ill., br. «Nell'estate del 2021 la mostra che il Museo Novecento ha dedicato ad Arturo Martini ha riportato a Firenze, tra le altre, una piccola scultura realizzata in terra refrattaria che raffigura uno dei personaggi femminili più noti della tragedia shakespeariana, Ofelia. La scultura era stata esposta a Palazzo Ferroni nel 1931. Entrata a far parte della collezione di Castelnuovo-Tedesco in occasione della mostra fiorentina, era rimasta in città alla partenza della famiglia a pochi mesi dall'entrata in vigore delle leggi razziali, per ricomparire nel Dopoguerra nella nuova casa dei Castelnuovo-Tedesco insieme con quei "mobili superstiti delle nostre case passate" evocati da Mario nella sua autobiografia. Era, quindi, con ogni probabilità sempre rimasta in città, nascosta, per poi partire verso gli Stati Uniti dopo la morte della moglie di Mario, Clara, avvenuta nel 1989. Seguendo Ofelia è un omaggio a quest'opera di grande forza evocativa e all'uomo che l'aveva custodita per tutta la vita, Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco. L'attenzione su Ofelia ci ha portato infatti a ripensare alla formazione culturale del compositore fiorentino, nutrita anche di arti visive, e di osservarne da un punto di vista privilegiato la vita, in particolare quei primissimi anni Trenta in cui la sua casa fiorentina era aperta ad artisti, letterati e musicisti, e offriva le pareti alle tele degli amici pittori. Il nostro racconto si arricchisce, attraverso i ricordi dello stesso Castelnuovo-Tedesco, delle suggestioni iconografiche che sono state fonte di ispirazione per le sue composizioni, dando vita a un gioco di rimandi in cui anche le dediche a stampa negli spartiti ci riportano al ricchissimo panorama figurativo che animava la vita e l'opera del musicista ed insieme al fervido clima culturale fiorentino tra le due guerre. Ma la vicenda di Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco e della sua Ofelia riporta alla mente anche un destino comune a tantissime opere d'arte durante gli anni delle leggi razziali, trafugate, sottratte, nei casi più fortunati nascoste con l'aiuto di amici o conoscenti e riportate alla luce dopo il conflitto. A noi evoca soprattutto la sorte della collezione di Leone Ambron, che a quella data già comprendeva il nucleo più cospicuo di quadri macchiaioli. Miracolosamente sfuggite alle requisizioni, donate proprio all'indomani della Liberazione e oggi esposte alla Galleria d'arte moderna di Palazzo Pitti, quelle tele ponevano le basi di un lascito che oggi arriva a contare quasi quattrocento opere. Un gesto di grande generosità, certo, ma che in quel momento storico acquistava anche il valore di straordinario senso di appartenenza a quel paese che pochi anni prima lo aveva privato di ogni diritto, compreso quello di possedere opere d'arte.» (Giovanna Lambroni e Dora Liscia Bemporad)

An den Musikschriftsteller Josef Schrattenholz mit einer Absage zur Mitarbeit an Schrattenholzens Zeitung, jedoch mit der Zusage, diese abonnieren zu wollen: "Ich bin vollauf mit Vorbereitungen für die Crystal Palace Saturday Concerts und die schottische Saison beschäftigt und will Ihnen die Prospectes von beiden zuschicken sobald sie fertig und gedruckt sind. Ihr kleiner Cello-Neffe gab mir mit seinem Solo-Vortrag bei meinem am 8ten Mai stattgefundenen Benifiz Conzert abermals herzerfreuende Beweise von seiner hervorragenden musikalischen Begabung: Der Junge spielte wie ein Mann [...]". Der "Cello-Neffe" war Leonhard Schrattenholz, der Sohn des Pianisten und Violinisten Max Schrattenholz, der bei dem genannten Konzert "durch den Vortrag eines Romberg'schen Konzertes allgemeines Aufsehen und begeisterten Beifall erregt" hatte. Hardcover. 4to hardback in dustwrapper; these early editions are difficult to date this book was first published 1917 and this copy was certainly published by 1918 as George Harrap is not yet given as a Limited company and they became Limited in 1918 so it could be a 1st impression or a 2nd impression but I cannot say which. The dustwrapper is scarce; As well as the numerous black and white line dtawings and decorations the book contains 8 full page colour plates as well as the dustwrapper which matches the design of the book cover; The book is in remarkably good clean condition for its age; the dustwrapper is grubby on the rear and has some chipping to edges and a small closed tear; for an anne Anderson fan it is a treasure; ; 4to 11" - 13" tall .
