On letterhead of the "Comedie Francaise" Charpentier notifies American expatriate pianist and music critic Irving Schwerke 1893-1975 of his appointment as director of a music journal. Very uncommon and a lovely vintage example. unknown

Postcard format. Together 1 p. and 4 lines. The earlier postcard from Cannes to the singer Marie Rueff with a short message directly underneath, apologizing for not being able to attend an audition: "Un peu loin ! pour l'audition. Excusez-moi". - The second postcard to a M. Chatelin concerns Charpentier's charitable Conservatoire Populaire Mimi Pinson. Because the famous mime Georges Wague was still advertising the pantomime class despite a "limitation of students", Charpentier underlines that "all inscriptions will only be definite after the approval of the administration and of the professor", and gives further instructions. - Charpentier had founded the Conservatoire Populaire Mimi Pinson in 1902 to provide free artistic education to working girls in Paris. The name of the conservatory refers to the emblematic working-class character from Alfred Musset's 1845 poem "Mimi Pinson, profil de grisette". The poem inspired Henry Murger to create his like-named character in "Scènes de la Vie Bohème". Charpentier's greatest success "Louise", which premiered in 1900, is the story of working-class life in Paris, the heroine being a seamstress. Unable to repeat this success as a composer, Charpentier remained active as a music critic and concert promoter as well as with charitable work. -The postcard to Rueff with a tear and pinchfolds not affecting the text; the postcard to Chatelin partly smudged.

(Oblong) 8vo and visiting card format. 3 pp. To a friend with congratulations on his work, of which he hopes to receive a copy: "Je suis très content de votre triomphe [...] Recevrai-je votre chef d'oeuvre?". - To a friend cancelling their meeting the next day, due to his promise to attend a performance of his opera "Louise", an appointment he had almost forgotten: "J'avai oublié que demain j'ai promis d'être à Louise - qui passe en soirée! [...] C'est un gros malheur! Je l'avais si peu prévu. Vous pardonnez à mon étourderie que vient de m'apparaitre tantôt dans toute la candeur [...]". On headed stationery of the Oeuvre de Mimi Pinson, an association providing the workingwomen of Paris with free theatre tickets, as well as free music and dance classes, founded by Charpentier in 1900. - A visiting card expressing his condolences: "Mon coeur bat avec le votre en ces douleureux moments. Mes hommages respectueux [...]". - Slightly creased; visiting card with small rust stains.

Je suis sur que sous votre habile direction les Concerts Modernes prendront une place très importante dans le Mouvement d'art français [...]". - With small marginal tears, as well as a few tiny holes.

Charpentier schlägt die Bitte des Empfängers einen Vortrag zu halten dankend aus: "Votre lettre me parvient en retour d'un voyage, et je vous prie d'excuser mon retard d'y répondre. - Tout d'abord je dois vous remercier de votre pensée et vous dire ma satisfaction de correspondre avec vous. Pourquoi faut il que ce que vous me demandez ne soit pas dans ma habitude! J'aurais tant aimé témoigner de votre public [publication], qui m'a si souvent gâté. toute ma sympathie et ma gratitude pour l'accueil qu'il veut bien accorder à mes œvres [?], mais je ne conférencie jamais. Je vous prie d'examiner ma réponse confraternellement [...]". - Seinen Durchbruch und größten Erfolg hatte Gustave Charpentier 1900 mit der Oper Luise gefeiert, die als französische Antwort auf den italienischen Verismo gilt. Mit der als Fortsetzung gedachten Oper Julien, die 1913 in Paris uraufgeführt wurde, konnte Charpentier nicht an den früheren Erfolg anknüpfen. Danach wurde es ruhig um den Komponisten, der kaum Neukompositionen vorlegte, aber als Dirigent erfolgreich blieb. Der Brief ist nicht zuletzt vor dem Hintergrund von Gustave Charpentiers Rückzug als aktiver Komponist zu lesen.

L'eloquenza delle lacrime
ill., br. «Le lacrime sono gravi eppur lievi - scrive nella Prefazione, il cardinale Ravasi -, intrecciano tragedia e grazia; anzi, presiedono al dolore e alla gioia perché se «il gemito è l'urlo del silenzio», è altrettanto vero che est quaedam flere voluptas, che c'è piacere nel piangere, come osservava Ovidio nei suoi Tristia (IV, 3, 27). Anzi, come diceva sant'Agostino, «nessuna cosa è talmente unita alla felicità quanto il pianto». Le lacrime, insomma, sono la «calligrafia dell'anima e dell'emozione». Lo sono anche per la stessa esperienza di fede. Il Salmista in un verso di straordinaria efficacia afferma che il Pastore supremo delle nostre anime, Dio, raccoglie nell'otre - che è quasi lo scrigno del nomade - le perle delle lacrime umane, registrandole una per una: «Le mie lacrime nell'otre tuo raccogli: non sono forse scritte nel tuo libro?» (Salmo 56, 9). Per questo il maestro chassidico rabbi Mendel di Kotzk era convinto che «Dio preferisce le lacrime più delle preghiere», mentre il Bellarmino le considerava «il condimento della preghiera». Perché, come si scrive nelle pagine che si aprono davanti a noi, «la lacrima spegne il fuoco del peccato e attizza quello della grazia, è una cera che purifica l'anima incendiando il cielo». Purificato il cuore con il pentimento, «l'occhio vede bene Dio solo attraverso le lacrime» (V. Hugo). Queste e altre (molte altre) sensazioni, emozioni, riflessioni, intuizioni Charvet fa balenare nelle sue poche, dense eppur lievi pagine. La sua attenzione si fissa in particolare sull'amata "sensibilità barocca che ama dipingere i tratti di un viso che oscilla tra riso e pianto, gravità e leggerezza, esteriorità e interiorità". Soprattutto la musica lo aiuta a esprimere maggiormente la muta eloquenza del pianto. br. Il mito perenne dell'androgino è da Charvet attualizzato e ricollocato nel quadro dell'epoca barocca, soprattutto di quella musicale. La penna dell'autore è posta "al servizio di un pensiero fecondo, preciso", dal quale sprigionano a raffica "intuizioni avvincenti sulla musica dell'età barocca". È questo un libro che aiuta nella comprensione di un'epoca, quella Barocca, dalla cronologia labile, dai mille volti di Proteo, dai caratteri sfumati; epoca caratterizzata da un negativo antropologico tornato, oggi, di moda. La cui aspirazione massima, avverte Charvet, era quella di poter "vivere il doppio per meglio raggiungere l'uno", quello di "partecipare al molteplice per accedere all'unità".
