the Romantic this is a classic example of the 'quest theme' in literature referencing the cities and towns they wander too and through. And it is a thoroughly American experience part of the fabric of American life. Today it is a way of life that has for all intents and purposes vanished. Contrary to common opinion hobos were not simply aimless drifters. There was a hierarchy - hobos were men who travelled to find work essentially migrant workers; tramps worked if they were forced to and at the bottom of the scale were 'bums' who simply refused to work. The term originated in the western United States around 1890. The origins of the term itself are uncertain. By 1911 it was estimated that there were more than 700000 hobos travelling the railways and roads of America. The United States was experiencing a depression in 1910-11 which forced many men to travel seeking work. The life of a hobo was far from the romantic image presented in early silent movies or books. Hobos were exposed to serious risks of injury and ill-health often hungry poorly clothed and exposed to the elements. They faced violence from railway workers and distrust and hostility in many towns. This is the world that these two young men entered as they leave Denver CO heading to New York City. It is a trip full of adventures and escapades. Fred seems to be the recorder of their experiences. The ledger style journal is inscribed as found this book in Lamar Hotel Quincy IL the book had some pages both at the front and back torn out the remaining ledger pages repurposed as a journal. The pages are numbered and entry dates are noted: Left Denver on 9/19 - 10 On Cushions passenger train. Had a good time on train and arrived at Kansas City Missouri. Got a room at McGee St. ate in World Restaurant & went to Kansas City Kansas on 9/21. Staid all morning. Went to show at Empress Theatre and left K.C. on 9/22 arrived in Moberly Illinois at 1:30 P.M. Played pool and hung around the park all afternoon. Left Moberly at 8:30 P.M. on cushions . Arrived at Quincy at 12:30 P.M.on the morning of 9/23. p 21 In Quincy they seek out and find work. Fred is not happy with his 10 hour daily shifts in the steel foundry where he is working so he quits. However he can't find another job. Roy has changed jobs and as luck would have it is working in the freight yards. In nearby Fowler they have friends and family Spare time is spent hanging around with other people especially girls in local parks or downtown. They are back and forth between Fowler and Quincy where they work odd jobs. Eventually they decide to keep on moving towards family in Schenectady NY. They send their bags ahead to St. Louis and on Oct 3rd they are on their way again: Hate to leave Fowler had a good time there; the girls. Visited Uncle Fred's store in Fowler. Arrived in Quincy and it is raining like H.Got a room at 3rd and Vermont 2nd floor and took it for a week. Left our grips in the room and walked to the Post Office. Only 1 letter from the folks and from Dutch . pp 27-8 St. Louis is not as promising as it seemed and work is scarce. The work they do find is hard physical labour. In short order they are looking to move on: . came up to room. Played mouth harp and sang & talked then retired. Think we will ship our suit cases to Brooklyn Sat. afternoon unless we hear from Schenectady NY and then we will ship them to Albany. We intend to leave Saturday night. . Pin quit his job but he can't get his money til 5:00 tomorrow aft. Will keep us going some to get money and make 6:00 train .I walked over to & Palm sts to get my overalls and someone stole them. We walked back to the depot and went into yards to see how we would make the 24 hour New Yorker out of here. Think it will be easy to make but hard to get up to Engine as they don't watch it but there are so many ark lights it is awful bright. . Then took suit cases to Express Co and shipped them to Brooklyn . pp 37-9 He also notes: This book along with them his suitcases Can't write any more until we reach Brooklyn & get our suit cases out. p 39 Page 40 opens with them in Brooklyn. What Fred does is he then records his experiences from memory of the trip. And what a trip!. They hopped an east-bound train and hid in the space between the engine and baggage car - called a 'blind'. Out of town they climbed to the roof of the car and rode for 100 miles to a town called Effingham. In the yards they were caught by