Originally published in 1791 as "Voyages and Travels of an Indian Interpreter and Trader describing The Manners and Customs of the North American Indians: with an account of the Posts situated on The River Saint Laurence Lake Ontario &c. to which is added A Vocabulary of the Chippeway Language Names of Furs and Skins in English and French a List of Words in the Iroquois Mohegan Shawanee and Esquimeaux Tongues and a table showing The Analogy between the Algonkin and Chippeway Languages." Long was a native of England who came out to Canada in 1768 in the capacity of an articled clerk to a merchant of Montreal. Upon the expiration of the seven-year term of his indebture and at the outbreak of the American Revolution in 1775 he placed himself at the head of an Indian raiding party serving in the Royalist cause. Afer tw-years of such service he left the service and headed out to Mackinac to engage in the Northwest fur trade. His journal was first published in London in 1791. The map and title-page in this volume are taken from reproductions from the 1791 edition. . Front cover has one slight scratch and a light scuff-mark gilt on top edge has a light brown stain "Compliments of the Season" card from R. R. William Lewis Manly 1820-1903 was an American pioneer of the mid-19th century. He was first a fur hunter a guide of Westward bound caravans a seeker of gold and then a farmer and writer in his later years. He wrote an autobiography first published with the title "From Vermont to California" then a second edition with the title "Death Valley in '49" which tells of the pioneer experience in America's Far West in particular the 1848 California Gold Rush. In December 1848 at age 29 Manly traversed California's Death Valley today the centerpiece of Death Valley National Park as a member of a group of emigrant pioneers traveling overland from Salt Lake City Utah to the California gold rush the Death Valley '49ers. These pioneers became lost in the Great Basin Desert and entered Death Valley having followed an inaccurate map for three weeks. Their food supplies were almost exhausted and the oxen pulling their wagons were dying of starvation. Manly with his associate John Haney Rogers trekked 250 miles on foot across the Mojave Desert to Rancho San Fernando near Los Angeles California to scout an evacuation route for the families trapped in Death Valley and procure food and horses if a settlement could be located. . Illustrated with B&W drawings by the author. In red cloth-covered slipcase. Sir William Schwenck Gilbert 1836 � 1911 was an English dramatist librettist poet and illustrator best known for the 14 comic operas known as the Savoy operas produced in collaboration with the composer Sir Arthur Sullivan. The most famous of these include H.M.S. Pinafore The Pirates of Penzance and one of the most frequently performed works in the history of musical theatre The Mikado. The Bab Ballads are a collection of light verse by W. S. Gilbert illustrated with his own comic drawings. Gilbert wrote the Ballads before he became famous for his comic opera librettos with Arthur Sullivan. In writing the Bab Ballads Gilbert developed his unique "topsy-turvy" style where the humour was derived by setting up a ridiculous premise and working out its logical consequences however absurd. The Ballads also reveal Gilbert's cynical and satirical approach to humour. They became famous on their own as well as being a source for plot elements characters and songs that Gilbert would recycle in the Gilbert and Sullivan operas. The Bab Ballads take their name from Gilbert's childhood nickname and he later began to sign his illustrations "Bab". Nothing else quite like the Ballads has ever been produced in the English language. They contain both satire and nonsense as well as a great deal of utter absurdity. The Ballads were read aloud at private dinner-parties public banquets and even in the House of Lords. The ballads have been much published and there are even recordings of readings of some of them. . The volume is in excellent condition unmarked tight square and clean. The leather on the spine only is very mildly sunned some mild wear to slipcase else fine. A very beautiful book. NEAR FINE. . Addressed to Professor Albert Johannsen author of "The House of Beadle and Adams and Its Dime and Nickel Novels" University of Oklahoma Press 1950 the definitive reference work and bibliography on the subject. Near fine. "In answer to your request" writes Williams "I enclose a page from the MS of my novel 'Goshen Street.' It must have been written in the summer of 1919." Bold full signature. Second the aforementioned manuscript page an unsigned AM 1p 8�" X 11" n.p. n.y. Near fine. Full holograph leaf in pencil and marked as page 294 from this novel published by Frederic A. Stokes Company in New York in 1920. Williams' script is as usual hurried by fairly legible. Also present is Johannsen's original 8�" X 11" file folder bearing a printed "Collection of Albert Johannsen" label partly filled in by Johannsen. Third and last -- but certainly not least is an inscribed first edition of "Goshen Street." Small 8vo. Brown cloth. 323pp. Very good. Slight bit of edgewear and bumped corners but tight and attractive overall. Delightfully this is Williams' personal copy of his book bearing his handsome custom bookplate on the front pastedown. Opposite this on the front flyleaf he inscribes it boldly and whimsically -- to himself! "W.W. Williams / from / The Author. / Harding Day 1920. / On this day W.L. Phelps talked / of this book in his public lecture / and this copy was used by him / in reviewing the work for the N.Y. / Times Sunday Oct. 31." Phelps 1865-1943 was an English professor at Yale University 1892-1933 and a popular and influential literary critic essayist and lecturer. Do you call it an "association copy" when the author inscribes it to himself Why Phelps would be using Williams' personal copy of "Goshen Street" as his review copy or how Williams ended up Phelps' review copy is a mystery -- though the fact that Williams and Phelps both lived in New Haven probably had something to do with it! City check printed in blue and drawn on the Broadway Bank from the "Election Expenses" account paying $125 to Terence M. Lynch for voter registration services rendered. Large and ornate with a nautical theme vignette featuring a sailor and a Native American maiden. Signed boldly in brown ink by Opdyke as mayor Matthew T. Brennan as Comptroller and F.B.
