Poor quality paper of last few numbers embrowned in margins; otherwise a nice copy. Scarce. According to CBEL ‘Houshold Words’ ceased publication on 28th May 1859 and was replaced by ‘All the Year Round’ which ceased publication on 30th March 1895. This continuation of the two magazines under the editorship first of Charles Dickens II the resuscitated ‘Household Words’ beginning according to the editor’s obituary notice in the issue of August 8th 1896 in 1881 and later his son also Charles Dickens appears to be unrecorded. Most of the contributions are anonymous or overtly pseudonymous but named contributors include M.M. Fitzgerald H.F. The title-page which belongs to the second semi-annual volume of 1859 is misleading and has been inserted apparently for the sake of having a title-page the volume consisting in fact of the issues for October 1859 and January 1860. A ms. note somewhat cropped on the upper margin of the Contents to No.225 January is expanded on an inset leaf following the front end-paper beneath the contemporary ownership inscription of one John Campbell Quinn as follows: “‘Diary of a Visit to England in 1775’ by the Revd. Dr. Campbell page 322 - The materials for the article on Dr. Campbell’s Diary were communicated to me by Lord Macaulay being his last contribution to these pages made within a short time of his death - Ed. E. Review 1859-60.†This article was not included amongst the collection of contributions to the Edinburgh published posthumously. Front cover and spine detached spine badly torn and a little chipped corner of front cover chipped away but present; one leaf largely lacking; otherwise internally nice and the sewing entirely sound. Brewer pp.167-70. Ninety-one numbers in all were published and fifteen supplements. Brewer notes only nine and complete copies are said to be very rare. In the present copy the spine bears the legend ‘2 Vols in one’ but as will be clear from the collation given above only the first volume and the first 280pp. of the second volume together with the Monthly Supplement to the First Part and the Monthly Supplements of the second volume to the end of 1835 are here present. This would appear to be the complete collected edition as put up by the publisher. According to CBEL the Journal ceased publication on 26th December 1835. The last Number present here is 73 dated August 22 1835 but the last Supplement bears the date ‘Dec.31 1835’. From No.62 dated June 6 1835 onwards there is added the sub-title ‘And The printing machine’. In this copy p.96 of Vol.II. is numbered 69. Carlyle and Landor were among the contributors. Poor quality paper very lightly embrowned; otherwise a nice copy. Scarce. According to CBEL ‘Houshold Words’ ceased publication on 28th May 1859 and was replaced by ‘All the Year Round’ which ceased publication on 30th March 1895. This continuation of the two magazines under the editorship first of Charles Dickens II the resuscitated ‘Household Words’ beginning according to the editor’s obituary notice in the issue of August 8th 1896 in 1881 and later his son also Charles Dickens appears to be unrecorded. Most of the contributions are anonymous but named contributors include Barbara Dempster W.B. Tyndall Alice Gill Marion F. Theed Stella M. Düring E. Bindon H.F. Abel and Christian Lys all of whom contribute serials. The magazine’s backer Joseph Smith died early in the year and financial stringency seems to have set in with a deterioration in the quality of the paper used.