railroad police or 'bulls': . a railroad bull saw us and told us to come down off of there and as we would rather walk or climb down than be shot down we climbed down . p40 Over the next few hours they played a cat and mouse game with the bull including a chase through town. Eventually they eluded him and caught a night train leaving town: Ran quite a risk as it was going pretty good. . p 41 Eventually they reached Indianapolis and the train stopped with them right in front of the depot building. Eventually they were discovered: Just then a car inspector came up with a torch & saw us. I frowned at him and shook my head in a plea to not give us away. And he sure was a good fellow as he not only didn't give us away but closed the trap door and told us to close the top door. We did & were then pretty safe as the only way anyone could get in was thru the coach end. And it wasn't very likely that anyone would come thru there. Well we rode all night and the next day and rode that same train a distance of 400 miles making a total of 500 miles in one night. Not so bad eh!. p 44 On another occasion he was nearly yanked off a moving train by a pursuing 'bull' but managed to hang on and escape. Coming in to Altoona his luck changed: as the train stopped we jumped right into the arms of a Rail Road Bull. He had an awful big pistol that he stuck in our faces and said "don't you run - halt." And as we didn't want the top of our heads blew off we didn't run. Guess we could have knocked the Devil out of him if he would only put away that big smoke-wagon gun but he didn't put it away until he had us handcuffed. He took us up 2 or 3 blocks to the City jail & there he locked us up. There was a bunch of fellows in there for the same thing as we were and we sure raised the dickens. We sang & hollered all night & almost all of the next day. Until the Detective came and got us and took us up to the Alderman for a hearing. The Alderman he wanted to know where we came from and then said being as we were a long way from home he would be lenient and give us 20 days apiece in the Hollidaysberg jail or a fine of $10.00 & costs. Wasn't he kind. Well we paid the fine and the handcuffs were taken off and we were free . pp48-9 And so it goes - one adventure after another until they arrive in Brooklyn. In November of 1910 Fred and Roy both started working at General Electric. Measuring 7.5 inches by 4.5 inches this journal has 146 pages and is approximately 90% complete. The cover is intact. The first 20 pages have been torn out as well as 43 pages at the back. The remaining 146 are complete. A few of these pages have separated from the binding and are loose. All however are in good condition. The handwriting is legible.; Manuscript; 12mo - over 6" - 7" tall; KEYWORDS: HISTORY OF HOBO; HOBO'S IN AMERICA; AMERICAN RAILROADS; FRED ALEXANDER ROY PINEGAR VAGRANTS VAGRANCY RIDING THE RAILS HOPPING TRAINS BULLS MIGRANT WORKERS TRAMPS ECONOMIC TRAVELERS BUMS HOMELESS DRIFTERS DEPRESSION OF 1910 DENVER COLORADO AMERICANA HANDWRITTEN MANUSCRIPT DOCUMENT LETTER AUTOGRAPH WRITER HAND WRITTEN DOCUMENTS SIGNED LETTERS MANUSCRIPTS DIARY DIARIES JOURNALS PERSONAL HISTORY SOCIAL HISTORY HISTORICAL HOLOGRAPH WRITERS AUTOGRAPHS PERSONAL MEMOIR MEMORIAL ANTIQUIT CONTRAT VLIN DOCUMENT MANUSCRIT PAPIER ANTIKE BRIEF PERGAMENT DOKUMENT MANUSKRIPT PAPIER OGGETTO D'ANTIQUARIATO ATTO VELINA DOCUMENTO MANOSCRITTO CARTA ANTIGEDAD HECHO VITELA DOCUMENTO MANUSCRITO PAPEL . hardcover

ABOARD THE S.S. LANCASTRIA TO EUROPE. Good. 1927. On offer is a delightful original manuscript travel diary dated 1927 wherein Fred English with his wife Cora writes of his adventures and observations while aboard the S.S. Lancastria as well as his travels and adventures in England France Ireland etc. He writes of going to Blarney Castle and other castles seeing Lord Barrymore's estate and going to Killarney Dublin Brussels and many many other places! He begins: "S.S. Lancastria at Sea" - These notes are written for my own use. I am mailing them home that others may perhaps enjoy some of our pleasures. Please read them and then mail them immediately to the next on the list he then lists a lot of peoples names Don't forget that I want to use them when I return. Please see that none are lost". Here are some snippets: "Saturday August 27 1927 - Embarked at East Boston at 4:50 p.m. 10th Calvary Band playing. Bon Voyage by official representative of