Chi lo conosce sa che nei suoi scritti profonde riflessioni sui problemi dell'interpretazione musicale si alternano ad aneddoti, considerazioni sulla tecnica pianistica a sapide testimonianze sui rapporti ora idilliaci ora burrascosi con direttori d'orchestra e cantanti: e questo vademecum lo conferma. Qui tutto ruota intorno al pianoforte, "mobile dai denti bianchi e neri" che sotto le mani dell'interprete diviene "luogo di metamorfosi", unico strumento che consenta di "evocare la voce umana nel canto, il timbro di altri strumenti, l'orchestra, l'arcobaleno o l'armonia delle sfere".
