12 mo. 2 pp. To an unnamed recipient addressed as "Dear Auntie", asking her whether she knows any Americans in Paris who would like to join one of Artôt de Padilla's musical soirées, as they would hear "compatriot voices", naming several artists who were scheduled to perform: "Je sais que vous ne sortez pas le soir, je ne vous invite pas à notre soirée musicale du Jeudi 7 Novembre - Mais si vouz avez quelques amis américains que cela intéressait - envoyez moi leurs noms et leurs adresses. Je serai heureuse qu'ils entendent quelques belles voix compatriates - J'ai Nikita, le nouveau contralto de l'opéra, Miss Patts, M.me de Tercane [?], M.lles de Korff et de Broemsen en un mot je crois que ce sera belle". Among the artists mentioned in the letter, only the American opera singer Nikita (b. 1872) can be identified. - A student of Pauline Viardot, Désirée Artôt made her successful debut at the Paris Opéra in Meyerbeer's "Le prophète" on 5 February 1858. Engagements in Milan, Berlin, London, St Petersburg, and Moscow followed. During an 1868 tour in Russia, Artôt met Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, who dedicated his Romance in F minor for piano (Op. 5) to Artôt and eventually proposed to her. Both Tchaikovsky and Artôt had second thoughts, and the marriage was not finalized. On 15 September 1869, Artôt married the Spanish baritone Mariano Padilla y Ramos without informing Tchaikovsky, who learned the news from Nikolai Rubinstein. The memory of these events was fresh in Tchaikovsky's mind when he composed "Romeo and Juliet" in 1869. They met on several occasions after the engagement and in 1887 Tchaikovsky even dedicated his "Six French Songs" (Op. 65) to Désirée Artôt-Padilla, whom he considered one of the greatest singers alive. - Minimally stained.

½ S. Folio (223:282 mm). Albumblatt mit gedruckter Bordüre und gedr. Fußzeile "Beitrag zum Selbstschriftenalbum 'Deutschlands Zukunft'", aufgezogen auf einen Bogen Pergamentpapier (ca. 330:344 mm). "Ich bin von Deutschlands überragender Stellung im Europäischen Völkerkonzern überzeugt und glaube fest an seine Grösse und Zukunft [...]". Geschrieben als Beitrag für die von Friedrich Koslowsky im Berliner Eigenbrödler-Verlag herausgegebene Faksimile-Anthologie "Deutschlands Köpfe der Gegenwart über Deutschlands Zukunft" (1928). Die Sentenz bei Veröffentlichung in Druckschrift wiedergegeben. - 1909/10 war Ascher musikalischer Leiter des Cabaret Fledermaus; in den 1920er Jahren begann er Volkslieder und Filmmusik zu schreiben. Nachdem er in der Reichspogromnacht vorübergehend verhaftet worden war, emigrierte er noch 1938 nach New York, wo der promovierte Jurist Urheberrechtsfälle bearbeitete. Sein künstlerischer Nachlass wird im "Leo Ascher Centre of Operetta Music" in der Millersville University of Pennsylvania verwahrt. Koslowsky 277.

ril. Questo libro racconta la storia del primo album realizzato dal Wu-Tang Clan, intitolato Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) e pubblicato alla fine del 1993. Sembra semplice, messa così, ma ci sono molti modi per raccontare una storia. Questo non è, per esempio, uno di quei volumi che ti spiegano per filo e per segno ogni sessione di registrazione, chi c'era, cosa indossava, chi è uscito un attimo per fumarsi una sigaretta e così via. Invece, è un tentativo di riflettere la forma e l'ethos sia dell'album su cui si concentra, sia dell'hip hop nel complesso: il genere o, più precisamente, la cultura a cui appartiene quell'album. Il periodo dal 1993 al 1994 è stato infatti un momento chiave per l'evoluzione dell'hip hop, una sorta di rinascimento a vent'anni dalla sua nascita negli slums del South Bronx. Uno degli scopi di questo libro sarà mostrare il genio unico dell'operazione dell'hip hop, la maniera in cui rilancia molte tradizioni della musica e della cultura afroamericana in modi completamente nuovi, allontanandosi dalla linearità della tradizione musicale occidentale e abbracciando la citazione non solo come strumento o tecnica, ma come l'ethos stesso della creatività, dell'originalità. Ovviamente ogni appassionato dell'hip hop ha il proprio disco o gruppo preferito, ma il presupposto di questo libro è che il genio dell'hip hop raggiunge una sorta di apogeo selvaggio e sgangherato in Enter the Wu-Tang, e che avvicinarsi alla comprensione di quel disco significa anche capire qualcosa dell'America, un luogo che, come la musica a cui ha dato vita, crea bellezza e audacia, umorismo e calore, il tutto a partire dall'orrore sottostante. Per adeguarsi al soggetto che tratta, anche questo libro adotterà come modello un approccio da gazza ladra, in gran parte non lineare e ricco di oggetti e campionamenti. Invece di un libro, avete aperto la scatola di un puzzle.