city. Escorted down harbor by Fire Boat playing four streams hose. Many vessels saluted with whistles. Three women and a boy failed to get off and were taken off down a ladder to a tug. It has rained all day. Have dropped pilot and are proceeding to sea. Found we were both booked together in J4 so far no sign of sea sickness. Am now waiting for dinner second sitting at 7 p.m. in to dinner at Table 3. Mr & Mrs Cain of N.Y. table companions. Enjoyed dinner five courses excellent service. Back on deck sea not rough but fog has shut down fog horn blows every minute. Watched sea and talked until 9:30 p.m. then seven times around deck equal one mile. Cora has taken a dose of Mothersill's pills as a prevention against sea sickness. Really doesn't need if no rougher than now. This day has been a big experience . It is as hot as it ever gets in Aroostook. The dining room is really too hot to eat in. We have a table stewart who tries hard to please but has a difficult time he is always in his own way . We had an impressive Memorial Service for sailors lost at sea 8 gold star mothers strewed flowers on water. We lost our table companions Mr & Mrs Cain. They moved to C deck - We had a good sing last night and a symphony concert by the ships orchestra. This morning wireless reports that Brock and Schlee had crossed the Atlantic in 23 hr. and 19 min. Had a wonderful day on deck. In the afternoon we played shuffleboard and ball on top deck. In the evening we danced a little . Now sailing directly towards Queenstown - Tonight the water has a larger swell and the ship is beginning to roll and pitch. So far the sensation is not bad. Some are beginning to feel sick again - There is to be dancing if the roll does not prevent. Saw a large school of flying fish seemed to be either white or silver color. Sometimes they take a flight of perhaps a hundred yards. There is a very jolly crowd on board who are bent on enjoying themselves - We saw schools of porpoises yesterday wish we might see a whale . We have enjoyed life on the boat. Time passes rapidly - There are two or three real characters on board. One Greenly from Boston a very fat good natural cuss from Boston. He brought aboard about 50 bottles of drink and a couple cases of oranges. He nearly missed the boat but arrived in time a dress coat over his arm part of which had been dropped in the mud. Neverless he was feeling glorious and has been ever since - Last night we sighted a passenger ship about five or six miles north sailing towards America. We have seen a number of freighters. They make the sea less lonely. - There are a small number aboard who are trying to drink the bar dry with fair success. We are in touch with land by wireless. We could radiogram home but would cost about four dollars. When we realize the expanse of ocean we feel that Lindberg had colossal nerve to attempt its passage all alone . It is fun to dance aboard except when the ship gives an extra roll the dancers go crashing into the wall or into the rail . We have the run of the ship which is worth a good deal. Our room is fairly good though small. I believe I would rather have the cheapest room aboard with run of ship than a better room say second class without run of the ship . Clancy our table steward is having a wonderful time telling us English customs. One of the cleverest jokes of last evening was a passenger who dressed as a steward. He had an English face even to that dumb look they have when they do not understand. He went into the smoking room and about the deck taking orders from many people who were not wise to the joke much to the amusement of those who were . Memorial for Lusitania in fore lounge over or nearly over spot where she sank . We arrived in Paris about 10 a.m. - After breakfast we took a train or street car to Trocadeors Convention Hedges. The parade was to start at 1:30 so we found the place were Mainse was to form. It was near Place D'lena which contains Geo Washingtons equestrian statue. While admiring the statue we noticed Hotel D'lena facing it. Then it occurred to Cora that the Mac Manuses were stopping at that hotel. We proceeded to find them. Crossing the square we heard our names called. Sure enough there they were on an iron balcony watching the parade form. We went up watched the parade form and pass until the ___ section came along then we joined and paraded. Talk about thrills. Flying could not compare. Up Rue D'Iena to the