On offer is a superb fine and unique handwritten manuscript book representative of top tier 18th century European education and study of astronomy including theory problems corollaries and observations and with relation to map making geography and philosophy. This elegant book would have served as a course 'text' at the Catholic University of Louvain as evidenced by the engraved title page vignette of a major building at Louvain straddled by portraits of Plato and Aristotle while overhead the Latin motto "Porcus Alit Doctos" features Mary Joseph and the baby Jesus on one side and a caped shepherd on the other and then inscribed by hand in the central panel by or for philosophy student Jacobus Van Asten Leendanus ANNO 1786. One online source provides a succinct explanation as to the importance of astronomy at this time in history: "During the course of the eighteenth century the combination of theoretical and practical advances allowed astronomy to solve most of the outstanding problems that had been raised by the work of Newton and the earlier astronomers. New instruments such as the micrometer reflecting telescope and achromatic telescope allowed the cataloging of stars with increasing precision and the discovery of new phenomena such as aberration nutation nebulae and a new planet - by the end of the century astronomy seemed to have become the most perfect science and astronomers were beginning to speculate concerning the origins and shape of the universe." In handsome cursive handwriting 20 x 16.5 cm 8vo original calf raised bands and mottled paper boards there is some wear to the hinges but is otherwise sturdy; features nine engraved plates many fold out and a number other graphics throughout a previous bookdealer's notes identify the engraver as Charles Becker who worked at Louvain University at the time of the birth of Louis XVII Benezit I pp.563. Laid In Loosely Are The "Book List" And The Form For Application And Orders. Jacque Fresco 1916 - 2017 Was An American Futurist And Self-Described Social Engineer. Self-Taught He Worked In A Variety Of Positions Related To Industrial Design. Fresco Worked At Douglas Aircraft Company In California During The Late 1930S. He Presented Designs Including A Flying Wing And A Disk-Shaped Aircraft. Fresco Was Commissioned By Earl "Madman" Muntz To Design Low Cost Housing. Muntz Invested $500000 Seed Money In The Project. Fresco 32 Years Old At The Time Along With His Associates Harry Giaretto And Eli Catran Conceived Designed And Engineered A Project House Called The Trend Home. Built Mostly Of Aluminum And Glass It Was On Prominent Display At Stage 8 Of The Warner Bros. Sunset Lot In Hollywood For Three Months. Without Federal Or Further Private Funding The Project Did Not Go Into Mass Production. This Experience Led Fresco To The Conclusion That Society Would Have To Be Changed For His Inventions To Reach Their Potential.In The Late 1940S Fresco Created And Was Director Of Scientific Research Laboratories In Los Angeles. Here He Also Gave Lectures And Taught Technical Design Meanwhile Researching And Working On Inventions As A Freelance Inventor And Scientific Consultant. During This Period Fresco Struggled To Get His Research Funded And Faced Setbacks And Financial Difficulties. In 1955 Fresco Left California After His Laboratory Was Removed To Build The Golden State Freeway.In 1955 Fresco Moved To Miami Florida. In Miami Fresco Presented Designs Of A Circular City. Fresco Made His Living Working As An Industrial Designer For Various Companies Such As Alcoa And The Major Realty Corporation. In 1961 With Pietro Belluschi And C. Frederick Wise Fresco Collaborated On A Project Known As The Sandwich House. Consisting Of Mostly Prefabricated Components Partitions And Aluminum It Sold For $2950 Or $7500 With Foundation And All Internal Installations. During This Period Fresco Supported His Projects By Designing Prefabricated Aluminum Devices Through Jacque Fresco Enterprises Inc. From 1955 To 1969 Fresco Named His Social Ideas "Project Americana". Looking Forward Was Published In 1969. Author Ken Keyes Jr. And Jacque Fresco Coauthored The Book A Speculative Look At The Future. The Authors Picture An Ideal 'Cybernetic Society In Which Want Has Been Banished And Work And Personal Possessions No Longer Exist; Individual Gratification Is The Total Concern' .Fresco Formed "Sociocyberneering" A Membership Organization Claiming 250 Members. ‎OSLO NORWAY QUEBEC CANADA. Good. 1952. On offer is a super original manuscript relic of Canadian Olympic aspirations and accomplishment at the 1952 Winter Olympic Games at Oslo Norway being a diary and photo journal handwritten and compiled by Jacques Charland who was a member of the Canadian Olympic ski jumping team in the 1950's and 60's. Mr. Charland does a great job documenting his trip to Oslo in 1952 to represent Canada as a premier ski jumper and provides a ground eye perspective of being an Olympic participant. The large over-stuffed 6 x 9� inch French language save for the English inscription diary contains 40 handwritten pages starting from his departure in January to his return in March of 1952. The first page is also signed by 20 members of the Canadian Olympic Team. Along with the narrative there are also 140 original photos including many taken at the games and some newspaper clippings. Charland begins: "Three Rivers January 14th 1951 a mistake when he wrote 1951 because all of the pages after that are for 1952. "Jacques Charland 1032 Chapleau St. 3-Rivers P.2. For my trip to Oslo Norway and other European Countries. This book is for the purpose of an exact day to day report and of my first trip across the ocean by plane to foreign countries. Signed Jacques Charland." Most of the photos are snapshots and are black and white however there are also some color photos. They are not only of the games but also of his sight seeing adventures including the people he's with and met. It was difficult picking out the photos to share with you as I could have easily scanned most of them they are that good. The diary is about 6" x 9 �" and is almost 2" thick. The first page has a cut out of it at the bottom but the rest of the pages look good even with some age toning. Possibly seven photos are missing as just the four cornered tabs are left but there are still 140 photos in this journal. The marbled cover features some Olympic stamps.
