Signed letter from Irving on his stationery to Neilson laid in in which Irving says that Neilson's photos will also be used on the UK edition and jokes that another photo to be used for the American and Canadian editions is more flattering because it doesn't show Irving's face. Closes with mention of a nearby school in Vermont. Neilson was a preeminent motorcycle journalist and editor of Cycle Magazine. Previous owner's inscription dated 1885 but no date anywhere in book; Belford Clarke published reprints such as this from 1875 to 1892. Very light wear at corners covers otherwise very bright and gilt still unusually brilliant having been protected by the jacket. In the original rare 19th century dust jacket printed in red only on the front panel "Sketch Book" above with "Belford Clarke & Co. Publishers Chicago and New York." below; dust jacket with chips and tears at corners but almost all is still present although there is a little sloppy ink outlining to "Sketch" in the title also printed in red "Sketch Book." on spine. I have seen an illustration of a different and much more elaborate dust jacket for this Belford Clarke edition so apparently there are variants.