Arc dr Triomphe where we threw flowers on the unknown soldiers tomb - It was a National French Holiday declared for the occasion. The Stars and Stripes flew from the Eiffel Tower for the first time in history. It seemed millions of people lined the streets all cheering - No not all for it was reported that a few hissed. Both sides of the street were lined with soldiers with drawn bayonets. Every square had a troop of Calvalry or mounted guards. Every corner a squad of gendarmes ready to turn in any direction. It was expected that some demonstration would be made against Massachusetts but none came. There was a thrill to this parade that words cannot describe. It made me shiver and quiver. The Soldiers of a Nation parading the streets of the capital city of another cheered by its populace. One of the objects of this convention was to cement the two people together. I believe that it went a long way towards accomplishing its purpose." HISTORICAL NOTES: Originally named Tyrrhenia the S.S. Lancastria was the sister of Cameronia II of the Anchor Line which Cunard owned from 1911 until 1935. Built by Wm. Beardmore & Co. of Glasgow the Tyrrhenia was launched in 1920 and made her maiden voyage Glasgow-Quebec-Montreal on June 13 1922. She then ran from Liverpool to Canada Boston or New York until placed on the Hamburg-New York route in 1923. Refitted and renamed Lancastria during the winter of 1923-34 she then served New York from Liverpool Southampton or London until 1932 after which Lancastria was used mostly for cruising. Requisitioned for use as a troopship in 1940 Lancastria was bombed and sunk at St. Nazaire on 17 June 1940 during the evacuation of France. As many as 9000 people mostly British troops were on board. At least 3000 and perhaps as many as 5000 died in the costliest British merchant ship loss of the war. Winston Churchill felt the country's morale could not bear the burden of such terrible news and newspapers were ordered not to print the story. Survivors were forbidden under the King's Regulations to mention the disaster and people killed were listed as "missing in action". This led to the assumption by most bereaved relatives that they probably died during the bloody retreat through France. However the story of the sinking finally broke in New York newspapers on July 26 1940 and was soon afterwards taken up by the British press. The official report is still sealed until the year 2040 under the Official Secrets Act. If it could be proved that Sharpe was ordered by Ministry of Defense Officials to ignore his maximum load restriction there could be considerable grounds for compensation claims against the British Government. Currently the evidence for this remains under lock and key for another 31 years. FREDERICA De LAGUNA and MARY JANE LENZ nee DOWNS
1954 ORIGINAL AND FASCINATING TYPESCRIPT OF TWO JOURNALS AS THEY TRAVEL TO RURAL ALASKA TO STUDY THE INDIGENOUS YAKUTAT TLINGIT FROM TWO ANTHROPOLOGISTS ONE WHO IS A NEW GRADUATE STUDENT AND THE OTHER ESTABLISHED AND VERY FAMOUS IN THE FIELD
YAKUTAT ALASKA AL. Good. 1954. On offer is a fascinating original typescript of the journals of two incredibly well noted and respected anthropologists Frederica de Laguna and Mary Jane Lenz. The 154-page carbon copy dates from February 8th 1954 to April 18th of the same year when the two female anthropologists were in Alaska doing field work on the Yakutat Tlingit Indians near Juneau. The manuscript comes from the estate of Mary Lenz who was at the time a graduate assistant at Bryn Mawr where Frederica de Laguna headed the anthropology department. The journal is arranged chronologically with the entries of the two writers interleaved. De Laguna's entries take up 67 pages and run from Feb. 8 through April 1 while Mary Lenz's entries are slightly longer at 87 pages covering the period of Feb. 13 through April 18. As opposed to the actual field work and observations of the Alaskan natives the journal's focus mainly on the women's everyday activities and include many anecdotes about local events and the authors' interactions with residents colleagues and government officials. They write often of the lives of the Native Tlingit people holding on to their ancestral ways while also having to become a part of the economic system and the problems this holds. There are common stories of alcoholism of the psychosis and poor mental health of some Tlingit and of the reaction of the