Cowell, Henry (1897-1965). Pioneering American Composer
AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED by the American composer HENRY COWELL correcting an error in the numbering of his HYMN AND FUGUING TUNE NO. 18.
New York January 4 1965. 1965. Very good. - Over 40 words penned in blue ink on 4 inch high by 6 inch wide cream paper. In his note apparently addressed to a music publisher the pioneering modern American composer Henry Cowell expresses his concerns that an error was made in numbering his "Hymn and Fuguing #18": "A mistake was made in numbering my duet for two saxophones of which you have the masters". Cowell then asks: "could you please informally scratch out 17 and put in 18 instead" and concludes with his "Hearty Greetings". Signed "Henry Cowell". Folded for mailing with the date of receipt "Jan 6 1965" stamped in red at the top and minor staining from a paper clip to the top left. Very good. <p>The work to which Cowell refers is his "Hymn and Fuguing Tume No. 18 for Soprano Saxophone and Contrabass Saxophone". The error most probably occurred because Hymn an Fuguing Tune No. 17 was deliberately left unnumbered. It was titled "Gravely and Vigorously" for solo cello and was composed in response to President Kennedy's assassination.<p>The American composer Henry Cowell 1897-1965 was strongly influenced by Oriental music as well as Irish and Midwestern folk tunes. Exploring the music of Africa Java and India he revolutionized American music with innovations such as tone clusters and directly plucking the piano's strings. New York, January 4, 1965. unknown

MAESTOSO FOR PIANO: NEW MUSIC. A Quarterly of Modern Compositions. Volume 14 Number 1. October 1940.
New York NY: The New Music Edition Corporation 1940. 1940. Very good. - Quarto 11 inches high by 8-1/2 inches wide. Softcover bound in stapled orange wraps titled and decorated in black on the front cover. The corners of the covers are lightly bumped. 7 pages. There is some offsetting to 2 of the pages apparently from some musical notations which had once been laid in. Very good. <p>First separate edition of Henry Cowell's composition "Maestoso" after publication in the "New Music" quarterly.<p>As per the biographical notes at the end of the composition: "Henry Cowell was born at Menlo Park California in the year 1897. After having composed over one hundred works without instruction he studied under Charles Seeger at the University of California under R. Huntington Woodman at the Institute of Applied Music in New York and later with a Guggenheim Fellowship under Prof. Erich Von Hornbostel at the University of Berlin. He has composed over seven hundred works for orchestra chamber combinations voice and piano solo; and has been a pioneer in the use of a number of different sorts of new musical materials although his style is eclectic and has never been exclusively 'Modernistic' or 'Classical'. He founded New Music in 1927 and is now an editor of this periodical. He has worked toward the furthering of contemporary American and other composers through writing books and articles forming publication and recording organizations and organizing concerts." COYEN.

Crabuzza Claudia
Grazia, la madre. Omaggio in musica a Grazia Deledda. Con CD Audio
ill., br.
