The back shows craquelure. The lower corners are somewhat abraded. Front joint starting to split at the foot of spine. The clasps of the catches are gone and have been replaced by two strips of leather. Flyleaf at the end gone. Bookplate pasted on the inside of the upper board Note: The Greek physician Hippocrates 460-370 B.C. is known as the father of medicine and was the first epidemiologist. He sought a logic to sickness and attempted to explain disease occurrence from a rational perspective rather than a supernatural basis. In his day people generally thought that one was sick because of the gods. Hippocrates was the first to examine the relationships between the occurrence of disease and environmental influences and human behaviour. The distinction between 'epidemic' and 'endemic' was drawn by Hippocrates to distinguish between diseases that are 'visited upon' a population epidemic i.e diseases that seem to appear and disappear over time from those that 'reside within' a population endemic a disease specific to one location The treatise 'Epidemics' consists of seven books. Each book contains in addition to the case histories two other types of material: constitutions and generalizations aphorisms prognostic indications lists of things to consider various notes � This is the fist work of Anuce Fo�s Anutius Foesius 1528-1595 an edition of the second book of the 'Epidemics' de morbis vulgaribus it includes a Latin translation and an extensive commentary. Fo�s studied medicine at Paris and returned to his native city Metz to become city physician. He worked 8 years on this book he tells in the 'praefatio'. This was the beginning of a lifelong dedication to Hippocrates and scholarship. After more than 30 years of hard work Fo�s produced in 1595 the Hippocrates edition which was to remain the best edition of the Greek text and Latin translation for 250 years. It was only surpassed by the edition of Littr� of 1839/61. The edition of Fo�s shows profound criticism and has learned commentaries; his variant readings are numerous and well chosen Provenance: The engraved bookplate belongs to the German author and philosopher Ernst J�nger 1895 - 1998. The manuscript text on the bookplate reads: 'F�r Gerhard Nebel zum Geburtstage. Ernst J�nger 26-9-1948'. Ernst J�nger was a highly decorated German soldier and author who became famous for his World War I memoir 'In Stahlgewittern' Storm of Steel. J�nger rebelled against an affluent upbringing and sought adventure in the Wandervogel movement before running away to briefly serve in the French Foreign Legion an illegal act. Because he escaped prosecution in Germany due to his father's efforts J�nger was able to enlist on the outbreak of war in 1914. In the aftermath of World War II J�nger was treated with some suspicion as a possible fellow traveler of the Nazis. By the latter stages of the Cold War his unorthodox writings about the impact of materialism in modern society were widely seen as conservative rather than radical nationalist and his philosophical works came to be highly regarded in mainstream German circles. J�nger ended his long life as a honoured establishment figure although critics continued to charge him with the glorification of war as a transcending experience. � Gerhard Nebel 1903-1974 was a German author and conservative cultural critic. He studied philosophy and classical philology in Freiburg Marburg and Heidelberg from 1923 to 1927. He took his doctor's degree in Heidelberg in 1927 with a dissertation 'Plotins Kategorien der intelligibelen Welt'. Nebel was drafted into the Luftwaffe and worked as a translator in Paris in 1941 where he met Ernst J�nger. After the war he worked again as a teacher. He published his diaries and the essay collections 'Von den Elementen' and 'Tyrannis und Freiheit'. Nebel was highly influenced by J�nger to whom he dedicated his first books. In 1948 appeared his 'Ernst J�nger und das Schicksal des Menschen' followed by 'Ernst J�nger Abenteuer des Geistes' 1949 in which he offered an interpretation of J�nger's work. ‎Waterloo Iowa IA Marietta Ohio. Fine. 1914. Original Cloth. Written by Hiram Maynard of Waterloo Iowa this delightful and well-written diary spans the last half of his senior year in high school and the early portion of his freshman year at what I believe is Marietta College in Marietta Ohio. Provided are entries for most days of the year 1914. Browsing through it becomes evident that the young man came from a fairly affluent family and associated with friends who were also well off. Noted is that his father was employed by the Ciitizens Gas and Electric Company of Waterloo. There are frequent references to automobiles a most expensive luxury in 1909! hotel stays out-of-town visits attendance theatre/movie/vaudeville performances and one entry makes reference to his own motorcycle. It also sems that his parents were fairly liberal in his upbringing given his late hours though it's clear that the young man led a wholesome life popular with his many friends involved in school and church activities. Note his reference to hearing a Garfield speech: a relation to a relative of the then-late President Garfield Presumably it was a campaign speech for Republican congressional candidates in the then-forthcoming November election. Note also the fine penmanship. ‎ABOARD USS DACOTAH TALCAHUANO BAY CHILE. Good. 1867. On offer is an original 1867 manuscript letter handwritten by US Navy Engineer Hiram Parker Jr. while serving aboard the USS Dacotah. The 12 page diary like letter was written over a period from January 26th to February 2nd 1867 from Talcahuano Bay Chile. The very interesting letter makes mention of ex Civil War General Kilpatrick while he was the American Minister in Chile was onboard along with the secretary who was seasick onboard during the trip and describes the city of Talcahuano Bay in detail along with the city of Valparaiso and the insides of a church there. He mentions that minister General Kilpatrick inviting him and the other officers into his home and mentions some officers marrying wealthy Chilean women and that one officer was given $50000 on the morning he was married by the father in law. She Accepted A Teaching Position At Punahou A Missionary School In Hawaii Where She Served On The Faculty For Over A Decade. Afterward She Studied At New York University Receiving Her Master Of Arts In 1899. In 1903 After Taking Up Residence In Detroit And Later In Pasadena She Married Eldridge M. Fowler A Businessman With Interests In Mines Railroads And Lumber From The Midwest To The Pacific Northwest. Faintly age toned. On letterhead of "Office of Morton Bliss & Co." Hiscock fulfills some unnamed request: "I acknowledge the honor of your request and comply with great pleasure." Boldly penned in brown ink. Quite strange that the seated U.S. Senator would be writing on letterhead of this banking firm founded by the man who in 1887 Hiscock defeated in the caucus for the New York senate seat -- former representative and ambassador and then- current vice president Levi P.