Tlingit to being studied by the two women. There are also some events in which the two women are not allowed to attend and must hear about it second hand from a friend in the tribe. The journal also provides a tremendous counterpoint looking at the journey through the eyes to two women in very different parts of their careers. By the time of the journal Frederica de Laguna had founded and chaired the anthropology department at Bryn Mawr College from 1938 onwards and served as vice-president of the Society for American Archaeology SAA from 1949 to 1950. She was already quite an established name in Native American Anthropology and her prestige was only growing. Mary Jane Lenz was only 24 years old at the time of this journal finishing up her Masters thesis and just beginning her career in anthropology and indigenous studies. These differences and contrasts can be easily seen throughout the journal. Especially in their observations of the surroundings Mary Lenz writes often of the cold barren environment in that part of Alaska as it is obviously much more new to her than to de Laguna who rarely comments on the weather other than to say whether it was sunny or overcast cold or warm and weather it snowed or didnt. The journals come in a three-ring binder with "MJD Diary" written on the spine. The D refers to Lenz's maiden name of Downs. Two of the spines are not touching so it can be a bit more difficult to turn the pages. The hard cover and spine have cloth over binders board. Much of the original blue color has faded. The pages within are still in good condition showing some wear near the edges and fringes and especially around the 3-hole punch in each page but there is nothing that affects the legibility or structure of the page. The typewritten words are still for the most part dark and easily readable. There are some pages where the words have faded more than others but the content can still be read easily. There pages are almost always from Mary Lenzs diary. TEXT: Juneau Monday Feb. 8 1954. F de L. Docked about 6 PM. After unpacking a bit at Juneau hotel we went down to the lobby where Mr. Gray pere introduced Mr. Weber Public Works Housing Interior Dept. down from Fairbanks. Gordon Gray U S Commissioner for Juneau came in. We discussed various things including Yakutat housing. He reports that Mrs. Annie Simmons and J B Mallott were here until about Friday. Mrs. S. had written a letter about Mallott a letter of complaint enumerating both past and present delinquencies. He went on to say that Mallott was no longer commissioner and that Jim Porter Yakutat Joe had been commissioner before but that Mrs. Simmons had run Porter and his job.Apparently they have now returned to Yakutat. We saw in the paper that Ray Smith Carl Messer and John Bremner returned from Juneau to Yakutat on Saturday. The radio reported a speech by Dr. Will Chase 80-year old Mayor of Cordova that there was a wealth of uranium in the area; Juneau Thursday Feb. 11 1954. F de L. Wanted pictures taken of some things from Yakutat. She promised to get photographer. However after lunch I borrowed tripod from Trevor Davis of the Snap Shop and tools shots myself. Photographer was there to size up job and I ordered good pictures from him. Took shots of gidjuk screen from Gau Hit of Bear Post sold 4 years ago by William Milton and of Frank Italios Thunderbird screen. The Bear post is rather short. It has a red bear with silver inlay eyes. The bear holds a little man.the gidjuk screen has the bird holding two marmots in its talons and stands on an elaborate head which represents the mt. where it hurt its wings.; Sunday February 14 1954. MJD. We woke up this morning to a stone-cold house dont know the exact temperature but there was ice on the kitchen floor and worked on the stove in the kitchen for almost an hour before it got hot enough to cook breakfast. After breakfast we went down to Mallotts to replenish our rapidly-dwindling supply of stove oil. We cleaned out the stove which was a mess -- all choked with ashes and soot.F. Frederica went down to visit with Emma Ellis while Delly and I did the dishes straightened up in the kitchen and huddled over the stove. F. came back and reported that she had had an interesting conversation with Emma who is in the process of becoming a shaman. She told us that Emma had been having dreams that her dead husband Jack would be reborn and that Emma thinks Esther Bremners new