‎An Enquiry into the Nature of Certain 19th Century Pamphlets‎

‎New York: Haskell House Publishers Ltd 1971. Very Good condition but for a small insect hole than runs through the margin of 5 leaves NO text is affected and a few ink notes. A solid reading/reference copy. This fully documented study exposed as forgeries more than 50 "first editions" by Wordsworth Tennyson Dickens Thackeray R. L. Stevenson Rudyard Kipling Swinburne etc. By using scientific methods never before applied to bibliographical problems the authors pointed to Thomas J. Wise one of England's foremost collectors and bibliographers as the forger. First publication in 1934 created a huge sensation in the book collecting world. Still a fascinating read. 5 plates. Bound in the original brown cloth. Webber p44. . Reprint of the 1934 original. Hardcover. Very Good condition/No dust jacket as issued.
