Rare original Mathew Brady photograph of Ulysses S. Grant. Boldly signed by Grant as the 18th President of the United States "U.S. Grant March 18th 1875." One of the earliest photographers in American history Mathew B. Brady brought home the reality of the Civil War to the American public with his innovative use of a mobile studio and darkroom to capture thousands of war scenes throughout the Civil War. Brady was also recognized as one of the premier photographic portraitists of the 19th century taking photographs of numerous celebrities including Andrew Jackson John Quincy Adams Abraham Lincoln and Robert E. Lee among others. Double matted and framed. The entire piece measures 19 inches by 16.5 inches. In near fine condition. Rare and desirable with such a strong signature signed by Grant during his presidency. Ulysses S. Grant served as president of the United States from March 4 1869 to March 4 1877. On January 29 1877 five days before he left office Grant gave an address to the Senate of the United States regarding a controversial dispute that had arisen over the results of the upcoming presidential election. In the address Grant argued that the people must put their trust in Congress stating: "In all periods of history controversies have arisen as to the succession or choice of the chiefs of states and no party or citizens loving their country and its free institutions can sacrifice too much of mere feeling in preserving through the upright course of law their country from the smallest danger to its peace on such an occasion; and it can not be impressed too firmly in the hearts of all the people that true liberty and real progress can exist only through a cheerful adherence to constitutional law. unknown books

There are also a couple of pages dated 1921 regarding the Riviera Theater perhaps the company was on Tour. There are two pictures enclosed: one cut from a magazine showing a family and then a separate photo of two young women one of whom is in the magazine picture. One gets the impression this is Mr. Johnson's family or the family of his girlfriend. Sixty five plus pages of which one third have writings makes this a unique relic of the stage arts and Chicago arts Americana. 1841 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED ALS AND HANDWRITTEN BY AN INTERESTING BALTIMORE MERCHANT AND ONE TIME CONSUL OF THE KINGDOM OF HAWAII WITH INTELLIGENCE REGARDING THE WINE TRADE
Baltimore Maryland MD 1841. On offer is an original one 1 page letter approx. 7-7/8" x 9-3/4" dated at Baltimore Md. Dec. 7 1841 from G.S. Oldfield to T.J. Tobias at New York City. Folded letter has blue "BALTIMORE/MD." cds postmark and manuscript "18-3/4" rate. The writer of this letter Granville S. Oldfield was a Commission Merchant in Baltimore and was for several years the Consul of the Kingdom of Hawaii for Md. & Delaware. He was a patron of the arts and his great collection of paintings of English Masters was auctioned in NYC by court order in 1862. Tobias was an eminent Jewish merchant in Baltimore and New York. In his later years he was primarily in the wine and liquor trade. He was born in England and was a nephew of Morris Tobias the famous watch & chronometer maker of London who was most active in the 1790's. The letter has great content about the wine business in which Oldfield writes that sales of Sweet Malaga are brisk and he urges Tobias to buy up as much as he can from the ships arriving at New York. He also writes of the market for Port and prospects for the Spring. "I notice Sweet Malaga is selling at 30c six months credit in New York. If you can purchase one or two hundred casks at that price and credit of a good brand I recommend your so doing from alongside the vessel of importation. You can easily obtain freight at 15c. Be assured this article will soon advance in price with you. It is selling here at 35c and you will not obtain it in a week from this at 30c. Peter Harmony Francis and others have.late supplies therefore look out at once. I will send you the Malensey as it will not sell here. The Port is moving slowly but surely. We shall have a fair trade all the Winter and our Spring sales will open early and bravely. I wish I could have heard friend Cuthbertson make that speech at the great dinner the other day." VG. . 1930s ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT LOG BOOK AND TRAINING JOURNAL OF THE SEA SCOUT PATROL PROGRAM CHARMINGLY WRITTEN AND ILLUSTRATED BY THE SHIP'S COXSWAIN
ASEA. Good. 1935. On offer is a charming original 1930s manuscript log and notebook comprising 42 pages of logs notes and study materials and drawings of flags anchors ships etc. all relating to sailing ships and the sea and another section of roughly equal length with notes on geology rock types and drawings of formations reflecting a parallel perhaps later interest in natural history. The author identifies himself as Coxswain Granville Wilson of the Sea Scout Patrol Harrison. Eleven Scouts are noted by list. Collectors and historians will find a very unique book of the exemplfying the beloved Sea Scout movement which began in the early 20th Century in England and then finding huge popularity in America in the early 20s and on. This journal is a superb relic of these 11 young people who were but one group out of 8043 who trained in 1930 records show. There is also a photo dated on the back 1937 of a sailor and more than likely a former Sea Scout. The Sea Scout were particularly noted by Admiral Nimitz for their service in WWII. Grasser was a German Luftwaffe fighter ace and Knight's Cross recipient who flew 700 combat missions on the Western and Eastern fronts and North Africa claiming 103 downed enemy aircraft; Leppa was a fellow Luftwaffe ace also a Knight's Cross recipient who flew more than 500 missions and is credited with shooting down 68 enemy aircraft. The titles include: "A History of Wood Types"; "How to Print Wood Type" with illustrations by Marilyn Grastorf; "Forty-nine Fonts of Wood Type"; and "Posters." The type specimens are complete and correspond to the printed list save for the inclusion of a sheet of 4-line Antique Tuscan Expanded that is not called for. This was perhaps an oversight as there is also a repeat entry for the 10-line Grecian Condensed. All the examples are printed directly from wood type. Each volume is laid into dark blue wrappers and housed in a wooden case with two clasps and a wood type poster as a label. A couple of very faint scratches to one side of the wooden box else very fine. Prospectus and T.L.s. from Dennis Grastorf laid in. Publisher's full navy cloth gilt lettering on spine gilt medallion on cover two family trees fold-out bound in. The dust jacket's rear panel contains a list of 40 Smith and Hass titles all priced making it highly unlikely that this is a book club edition which is in any event the same as the trade edition. The front flap begins with "In A.D. 41" and the rear panel begins with "At the height" indicating this issue has priority over issue beginning with other text. Later versions have additional inserted text at the top of the front flap which cause the rear flap to begin with "Suddenly." "The troublesome reign of Tiberius Claudius Caesar Emperor of the Romans born B.C. 10 died A.D. 54 as described by himself; also his murder at the hands of the notorious Agrippina mother of the Emperor Nero and his subsequent deification as described by others.". The volume is in almost perfect condition showing only the slightest shelf-wear unmarked tight square and clean. The dust jacket unpriced and unclipped now in Mylar is chipped with some loss at the head of the spine and lightly soiled on the rear panel. NEAR FINE/VERY GOOD. .