little baby girl is the reincarnation of Jim.We saw some fur seals out in the bay and we used Harrys glasses to look at them. Then Harry told F. a story about how the people of this family first learned how to fish for halibut and how they got the secret from the sea otter. I missed most of this story but F. was busily recording and I think must have gotten it all.We looked up saxsati in Boas and F. told me to read the native history of Yakutat to learn words.; 3/11/54. We stayed close to home all afternoon waiting for Annie to appear and tell us about the potlatch. But she didnt come. We dont know whether someone objected to our coming and she didnt want to tell us or whether perhaps the weather was so bad she didnt want to go out to see Charley White or whether theyd just assumed we would come anyone or whether they werent going to record songs and thought that would be our only interest in coming. Doubtless we will eventually find out what happened but it was very disappointing not to be able to go. The electricity didnt come on. It looked as if the whole native population was at the potlatch because we saw no lights in any of the houses except the Bremners. The Abrahams light came on later in the evening just as we were getting ready to go to bed. When we opened the back window the snow was so deep outside F. had to put a board across to keep it from drifting in. Bio Notes: Mary Lenz was born in 1930. As an undergraduate Mary Jane began work at Beloit College Logan Museum of Anthropology She graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Beloit in 1952 with a degree in Anthropology. In 1954 she received her Master's degree in Sociology and Anthropology from Bryn Mawr. For her Masters research she did fieldwork in the Tlingit community of Yakutat under the direction of the distinguished anthropologist Frederica de Laguna. After many years of focusing her attention on her young family and prompted by a New York Times article about the challenges facing the Museum of the American IndianHeye Foundation Mary Jane contacted Frederick J. Dockstader then director of the museum. As a result of their discussions she joined the museums staff in 1974. She was appointed director of its Archaeological Lab in 1976 and worked on materials recently excavated from Marajo Island near the mouth of the Amazon in Brazil. From 1977 onward she worked in the Curatorial Department where she helped conduct a complete inventory of the museums collections as well as assisted researchers with their work. Mary Jane was also involved in supporting early repatriation requests from the Haudenosaunee A:shiwi and Kwakwakawakw nations and in the return of sacred objects to the Omaha and Hidatsa. During this period she continued her education by taking graduate courses in Anthropology at the City University of New York. In addition to her contributions to museum publicationsincluding books for most of the exhibitions mentioned aboveMary Jane wrote for American Indian Art Magazine and served on their editorial board and published in Art & Antiquities. She died in March 2016; Frederica "Freddy" de Laguna October 3 1906 October 6 2004 was an American ethnologist anthropologist and archaeologist influential for her work on Paleoindian and Alaska Native art and archaeology in the American northwest and Alaska. She founded and chaired the anthropology department at Bryn Mawr College from 1938 to 1972 and served as vice-president of the Society for American Archaeology SAA from 1949 to 1950 and as president of the American Anthropological AssociationAAA from 1966 to 1967. She resumed her professorial duties at Bryn Mawr College after WW2 and then returned to the Northern Tlingit region of Alaska in the 1950s leading to her "comprehensive three-volume monograph.considered to be the authoritative work on the Yakutat Tlingit." de Laguna's honors include Bryn Mawr College's Lindback Award for Distinguished Teaching in 1972; her election into the National Academy of Sciences as the first woman with former classmate Margaret Mead in 1976; the Distinguished Service Award from the AAA in 1986; a potlatch from the people of Yakutat in 1996; and the Lucy Wharton Drexel Medal from the University of Pennsylvania in 1999. FREDERICK C. COULTER
1849 SUPER ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT DIARY AND SHIP'S LOG OF A YOUNG MAN AND 'SHIP'S BOY' CIRCUMNAVIGATING THE WORLD AND DESCRIBING IN DETAIL ALL HE SEES AND EXPERIENCES RIGHT OUT OF A PATRICK O'BRIAN NOVEL
