br. «Non mi sposerò mai! Me lo sono ripetuto per tutta la vita, sin da quando ero ragazzino. Ogni volta che si sfiorava l'argomento matrimonio, o che qualcuno nella mia cerchia di conoscenti minacciava di sposarsi, o che mi sentivo rivolgere domande del tipo "Ma non hai mai pensato di mettere la testa a posto?", il mio mantra era puntualmente lo stesso: "Non mi sposerò mai".» E a questo mantra Stefano D'Orazio si è tenuto stretto con tutte le forze, mentre attorno a lui amici e compagni cadevano vittima uno dopo l'altro del «sacro vincolo» (e gli altri Pooh si sposavano due o tre volte a testa). Ma nella vita di ogni uomo, si sa, c'è una donna destinata a fargli perdere completamente la testa e a rivoltargli la vita come un calzino. E così, dopo soli dieci anni di convivenza, in una notte sconsiderata di inizio estate ? e in diretta tv dall'Arena di Verona ? Stefano è arrivato a formulare la fatidica proposta alla sua amata Tiziana. E vissero felici e contenti? No, questo è solo l'inizio della nostra storia. Perché al giorno d'oggi mettere in piedi un matrimonio è più impegnativo che dar vita a un tour di cinquanta concerti negli stadi. I futuri sposi vengono risucchiati in un girone dantesco popolato da wedding planner e flower stylist, manager dal sangue blu e hostess svampite. Da questa esperienza Stefano è uscito più saggio, più sfinito e soprattutto più sposato: essendo sopravvissuto per raccontarcela, condivide con i fan che lo seguono da una vita e con gli sventurati che hanno in mente di sposarsi tutti i trucchi e i segreti per organizzare il «giorno più bello» senza avere una crisi di nervi e senza desiderare di uccidersi a vicenda. Un anti-manuale ironico, irriverente e sincero come il suo autore, ma in fondo anche una romantica storia d'amore: perché pure sotto la scorza del più duro dei batteristi batte un cuore.

Heinrich Isaac and Polyphony for the Proper of the Mass in the Late Middle Ages and the Renaissance

The important contribution of Heinrich Isaac (ca. 1455?1517) to polyphonic settings of the proper of the mass has long been recognised. The monumental posthumously published collection of his work in the genre, the Choralis Constantinus, was considered as a landmark even in the sixteenth century. Isaac's striking cultivation of polyphonic mass proper settings has its roots in his task, as Hofcomponist to Emperor Maximilian I, of building a musical repertoire for the Imperial court chapel. The repertoire he created awakened a demand for analogous music at other European courts and institutions and led, in 1508, to the commissioning of an extraordinary series of proper cycles from him by the authorities of Constance cathedral. The 500th anniversary, in 2009, of Isaac's delivery of these mass proper settings was the immediate stimulus for an international conference devoted to mass propers?the first of its kind, to the best of our knowledge. Earlier versions of most of the papers gathered in the present volume were first presented in that context. Although Isaac's mass propers have long been the object of various kinds of research, many aspects of the Choralis collection remain enigmatic. One major aim of the conference, and of the present book, was thus to present new research on at least some of these Isaac-related issues. It has been clear since Gerhard-Rudolf Patzig's groundbreaking dissertation of 1956 that the printed Choralis contains settings for both Constance and the court of Emperor Maximilian I. However, exactly which works within it were composed for which recipients is still the subject of debate, and, as David Rothenberg shows, open to new hypotheses. Equally perplexing is the way by which this vast amount of music, of diverse origin, was collected and sent to the printing press. As Royston Gustavson shows, the production process behind the Choralis was anything but smooth. Indeed, the fact that it was produced despite the many hurdles that stood in its way is indicative in itself of the importance (and the marketability) of Isaac's settings long after the composer's death. These texts are a treasure trove of information about Renaissance music and its context. They inform us about the lives of the composers, the publication and function of polyphonic music, and the music theory of the period. But they also read as a who's who of the courts of Europe and the higher echelons of the Church, and reveal networks between composers, printers, patrons of music and celebrated authors such as Jean Dorat, Jacques Gohory and Paulus Melissus Schede.This book offers the first critical edition of more than 150 such liminary texts, all paratexts in printed collections of motets composed by the authoritative representatives of the genre, i.e. polyphonists from the Low Countries.