Good. 1849. On offer is a rare original and superb ship's journal handwritten by a very young serving as the ship's boy from the mid-1800s. Frederick C. Coulter the author is a 'Ship's Boy' on board the sailing vessel Matilda. A ship's boy or a cabin boy is a boy in the sense of low-ranking young male employee. His job generally was to wait on the officers and passengers of a ship especially running errands for the captain. Ship's boys were usually 12-14 years old sometimes as young as 8 or 9 and also helped the cook in the ship's kitchen or galley and carried buckets of food from the galley to the forecastle where the ordinary seamen ate. They would have to run from one end of the ship to the other carrying messages and become familiar with the sails lines and ropes and the use of each in all sorts of weather. They would have to scramble up the rigging into the yards whenever the sails had to be trimmed. They would occasionally stand watch like other crewmen or act as helmsman in good weather holding the wheel to keep the ship steady on her course. Casual research did not turn up any additional information on Coulter. There have been several commercial sailing ships over the years that have borne the name Matilda. Although there are some brief references to this ship such as Recollections of a Sea Wanderers Life; George Davis; 1887 casual research has not turned up any additional information. Theodore Lewis was her Master Captain. Coulter keeps a superb record of their journey. Leaving New York Matilda sailed south around Cape Horn to Valparaiso Chile and Callao Peru then north to Monterey CA before turning east to the Sandwich Islands Hawaii Hong Kong Macao Singapore and Bombay. She sailed back to Singapore and Hong Kong then returned to New York through the China Sea Indian Ocean Cape of Good Hope and the Atlantic Ocean. The voyage was expected to take 2 years. In fact the journal covers the period October 1847 to December 1849. Matilda carried a mixed cargo of "Naval Stores and Merchandise". His log records weather ship-board living conditions tragedies floggings & discipline watch-keeping and duties and the many ships they encounter on their voyage. Signed the Ship Matilda's articles at 10 O'Clock A.M. and was towed to Quarantine Ground by the steamer United States at 4 O'Clock in the afternoon where we lay til the Monday following. .Oct 22 1847 Hard rain all day; about dusk we lost a man overboard named Johnson; the last that was seen of him he was going over the Forecastle deck into the head. He was the oldest sailor on board was of New York and had no family Oct 27 1847 . would have given anything to see Sarah Cook Mother and Elizabeth and all the rest of the folks; think of them and home very often.' Nov 8 1847 Mid-November sees them battling around Cape Horn 'It commenced blowing pretty fresh at 8 O'Clock last night. At 10 O'Clock we took in the mizzen topgallant sail squall rose at 11 O'Clock we called the watch. Double reefed the fore and main topsail stowed the topgallant sails and close reefed the mizzen topsail. We split the jib in pieces early this morning. Stowed the mainsail. Cold but fine morning. Head winds and ruff seas. Nov 16 1847 They stopped at a number of ports on their voyage and these were always well described. Coulter has a good eye for detail and a succinct manner of describing what he sees: In November 1848 Matilda arrived at Bombay. From pages 44 through 50 he describes the discharging of cargo and the taking on of new cargo. In addition to a large load of cotton her cargo included 50 chests of opium. He note the presence in harbour of the clipper ship Frolic of Baltimore. Frolic was constructed almost exclusively for the opium trade. She was lost in 1850 off the coast of California pp 44-50 His last entry is: Arrived at New York City after a passage of 149 days from Manilla and after a 24 month voyage. Dec 20 1849 A separate page details his wages as a sailor $4.00 per month less his detailed expenses leaving him with a profit of about 4 1/2 months pay. This is a superb record of a 2 year round the world cruise by a trading ship. For naval historians it paints a graphic picture of life on a working sailing ship in the heyday of the tall ships. A historian would appreciate the details about sail changes sailing directions seamanship and cargo. A geographer would appreciate the daily weather record kept and it can be an interesting comparison to weather changes occurring today. This journal would provide a rich harvest of information for a writer who wanted the ring of authenticity in their writing about the sea. The journal measures 8" x 12 1/2" in size it is leather bound with marbleized board covers it contains 119 numbered pages of daily hand written entries along with many pages of other hand written info including the ship's cargo ports of call and much more. FREDERICK HENRY ADAMS
1878 SUPER ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT RELIC OF OLD SAN FRANCISCO POLITICS AND THEATER AND LUCKY SURVIVOR OF THE CATASTROPHIC 1906 EARTHQUAKE
San Francisco California CA. Fair. 1878. On offer is a super original 1878 manuscript relic of San Francisco history being a comedy play staged in five acts handwritten by Frederick Henry Adams. Tucked in is an official Library of Congress Copyright Office Washington declaring in February 1878 that Frederick Henry Adams holds copyright. The play takes place at the original Palace Hotel in San Francisco in 1876 and is about collapse of the Comstock Lode and references many politicians of the day. The book is entirely handwritten at least 100 pages there are apart from the play proper other handwritten notes; corrections to names in the cast general observations etc. However we cannot determine of these were by Adams or perhaps a future producer director or actor of the production. While the book proper is not in the best of shape being completely dis-bound for the most part the leather covers present but very worn and detached we cannot help remind ourselves that this treasure of native San Francisco theater is a survivor of the terrible earthquake of 1906 and the massive destruction throughout the city. FREDERICK J. CHIVERS AB. A. B.
1919 - 1920 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT DIARY HANDWRITTEN BY AN ABLE BODIED SEAMAN ON AN HISTORIC CRUISE ABOARD THE FLAGSHIP OF THE MEDITERRANEAN SPEEDING TO DANGER TO ASSIST IN THE RUSSIAN CIVIL WAR AND THE EVACUATION OF SMYRNA DURING THE GRECO TURKISH WAR
HMS IRON DUKE EASTERN MEDITERRANEAN THE BLACK SEA. Fair. 1919. On offer is a fascinating significant original manuscript relic of post World War I politics strife and continuing aggression and wars being a 140 page diary handwritten by Frederick J. Chivers A.B of Coventry England who served on the famed HMS IRON DUKE during the period of 1919 to 1920 as inscribed in his own hand on the ffep. We note finding a 1914 Navy Gazette listing for a Frederick J. Chivers RMLI Royal Marines Light Infantry. If the same man we wonder at his diary notation of A.B or Able Seaman. Did he change duties after WWI We believe Chivers was also a DSM Distinguished Service Medal recipient. The storied formidable HMS IRON DUKE Flagship of the Fleet at the Battle of Jutland in World War I and during the period this diary covers the Iron Duke was still operating in historic times and in a leading role. Flagship of the Mediterranean Fleet the ship is bound for Gibraltar then Malta and eventually through the Aegean to the Black Sea through the Dardanelles in the thick of the Russian Civil War and the Greco Turkish War. Chivers writes page after page of significant reportage from a man on the deck and close to command observing Admirals and aware of the significance of orders and not merely a keen observer but also some analysis of the actions of which there are many. He records the IRON DUKE'S part in the Allied Intervention in the Russian Civil War skirmishes with the Bolsheviks the sinking of a Russian destroyer the destruction of Russian submarines interactions with various Admirals and other Royal Navy ships Russian volunteer armies etc and references to her role in the Greco-Turkish war which saw the ship take part in the evacuation of Smyrna. Chivers also details much of the Fleet actions and the Iron Duke's interactions meetings with other of His Majesty's Ship and ships of other nations. Also included is the photograph of the crew of HMS Iron Duke though it has seen better days. We can only speculate which of the crew was the author of this remarkable personal account of these significant events. The approximately 6.75" x 4.25" book has hinges that have rusted and split the spine from inside but all the pages are present a few have light pencil scribble but nothing that would affect reading.
